Another thing that really stands out about The Substance is that it wholeheartedly kicks realism to the curb for the sake of Artistic Vision. It snows in LA just for the sake of showing the passage of time. An exercise program airing on morning network television is basically softcore porn. A New Year's special also airing on network television has topless dancers. The instructions you receive alongside The Substance, for the medical procedures you have to perform yourself, are just flash cards that say shit like "do this every week" without ever saying what or how. Nearly every man seen is a satire where the only reason Monstroso Elisasue makes it to the stage is because the security guard didn't notice the starlet was actually a walking teratoma since she glued a cut-up poster to her face. The poster wasn't even of the correct identity.
Annie: There are legends of people born with the gift of making music so true, it can pierce the veil between life and death; conjuring spirits from the past...and the future. In ancient Ireland, they were called FilĂ. In Choctaw land, they called them Fire Keepers. And in West Africa, they were called Griots. This gift can bring healing to their communities. But it also...attracts evil....

Wunmi Mosaku as Annie.
"She is a spiritualist, conjure woman, and a healer. She is a pillar and center in the community. She owns a little shop with roots, herbs, and she also cooks. She is Smokeâs other half. She is a part of him in a way that sheâs his healer and his sanctuary, his place of vulnerability and openness. He canât hide from her. Neither can she hide from him. Sheâs a mother and sheâs someone who is deeply rooted in her traditions. Sheâs connected to the motherland, and sheâs connected to the spiritual worldâsheâs a very powerful person."- Wunmi Mosaku.

I love how "Sinners" didn't villify the sinners in the movie. Sammie's father told him that playing music for "drunkards and philanderers who abandon their family responbilities to sweat all over each other" was a sin. And he was right about the kind of people going to the juke joint: Delta Slim is an alcoholic, and Pearline a cheater. It would have been easy to villify them, but the movie tells us that despite their flaws, they are humans worthy of love, respect and freedom.
Delta Slim drinks because he's traumatized by the horrors Black people of his time face. And he's kind and compassionate, encouraging and reassuring Sammie, and sacrificing himself to save everyone else.
Pearline literally saved Sammie's life and sacrificed herself to protect him, a boy she had only known for a day. It shows her kindness because she could have easily stayed back when Remmick tried to bite Sammy and not endangered her life more than necessary.
The movie shows us that preachers blindly condemning those sinners are wrong: Sammie is only alive because drunkards, philanderers and gangsters (Smoke) gave their lives to protect him. They are people, with flaws and qualities.
I love how nuanced the movie is: Sammie's father is not wrong about the kind of people Sammie wants to associate with and their potential bad influence, but he's wrong about them being evil and not deserving of respect.

âEvery time I show the film â whether itâs to film students at USC or UCLA or Iâm going to a festival â thatâs always the first question: How did Kermit ride the bicycle? And my stock answer is: I put him on a three-wheeler until he got his balance, and then I put him on the two-wheeler.âÂ
