@bandgelo
I finished DMing my D&D campaign tonight. Usually I make most of my players cry in the final session, but tonight they flipped it and most of them made me cry!
GM/DM Tips #52: You can Make a Game out of Anything
When I'm prepping a game, particularly a one off, it can be pretty difficult to start; there's so much choice.
Recently I ran a game where we randomly rolled for everything. Stats in order, class, race, background, items, spells. As the DM I rolled the session up. I got a city famous for its Gold Mines but was facing destitution and famine. The villain was committing Highway Robbery in an attempt to get a new body to achieve immortality. I rolled for a twist and for random NPCs.
At this point it was easy to make a session, I didn't have to make choices. I only had to figure out how it all related:
The villain was stealing all the city's gold shipments to forge a new, immortal, body out of gold which was causing the town to be unable to trade for all the imports they needed.
My players said afterwards if they didn't know I had rolled for everything they would have had no idea. It felt like a completely coherent and realistic D&D game.
So if you're ever stuck at the prepping phase - taking away choice and making yourself work with certain ideas can be extremely helpful.
commission for @the-elf-barbarian of their lovely D&D character~
She looks amazing! Thanks so much <3
The barbarian queen!
"Deal with the Devil"
I'm obsessed, lately, with putting this shop in one of my D&D towns.
You walk in and a legit Pit Fiend is sitting behind a desk, wearing robes and reading glasses.
- "Good Morning, what can we help you with today?"
- "Our standard terms and conditions involve you signing your soul over to us, upon your death you will rise in the Nine Hells as a Lemure and be used in the Blood Wars as fodder. Sacrificing yourself in the defence of the Nine Hells and the rest of the multiverse."
- "This may mean oblivion for you, we are not aware of any after after life."
- "It's possible you will rise in the Nine Hells as a Lessor Devil if you achieve high levels of power in life, Lessor Devils are not used as fodder."
- "Now I won't sign you up to any deal today. We have a policy against spontaneous contracts." *Points to a sign on the wall behind him*
- "I'll also require you to seek independent legal advice before making a deal. The local temple of Bahumut can recommend lawyers to you, and even help with their fees. You won't be able to engage Mr Caldwell, however, as we are currently retaining him and no wants a conflict of interest to arise."
Elon of Clearwell, my half elf wizard. A Comission by @Tartan_Kiwi on Twitter.
My Neighbour: "You watching the game tonight?"
Me: "Yeah I'm really excited to see what happens, I don't know what to expect."
Neighbour: *starts dropping sports jargon*
Me: "Oh you weren't meaning Critical Role."
Lawful Good: A good person who believes in the value of organisation, rules, and community. Does good responsibly.
Awful Good: A narrow minded and uptight buzzkill who forces two dimensional conformity on the group.
Not the same.
Berin was able to destroy the Lich's phylactory but didn't make it. His sacrifice has purchased a new dawn for the world.
WHEN YOUR PLAYERS TELL YOU THEY HAD FUN WITH YOU DMING AND THAT THEY CAN’T WAIT TO PLAY MORE
Reblog if you are open to answering questions and giving advice for Dungeons & Dragons or other table top games.
Feel free to put in the tags how best to contact you and maybe what games or editions you know best.
Edit: since some were a little confused, I wanted to clarify that I am not looking for advice. I’m just trying to make it known to those new to the hobby that myself and many many other people are willing to help.
If you want just PM me. I play D&D 5e, 7th Sea, and anything Powered by the Apocalpse (Dungeon World, Monsterhearts, Urban Shadows, Masks, Monster of the Week, Legend of the Elements, and Apocolapse World).
