❝     magnus  had  not  been  settled  anywhere  since  his  lover  died                                       not  his  first  lover ,     but  the  first  one  who  had  lived  by  his  side  and  died  in  his  arms .     magnus  had  thought  of  her  often  enough  that  the  mention  of  her  did  not  hurt  him ,     her  remembered  face  like  the  distant  familiar  beauty  of  stars ,     not  to  be  touched  but  to  shine  in  front  of  his  eyes  at  night .     ❞        

          the  lover  in  question  had  been  known  to  most  as  amélie  de  lavallée     ( officially  delavallée ,     but  her  mother  quickly  fell  into  the  habit  of  separating  her  husband’s  surname  into  two  words  as  a  result  of  french  society’s  tendencies  to  assume  that  such  names  were  indicative  of  wealth     &&     aristocracy ;     the  descendants  of  amélie‘s  two  brothers ,     unfortunately ,     suffering  the  consequences  during  the  revolution ) .    

         the  second  and  youngest  daughter  of  a  well  -  off  family  from  grasse ,     amélie  crossed  paths  with  magnus  when  the  warlock’s  interest  was  taken  by  the  town  that  would  soon  develop  into  the  world’s  perfume  capital  in  the  1730s .     it  did  not  take  long  for  either  of  them  to  fall ,     but  although  magnus  ensured  to  court  her  properly      &&     trusted  her  well  enough  to  reveal  his  magic     (  the  first  time  he  had  done  so  with  a  lover ;     amélie  soon  becoming  fascinated  with  magnus’  poultices  and  brews     &&    even  helping  him  tend  to  the  plants  in  his  conservatory  ) ,     they  never  married                                       to  this  day ,     it  is  a  distant  regret  that  he  had  been  too  afraid  to  ask ,     too  certain  that  no  one  would  ever  think  to  take  him  as  their  husband .    

         still ,     they  had  many  experiences  together .     though  widely  -  read  and  well  -  spoken ,     amélie  had  not  been  acquainted  with  as  much  of  the  world  as  she  had  perhaps  wished ,     and  magnus  was  more  than  happy  to  fulfil  her  every  want ,     taking  her  to  lands  she  had  only  dreamed  of  until  they  were  both  ready  to  settle  down  in  a  cottage  that  he  had  purchased ;     though  adventure  never  quite  disappeared  from  their  horizons ,     as  one  might  expect  of  magnus  bane .     they  spent  the  remainder  of  amélie’s  life  together ,     until  the  1760s ,     when  she  contracted  tuberculosis .     the  illness  was  notorious  for  being  highly  undetectable  in  this  period ,     and  was  thus  not  properly  diagnosed  until  she  began  to  cough  up  blood .     by  then ,     all  magnus  could  hope  to  do  was  take  her  pain  away .

         for  the  next  thirty  years  after  her  death ,     magnus  did  not  have  the  heart  to  make  a  new  home  for  himself ,     though  he  eventually  returned  to  france  in  1790     (  in  the  aftermath  of  a  particularly  eventful  trip  to  peru  with  ragnor ,     that  is  ) ,     as  it  was  where  his  heart  had  been  left  behind .     the  cottage  in  grasse  notwithstanding ,     the  sole  reminder  he  kept  of  amélie  was  her  beloved  jewellery  box ,     handed  down  from  her  mother  when  she  had  announced  her  intentions  to  move  out .     over  time ,     it  became  the  container  in  which  he  kept  keepsakes  from  his  following  lovers .

MAGNUS BANE   &&   FREDDIE MERCURY :    A STUDY  .  by  the  time  freddie  mercury  arrived  in  his  favourite  american  city  for  a  sold - out  1978   halloween  night  concert  at  municipal  auditorium ,     a  night  at  the  opera ,     the  album  featuring  queen’s  tour  de  force  bohemian  rhapsody ,     had already catapulted  the  band  into  having  crossed  the  threshold  that  separated  popularity  from  international  superstardom .     moments  before  the  show  began ,     a  huge  gondola  tilted  forward  to  act  as  a  curtain  and  freddie  mercury ,     making  sweeping  arm  motions ,     emerged  from  the  smoke     &&     blue / green  lights  only  to  bolt  onto  the  stage     “  like  a  rooster ,     striking  ballet  poses ,     under  an  astral  guitar  blare  that  neatly  skirts  the  edges  of  rock     &&     roll ,  ”     circus  magazine’s  mark  mehler  wrote  that  night .     what  came  after ,     however ,     as  the  audience  flocked  from  the  municipal  auditorium  and  into  the  halloween  night  in  new  orleans ,     would  soon  prove  to  be  known  as  the  unforgettable  portion  of  the  evening .

                    it  was  around  three  am  that  freddie  decided  to  take  a  temporary  leave  from  the  party     &&     stroll  down  bourbon  street ,     and  it  was  on  his  way  out  of  the  venue  that  he  met  a  man  with  golden  eyes .     the  two  were  quick  to  hit  things  off  after  an  initial ,     ice - breaking  comment  from  freddie  involving  the  matter  of  magnus  bane’s  particularly  enticing  lips     (  as  well  as  the  question  of  what ,     exactly ,     he  could  do  with  them  ) ,     and  the  warlock  was  all  too  happy  to  follow  freddie  back  to  london  in  a  bid  to  get  to  know  him  better .     the  two  lived  together  for  around  two  years ,     strikingly  similar  in  their  affinities  for  both  cats  and  lavish  parties ,     as  well  as  their  similarly  unrelenting  drive  in  all  matters ,     though  magnus  mostly  kept  himself  away  from  the  public  eye  in  a  bid  to  protect  the  secret  of  his  immortality ,      as  well  as  for  the  sake  of  freddie’s  comfort .     ultimately ,     magnus  made  the  decision  that  he  could  not  allow  himself  to  tolerate  freddie’s  wandering  eye ,     but  the  pair  parted  amicably ,     and  remained  close  friends  even  after  freddie  fell  in  love  with  jim  hutton .     magnus  attended  many  of  freddie’s  other  infamous  soirees     (  by  invitation ,     this  time  )     including  his  birthday  parties  in  munich / 1985  and  ibiza / 1987 ,     as  well  as  queen’s  performance  at  the  live  aid  concert ,     and  was  left  devastated  after  his  death  in  1991 .

thoughts re: music — ❉

ALTHOUGH EVERYONE && THEIR CATS      are  well  aware  of  the  fact  that  magnus  is  horrendous  at  playing  string  instruments     (  namely ,     the  charango  ) ,     he  has  excellent  rhythm ,     and  it’s  clear  by  the  way  he  dances  /  sings  out  a  tune .     this  is  likely  why  he’s  surprisingly  adept  at  mastering  instruments  in  the  percussion  family :     he’s  picked  up  instruments  such  as  drums ,     bongos ,     and  the  güiro  at  different  points  in  time .     

                    just  because  he  isn’t  fantastic  at  most  instruments ,     however ,     doesn’t  necessarily  mean  that  he  doesn’t  have  excellent  music  taste     &&     can  spot  talent  from  a  mile  away :     he  had  a  crush  on  freddie  mercury  for  years ,     attended  his  birthday  party  in  munich ,     1985 ,     and  eventually  had  a  whirlwind  affair  with  him     (  he  still  keeps  one  of  his  guitar  picks  in  his  box  ) .     david  bowie  was  definitely  a  friend ,     and  he  was  well  acquainted  with  figures  like  mozart     &&     debussy .     

                    i  don’t  really  know  where  i’m  going  with  this ,     but  it’s  important  to  me  that  you  all  know  that  magnus  bane  is  an  absolute  nerd  about  music ,     even  if  his  attempts  at  playing  the  charango  supposedly  caused  a  llama  stampede .

            FOR TODAY’S MAGNUS BANE - RELATED HISTORY LESSON,   allow  me  to  remind  you  all  why  he  can’t  be  much  older  than  400                                        yes  ,     even  in  the  show  !     we  can  perhaps  start  with  the  fact  that  his  clave  file     (  click  here  for  a  reminder  !  )     explicitly  states  that  he  was  born  in  batavia  ,     dutch  east  indies  .     some  important  things  to  note  about  batavia  is  that  :     1  )     it  was  established  in  1619  ,     after  the  dutch  destroyed  the  formerly  -  known  area  of  jayakarta  ,     and     2  )     was  eventually  named  as  such  in  1621     (  i’m  sure  i  don’t need  to  source  this  ,     but  def  shoot  me  a  message  if  you’d  like  me  to  back  that  up  !  )  .    

                    at  this  point ,     it  still  seems  possible  that  the  clave  could  have  just  received  incorrect  information     &&     that  he  had  been  born  earlier  anyway  ,     but  dutch  traders  were  simply  not  as  present  throughout  the  archipelago  in  the  years  before  this  !     the  first  dutch  east  india  company  outpost  was  only  established  in  1603 ,     in  banten     (  check  the  second  paragraph  of  the  historical  notes  here  !  ) .     if  the  clave  was  not  sure  of  even  an  approximate  date  of  birth  ,     there’s  absolutely  no  reason  to  think  that  they  wouldn’t  have  listed  the  location  as  jakarta     (  which  is  the  modern  equivalent  )  ,     or  even  jayakarta  ,     if  he  had  been  born  earlier  than  the  establishment  of  batavia  .     

                    the  second  thing  to  note  is  that  magnus’  mother  is  also  half  -  dutch  ,     which  is  where  magnus  got  the  entirety  of  his  genetic  makeup  from     (  even  greater  demons  don’t  have  human  ethnicities                                        the  only  things  that  asmodeus  handed  down  to  him  were  his  magic     &&     warlock  mark  )  ,     so  she  could  have  only  been  born  after  1603  ,     after  the  dutch  began  to  properly  settle  .     thus ,     it  could  potentially  be  assumed  that  magnus  was  born  from  1621  -  1650  ,     as  his  clave  file  from  the  tenth  anniversary  edition  of  the  books  has  his  birth  dated  estimated  at  the  early  1600s     (  click  here  for  a  reminder  ,     as  well  as  some  truly  iconic  aliases  of  magnus’  !  )  .     seeing  as  the  show  is  still  stuck  in  2016  ,     and  the  earliest  he  could  have  presumably  been  born  is  1621  ,     that  would  put  his  oldest  possible  age  at  395  .     thanks  for  coming  to  my  ted  talk  .   xoxo

            TINY HEADCANON :       the  glasses  that  magnus  wore  during  his  commercial  in  the  world  inverted  universe  have  had  a  spell  placed  upon  them  to  hide  his  warlock  mark     (  likely  by  catarina ,     who  still  regularly  uses  magic  in  order  to  assist  hospital  patients  ) .     before  having  jumpstarted  his  powers  once  more ,     he  was  able  to  glamour  his  eyes  without  the  spectacles  thanks  to  what  may  be  labelled  muscle  memory ,     likely  due  to  having  known  the  spell  for  hundreds  of  years ,     but  only  for  short  periods  of  time .

           TENNYSON HAD ONCE CLAIMED           that     " in  the  spring ,     a  man's  fancy  lightly  turns  to  thoughts  of  love , “     and  the  blooming  season  of     1932     had  been  no  different  for  Magnus .     Spring  had  washed  in  like  the  tide ,     advancing  confidently ,     with  warmth     &&     white  sunshine  one  day  and  retreating  the  next     (  much  like  the  way  in  which  he'd  pursued  Kalan ;     a  devastatingly  gorgeous  member  of  the  Fair  Folk  ) .     

                    Some  days ,     the  adolescent  pansies     &&     daffodils  found  themselves  awash  with  tepid  air  that  encouraged  them  to  sprout ;     on  others ,     the  wintry  gusts  of  wind  were  fierce                                   demanding  a  return  to  the  biting  bitterness  of  the  months  before .     But  like  the  tide ,     and  the  spring ,     Magnus  would  not  be  stopped ,     and  their  romantic  dalliances  had  continued  on  into  May ,     banishing  the  lonely  chill  of  winter  to  memory ,     even  if  only  temporarily .     Kalan  had  loved  him  deeply ,     unrelentingly …     fleetingly ,     as  it  so  happened .     By  the  time  summer  had  come  to  a  close ,     inviting  the  first  falling  leaves  of  Autumn ,      Magnus  had  found  himself  ALONE  once  more .

THEODORE BANKS: SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT FOR 09.04.18. 

            AT AN (UN)IMPRESSIVE STATURE OF        5′6     &&     a  particularly  off-putting  penchant  for  launching  into  stories  of  his  youth     (  stories  which ,     Magnus  imagines ,    likely  only  contain  half  of  the  truth  at  best  ) ,     Theodore  Banks  has  been  a  client  of  his  for  almost  a  decade .     

                    A  lawyer  by  trade     &&     a  so - called     ‘ playboy ’     by  profession ,     Theodore  has  quarterly  visits  to  Magnus’  home  scheduled  in  order  to  receive  a  liquid  solution  which  enhances  his ,     erm …     sexual  prowess .     One  spoonful  of  the  brew  mixed  in  with  his  coffee  each  morning  for  a  week ,     and  improvement  is  GUARANTEED  for  the  duration  of  the  next  three  months !!     Unfortunately ,     Magnus  has  no  obligation  to  help  him  actually     ATTRACT     anyone .

re:  magnus’ mother.

DISCLAIMER :    my thoughts     &&     headcanons based on research are listed below .     i’m not expecting anyone to take this as canon ,     since it’s not :     it’s just my idea for     MY     magnus     &&     his mother in particular !! 

yep yep ,     y’all knew this was coming !!     i’d really like to thank ani     ( legacydamned )     in particular for all of her help     &&     advice ,     as well as everyone else who listened to me whinge and whine as i worked my way through figuring this out !!     now ,    without further ado ,     i’ve made the decision that magnus’ mother     ( or ,     at least ,     my imagining of her )     will be named ….     magdalena !!

BEFORE     anyone tries telling me that i’ve taken the easy way out     ( i know ,     i know :     magnus / magdalena … ) ,     i want to make the disclaimer that i put a     LOT     of research into this .     i talked to friends who are phds in history     &&     have masters in colonisation ,     read through a bunch of really neat scholarly articles ,     and made sure to get advice from my friends as to whether or not it was too tacky     ( and maybe they were being nice ,     and maybe i’ve simply put entirely too much effort into this endeavour ,     but i really ,     truly love this character ,     and i want to do right by him ) .

the whole thing started off a little trickily :     as some of you may know ,     magnus’ mother is half indonesian     &&     half dutch     ( which is where magnus gets the entirety of his ethnicity from ) ,      so i went through the process of figuring out if she’d maybe have a catholic name ….     especially since magnus was raised catholic ,     which means that     SHE     was definitely catholic ,     too     —     and ,      based on ani’s advice and the fact that magnus’ stepfather seemed very wealthy based on what we saw of his property in magnus’ flashback in 2x15 ,     she likely grew up in a family that had assimilated into the dutch settlements to some extent     ( and were probably wealthy in their own right ) …     which raised the possibility of her having had a christian name     —     possibly even a saint ,     since converts to catholicism had a history of emphasising it .

after taking in all of this information ,     i wanted to let it rest for a while …     but i kept thinking of the name     ‘ magdalena . ’     at first ,     it definitely seemed a little tacky to me ,     but then it hit me :     magnus isn’t his real name .     canonically ,     there are a bunch of unrevealed reasons as to why the name     ‘ magnus ’     just     “ felt right ”     when he chose it     (  magnus  bane  means     ‘ great  destruction , ’     which  could  possibly  have  been  another  motivating  factor  ) ,     so why couldn’t this be one of the reasons why ??     clearly ,     he chose his new name when he was young ,     possibly even when he was staying with the silent brothers in madrid :     as the magnus effect was only named as such in 1852/3     ( therefore ,     a blatant lie as to his reasonings ) ,     is it not possible that he wished to channel his mother ,     the person he’d been closest to all his life ,     in one last way ??

there is ,     of course ,     always the argument that he doesn’t want to remember his childhood .    the only parts that truly haunted him ,     however ,     were the events leading up to the deaths of his mother     &&     step-father .     to be completely honest ,     i’m sure he had a good relationship with both of them ,     if not just his mother ,     before that     ( though ,     clearly he’s not planning to go around naming anything after his step-father ) .     there’s also the fact that in     ‘ the runaway queen , ’     magnus names a monkey after ragnor     —     it’s clearly something he hasn’t put a lot of thought into ,     and it’s wholly possible that i’m overreaching and he’s just a rude buttface when it comes to ragnor ,     but i think it may very well have offered something of an insight to his deeper character .     besides ,     we all do this :     we all name things after those who are dearest to us ,     if only to have a part of them be close to us always .

it’s not exactly a saint’s name ,     which is what i was initally aiming for ,     but it’s a derivative of magdalene ,     as in mary magdalene ,     which was popular among the dutch in the 17th century …     and i think it fits .     xx

SAVVIES.     magnus is particularly knowledgable in regards to demonic realms , texts , and spells . though he has not had much experience with driving , he can pilot a hot air balloon (with some magical influence), drive a motorbike, and ride horses . he’s also rather good at mixing cocktails .

HAIR.    short ,  black hair , with plenty of volume . on occasion , he adds streaks to his hair , which often match the colour scheme of his outfit .   SCARS / BIRTHMARKS.     while magnus was born with brown eyes , they eventually developed into yellow-green cat eyes as a sign of his species .  as for scars , he has one thin mark on his chest (near his heart)  &  one matching (albeit slightly larger) scar on his back . both are vertical , pale , and raised . ABILITIES / POWERS.     regardless of what he lacks in regards to musical instruments , magnus more than compensates for it by way of his skills . he’s highly proficient when it comes to brewing potions , in both liquid  &  powder forms , and is particularly adept at performing magic , due to his parentage . on top of this , he is quick thinking  & resourceful regardless of whether he is on a battlefield or in conversation , and is particularly adept at reading people’s emotions despite suppressing many of his own . being a warlock , magnus has the ability to see through most shadow world glamours , and as the son of a greater demon , he is capable of wielding seraph blades . witchlight will also light up beneath his touch , though both items will flare red rather than white . thoughts re:  cats —  ❉

while  he  loves  chairman  meow     &     the  foster  cats  who  visit  his  home  to  no  foreseeable  end     (  and  even  canonically  owned  a  fluffy  grey  cat  named     ‘ the  great  catsby ’     as  late  as  1993  ) ,     magnus  bane  was  admittedly  not  awfully  fond  of  cats  in  his  formative  years .     they  weren't  exactly  common  household  pets  during  his  childhood  in  batavia     (  nor  have  they  become  awfully  common  in  indonesia  today ,     particularly  in  comparison  to  the  sheer  amount  of  pet  owners  in  western  countries  ) ,     and  medieval  europe  had  produced  that  horrid  superstition  about  witches  owning  cats  only  centuries  earlier ,     the  feline  having  been  believed  to  be  some  sort  of  demon  or  evil  spirit  in  disguise ,     which  arguably  encouraged  his  natural  aversions  towards  the  creatures .     he ,     after  all ,     could  not  yet  tolerate  what  he  was     —     why  make  any  movement  to  embrace  his  identity ,     or  perpetuate  the  stereotype ??     and ,     of  course ,     there  was  the  matter  of  the  awful  comparison  to  be  made  between  his  real  eyes  and  those  of  cats :     a  fact  that  he  wasn’t  particularly  interested  in  being  reminded  of  any  more  often  than  necessary .

over  the  years ,     magnus  kept  a  number  of  interesting  animals  as  companions     —     a  monkey  named  ragnor ,     a  hedgehog  named  pin  cushion ,     and  a  few  exotic  birds     (  ragnor  taught   one  particularly  talkative  african  grey  parrot  to  respond  to  the  name     ‘ magnus , ’     as  payback  for  the  monkey  incident  ) ,     to  name  a  few     —     but  a  great  deal  of  distance  was  kept  between  himself  and  most  felines  …     until  he  happened  upon  shakespurr .     

shakespurr  was  an  undersized  alley - cat ;     and  the  term  here  is  meant  quite  literally ,     as  he  had  been  abandoned  in  a  dumpster  behind  the  plaza  hotel ,     magnus’  building  of  residence  at  the  time     (  around  1930  ) .     the  rather  pitiful  sounds  it  made  had  caught  magnus’  attention  on  his  way  into  the  building ,     and     —     well ,     while  he  wasn’t  a  fan  of  the  species ,     he  couldn’t  leave  the  thing  to  die .     the  creature  was  taken  into  his  home  and  nursed  back  to  health ,     and  in  his  belated  realisation  that  he  would  have  nowhere  to  take  it  to  once  all  traces  of  sickliness  had  been  vanquished ,     he  also  reached  the  epiphany  that  the  cat  had  begun  to  grow  on  him .     they  were ,     admittedly ,     rather  similar ,     after  all :     the  languid  gait ,     the  brazen  attitude …     and  even  the  eyes ,     which  he  had  learned  to  embrace  on  himself ,     even  if  he  was  not  quite  willing  to  continually  put  them  on  display  just  yet .     when  the  runt  had  fallen  asleep  upon  an  antique  copy  of  a  particular  anthology  of  plays     &     the  warlock  had ,     without  thinking ,     teased  the  sleeping  animal  with  the  name     ‘ shakespurr ’     as  he’d  walked  by ,     he’d  known  that  he  would  not  have  the  heart  to  let  his  new  companion go .

besides ,     his  reputation  as  a  seasoned  potion - maker  and  a  powerful  warlock     WOULD     get  all  the  more  interesting  with  a  cat  by  his  side .

his  fondest  memory  of  his  mother  involves  the  fact  that ,     before  his  warlock  mark  appeared ,     she  used  to  have  the  lovely  habit  of  singing .     read  magnus’  ic  thoughts  about  that  here  for  100%  more  pain ,     guaranteed !!

since  warlocks  are  not  quite  as  physically  gifted / fast  as  werewolves  or  vampires ,     magnus  regularly  undertakes  combat  training as  well  as  meditation     (  similar  to  what  was  shown  in  2x01  ) ,     as  his  reflexes  are  something  he  is  required  to  actively work  on .     thus ,     he  can  most  definitely  hold  his  own  when  it  comes  to  hand  to  hand  combat .

magnus’  apothecary  is  a  place  he  retreats  to  when  he  needs  to  keep  his  hands  occupied .     he  utilises  a  lot  of  home - grown  ingredients  in  his  brews     (  particularly  flora  )     —     there’s  aconite  growing  beneath  a  lamp  at  his  work  bench ,     a  conservatory  brimming  with  the  greens  of  acanthus     &     mandrake  in  a  pocket  dimension  past  a  doorway ,     a  tiny  nursery  on  the rooftop ,     warded  against  the  curious  mouths  of  cats .     brewing  is  somewhat  therapeutic  for  him ,     a  skill  he’s  been  honing  for  hundreds  of  years ,     and  it’s  something  of  a  joy ,     especially  since  he  knows  that  this  kind  of  work  is  what  helps  his  fellow  downworlders .     while  he  claims  to  charge  copious  amounts  of  money  for  all  of  his  services ,     he’ll  never  ask  a  downworlder  for  payment  when  it  comes  to  medicinal  brews  if  their  injury  was  inflicted  upon  them  by  the  hands  of  a  shadowhunter .  

in  truth ,     magnus  has  a  rather  short  temper ,     but  can  be  extremely  adept  at  disguising  his  feelings  and  brushing  a  stray  comment  or  two  off …     depending ,     of  course ,     on  the  situation     &     offender .     

his     ‘ m ’     &     ‘ b ’     rings  were  novelty  gifts  from  ragnor ,     but  he  wears  them every  day  nevertheless .     his  name     &     title  are  precious  things  to  magnus ,     and  the  jewellery  serves  as  a  reminder  of  who  he  is ,     and  how  far  he  has  come .

he  allocates  at  least  one  hour  per  day  to  study:     something  which  usually  entails  translating  texts  in  archaic / demonic  languages ,     concocting  potions ,     learning  new  spells ,     or  perfecting  old  ones .     if  he’s  had  a  particularly  bad  day ,     he’ll  spend  the  evening  by  the  window  with  a  glass  of  wine  in  hand     &     will  simply  study     (  or  read  ) .

he  suffers  from  both  ptsd     &     bpd .     there  are  good  days ,     and  bad  days     —     during  the  bad  days ,     it  is  not  uncommon  for  him  to  turn  to  alcohol  and / or  make  an  effort  to  distract  himself  completely  by  helping  others  as  a  makeshift  coping  mechanism .

magnus  speaks  many ,     many  languages  as  a  direct  result  of  his  travels ,     but  one  of  the  most  interesting  is  pirahã ,     or  múra - pirahã     —     it  is  the  indigenous  language  of  the  isolated  pirahã  of  amazonas ,     and  the  only  surviving  dialect  of  the  mura  language .     as  of  2009 ,     there  are  approximately  only 250  native  speakers ,     magnus  having  picked  up  the  language  during  an  early  exploration  of  brazil     &     the  amazon     (  and  even  then ,     he  is  hardly  fluent ,     as  pirahã  is  an  extremely  difficult  language  to  learn  ) .

about magnus’ bpd.

as we all know,  he possesses deep trauma as a result of ordeals from his childhood  &  adult life.  his fear of abandonment  &  belief that he is inherently unlovable stems from his mother’s suicide—-  she killed herself because she couldn’t bear to be with him,  and it impacted him greatly.  lines from the show like  “i’m a lot to get used to”  ( 2x01 )  &  “you don’t regret it,  do you?”  ( 1x12 )  reinforce this idea,  as the fear of being unbearable is common among people who have bpd. 

camille used to be his fp.  she stopped him from committing suicide and was there for him when no one else was,  so he got very attached to her  &  idealised her for a long time.  making the decision to let her go was one of the hardest things he’d ever done. 

binge drinking  &  spending is a huge part of it.  he 100% impulse shops and / or changes his style completely when he’s feeling particularly terrible,  as his sense of self can get fairly shaky from time to time. 

the mood drops that stem from tired nights during which he’s made a mistake while brewing a potion  ( or anything similar )  can get so terrible that he’ll have to consciously stop himself from crying. 

while he’s had centuries to try  &  get past his need for validation,  and to build his self - confidence and identity,  it isn’t always an upward climb,  and he does appreciate verbal validation from time to time,  since he doesn’t have emotional permanence.

small hc drop about magnus’ ptsd.

for starters,  it stems from his traumatising past:  his mother killed herself after realising he was a warlock,  his stepfather tried to kill him,  and i think it may have been implied that camille was mentally abusive.  as we see in the show,  he’d gone to considerable lengths to suppress most of his triggering memories.

it took centuries for him to achieve this,  however,  and he struggled with it from time to time even before the body swap  &  agony rune brought it all back.

as a result of the events of 2x12,  he relives past events through unwanted and recurring memories,  often in the form of vivid images and nightmares.  

helping others is a major coping mechanism for him. 

he’s able to somewhat bond with jace over it,  even though he remains reluctant to actually divulge the origins of his own ptsd.

aside from the obvious,  fashionable reasons to wear jewellery,  his rings  &  bracelets in particular are useful grounding objects.  they serve as reminders that he is in the present,  rather than the past.

occasionally,  he experiences hyperacusis—-  an increased sensitivity to certain frequency and volume ranges of sound / a collapsed tolerance to usual environmental sound.  sometimes,  it’s brought on by a trigger,  but it can also cultivate from a lack of sleep,  or from magnus having overworked himself.  over time,  those who are close to him have learned how to calm him down using a grounding technique:  slowly,  they ask him to list five things he sees,  four physical things he feels,  three things he hears,  two things he smells,  and one thing he tastes.
