my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government

i hate that crying is seen as manipulative. i am a very emotional person. i cry easily. if we were to get into an argument there is a very good chance i'd cry. and it's very distressing knowing that i could be branded a manipulator because of something i can't control. many years ago i was about three months into a new job and a coworker told me "you know, jake, when you first started here i thought you were one of those 'fake nice' people, but now i see that you're actually genuinely really nice!" and i truly believe she meant it as a compliment, but all i could think was "why did you think i was faking?" i still think about that to this day, almost a decade later. i still worry that i come off as insincere or disingenuous. you cannot always control how people think of you, there will always be those who dislike you or refuse to understand you and you just kind of have to eat that. but i would hope, generally, that people assume the best in me and believe that i am kind. i am not someone who enjoys deliberately hurting or upsetting people. and i think the world would be a better place if we all gave each other the benefit of the doubt more often.

as someone who only started getting into dan & phil after the hard launch (i was an avid tumblr user in the early 2010s and miraculously managed to avoid like all of their content lol) i still can't bring myself to watch any of their stuff from before they came out, just knowing that dan was miserable and suicidal the whole time. it's like now that they're being open about it i can't look at any of their old videos without being hyper-aware that i'm looking at an unhappy, inauthentic version of this person and that's so viscerally upsetting and triggering to me as someone who was myself forced back into the closet by my own family for many years. there's like this running bit where fans will go back to their old vids and comment "tee hee they were boyfriends here" except for me it's "this guy wanted to kill himself here," like i truly can't stop thinking about it and it just makes me want to fucking sob, man. not just for dan specifically but, like, all of us. progress for gay and trans people in general has slid backwards so much over the past decade and i really think being LGBTQ+ is scarier right now than it's ever been in my lifetime. a lot of us have survived suicidal ideation but a lot of us didn't, and won't. obviously i cannot put words in a stranger's mouth but if dan is finally comfortable and confident enough now to move forward and close the book on that chapter of his life then i kinda feel like i shouldn't be looking at it either, out of respect
obviously it's all in good fun and i'm not actually bothered lol but i'm seeing a lot of parasect hate and "good ending" split evos for paras lately where it gets rid of the mushroom somehow and i'm like damn how do you guys not think parasect as a concept is cool as hell. parasites are part of the natural world and nature is often terrible and brutal and unfair and that's what makes it so beautiful and fascinating. there are real-life parasites doing crazier shit to their hosts than what the mushroom is doing to paras. i love paras! it's very cute! but what happens to it is just the cycle of life, baby. the mushroom isn't "evil" it's carrying out what it needs to do to survive. and i think that element of realism is so much cooler than a "feel-good" paras evo where it gets to "win." it's kinda like watching a documentary where a wolf kills a deer or something—it's sad for the deer, yes, but you know logically it's what has to happen for the ecosystem and the wolf isn't "bad" for needing to eat to live

one of the understandable but still frustrating things about my job is that because we work with domestic violence cases we have to be EXTREMELY vague on the phone when making initial contact with people, because an abusive partner could be screening their calls or even standing right next to them so we can't say where we're calling from, we can't even use the word "firm" we have to say "office," things like that but the result of this is that when we leave messages they do 100% sound like spam/solicitation calls and i understand why a good chunk of people never call us back
i really appreciate pokopia being so unambiguous about the positive relationship between humans and pokemon from the pokemons' perspective. you can't walk ten feet in the mainline games without tripping over an npc who says something like "humans and pokemon exist together in harmony!" but an entire GAME about how the pokemon feel about it is incredibly vindicating. pokemon yearn for the presence and companionship of humans. in its absence they find comfort in human customs and manmade objects, and, failing that, will disappear altogether. humans and pokemon can ONLY exist as two halves of a whole. obviously everyone's welcome to their own interpretations but this is exactly why those "pokemon are just slaves and/or animals" takes have always rubbed me the wrong way
