Final vlog update before hand in! Unfortunately, I wasn’t as organised as I thought I’d be and I’m posting this five days late, but here we are.
Hunt/Gather
For my major film project this year, I decided to do a complete sound redesign for a short film that a friend of mine made last year.
As I couldn’t get the same actors to complete a new ADR recording, I endeavoured to clean up the original dialogue track. This turned out to be far more difficult than originally planned. As everything was recorded on location, there was a lot of background noise in the dialogue track which had to be dealt with. After far too many hours using RX and almost losing my mind, I got it to a clean, usable state with almost no background noise.
For the rest of the recording process, it was a breeze. I got in early to the studios and recorded the movement and footstep sounds as they were the most tedious but provided the most towards the film. After that, it was a lot of playing around, recording different things and editing them to create the sounds necessary for the specifics of the film.
Here is the original:
The Grower
So as well as my major short film that I’ve done the sound design for, I’ve produced the music for a short wee animation made by another student. This, the film, and a small sound library will be handed in on Friday as part of my major portfolio assignment.
As part of producing the sound for the animation, I went through a couple of different ways to write the music for it. One of them was the standard, sit down and play some chords - which didn’t really work out as I am not a musician or composer. Another way was trying out 12 tone music; which worked well in theory. Once put into practice, it really did not fit the film well at all.
So last week, Thomas, dear, sweet Thomas, sat down with me and asked exactly what I wanted. I hummed and used very large hand gestures as to what I wanted the music to sound like and he performed it like a champion. Now, we have a finished product to hand in that sounds just like I wanted it to.
Maybe one day I’ll learn an instrument so I don’t have make lots of hand movements and hum in order to get the desired outcome.
I have my dear friend T-Dog at my place to create the music for my film this evening. It’s very strange to be giving someone else creative control over a project I’ve spent the past six months working on, but it’s coming together nicely and I couldn’t have asked a better person to be doing it.
Non-video update!
A brief update on what’s been happening, since it’s been about a month since I’ve kept this updated in any way.
After finishing recording, the whole project had to be put on hold as assignments at SAE were coming to a close and needed to be finished (they worked out well, I passed all of them).
However, now that we’re back in Invercargill and have access to the studios at all hours - praise SIT - I have three weeks to finish off editing and mixing before it’s handed in.
I’ll have another vlog up in the next week or so, but otherwise, Laterz!
Finally finished recording for the major project! Admittedly, music still has to be dealt with, but the foley, ambience, and specifics are all done.
Finished up recording movement sounds this week. Still gotta clean up the dialogue a bit more and record specifics.
New video for the week! Finished my footsteps and cleaned up my dialogue, it’s been a productive week
Finished up all the footsteps yesterday! Big shoutout to 'Mr. Footsteps' who generously donated all of his pairs of shoes to the cause - thanks man, I couldn’t have done it without you.
VLOG 2: Another Update!
I look mildly like a Lord of the Rings elf and painfully awkward as always, but here’s an update on the major project.
When The Boiz™ offer to help set up for nice long foley recording session #recording #studio #foley (at SAE Institute Byron Bay)
Redoing my spotting session as I lost the ones I’d done before. Ran out of sheets at the five minute mark so I’ll have to wait til Monday before I can print some more.
Had a fantastic time volunteering at Splendour in the Grass last weekend, as you can see, Jimmy and I enjoyed drawing new tattoo ideas on one another with chalk for the cars.
First & last video before I head to Splendour for the rest of the week.
Who needs a tripod when you have miscellaneous stackable objects.
Finally recorded night ambience!!
A big shoutout to Lee for letting me use his Zoom for the evening as I would’ve been lost without it. Thankfully I didn’t have to stay out too late as the weather wasn’t overly fantastic, and it’s the first night we’ve had where birds didn’t scream all night.
