The Immaculate Consumptive was a project consisting of Lydia Lunch, Nick Cave, Marc Almond and JG Thirlwell. In October 1983, The Immaculate Consumptive played two shows at Danceteria in NYC and one at the 9.30 club in Washington DC. Chris Bohn and Anton Corbijn came along to write about and photograph the project for NME. 42 years ago today.

“die Insel!” sagt Blixa. “Die INSEL!!!”

This film has captured me. The image of the tidal island (the ever-retreating tidal island which can never be reached) haunts me. In the film it is a shimmering mirage, a goal that several of the companions die or are abandoned, failing to reach.

The film notes describe the location as “West Berlin, Nordstrand and Heiligensee”.

Nordstrand is a reclaimed Frisian Island (now a peninsula) in Schleswig-Holstein in the very Northern tip of what was then West Germany. And it turns out that there is a tiny tidal island in the marshes beyond it, reachable by foot at low tide.

Hallig Südfall is its name… it is surrounded by marshes, like those that beguiled and waylaid the companions.

As one grows closer, one can see the distinctive toothed appearance that is visible in the film.

Although they appear to be steep cliffs or mountains in the film, the perspective is distorting. They are only houses.

The island that the one-armed Visionär urges them to reach is real, but in the film it is an illusion.
