@barbmagazine
Disneyland, 1972.
I have been blogging here at BARB for one year, today. Officially. In the year that I have been blogging, I have broken up with dating apps, struggled to find employment/confronted rampant ageism, fallen in love with brilliant women who have become my closest friends, reconnected with people I’ve always liked, seen and enjoyed the movie Thor and continue to find new realms of depth with my daughter. It’s been a tumultuous year for me personally, and it’s been a year of becoming woke politically. I’ve experimented with BARB and I’m honored to have had writers bring their ideas to it: Corinna Barsan’s author series, BARB Turning Pages, Leslie Columbale’s film series, Cinema Siren and Stacey Conde’s beauty series, Lady Parts. (If you’d like to write, email me!) We’ve had vibrator reviews and cosmetic reviews and interviews with women I admire as well as my Transitions series. Thank you for coming back day after day. I hope you continue to do so. So in honor of my BARBAVERSARY, I’m re-posting that initial post. Have a great weekend. Check it out on barbmagazine.com link in bio #barbaversary #barbmagazine #ladieslikeus #feminism #parenting
With Some Selfies, the Uglier the Better - NY Times
“One of the things ugly selfies do for girls is strip the conventional approaches to ‘prettiness.’ It’s a reminder that your face has other avenues of expression. That it doesn’t necessarily have to be rooted in attractiveness.”
My latest – on girls, ugly selfies, and rejecting conventional beauty standards. Featuring the always-trend-setting Ruby Karp.
For all of my parenting life, I have been bringing my daughter to a place called the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theatre, in Chelsea, the third-ish location of the then NY-based UCB (Solo Arts could be considered first, the second, the one I went to religiously in the 90s, was on 22nd street). The Chelsea space itself opened in April 2003, and today, November 30, 2017, its lease on the space below the Gristedes supermarket is up. The west side arm of the UCB will now live on West 42nd Street (the other NY location, UCB East, on Avenue A, is where I produce a monthly stand up show, We Hope You Have Fun, hosted by Ruby Karp). The UCB—founded by Matt Walsh, Amy Poehler, Matt Besser, and Ian Roberts in the 90’s—is a community. It consists of performers and behind-the-scenes crew and its ever-evolving audience, comedy nerds and tourists alike. Fans of escaping, of feeling happy, of forgetting and being in the moment. Of people who will sit and stand in the dark, watching their friends and heroes on stage. Of comedy and its nuances. I’d been an audience member since the 90s, when I’d seen Walsh, Poehler, Besser and Roberts at some bar, some other place where the stairs were so very steep. My father fed me my love of comedy in the 70s, and that included improv; finding an improv theatre in the 90s in NY? The best. And while a move is a move is a move, this Chelsea location is embedded in my heart; it’s where I came with my daughter, month after month, year after year, for the past 14 years. My daughter, so young, always in tow, tiny muppet hand in mine. In those early years, when she was 3, then, 4, then 5, she relished in the atmosphere, the laughter, always the laughter. I didn’t know, in retrospect, the impact it would have, that she would be infused with the same fandom as I had; I simply didn’t have the means for a babysitter. Some parents are calculated in what they want their children to have at their fingertips—piano lessons, soccer practice, like that; I had no roadmap. I was winging it. Going to UCB on a wintery night on. 💜💚💜 For the rest go to barbmagazine.com link in profile #barbmagazine #ladieslikeus #byechelsea #parenting #feminism #improv
Okay here we go 2018. Show me your Feminism. Celebrate your women. Support your girls. Honor your herstory. Let’s do this ladies. Let’s fucking kick ass. #feminism #ladieslikeus #celebrate #supportwomen #barbmagazine
In a few months, my daughter will have graduated high school. I have a sense of where she’s going to; it’s far enough that my home will be in fact so very empty. I know how much I will miss her; that’s just obvious. In raising her on my own, so much has been on my shoulders—supporting us financially, emotionally, physically. Sometimes it’s been overwhelming (if any of you have tackled spending time with a three year-old, you know what I mean). The beauty of time is that the hard bits fade into the background. I can joke now at how many times my elementary school aged child was late to school, because I couldn’t get out of bed, but at the time, getting out of bed was the challenge of my funk-ridden days. Now, with just months left with her as a student in my home, I cling to the little rituals I implemented for myself over the years, which includes preparing her school lunch. The Teenager goes to a public school, where lunch is indeed provided. Every so often, when I mention my diligent effort, a person will wonder why a Teenager isn’t making her own lunch? The answer is in the aforementioned. This little thing that I do—getting out of bed at 7am to fill a brown paper bag with a yogurt, a sandwich, a fruit, a beverage, a sweet—is something I love to do. When I have a fever, when it’s cold outside, when I am suffering, I will make that lunch. And I will continue to do so until June 26, 2018, when she graduates high school.
So there’s all that plus my foray into menopause and all the things; go to barbmagazine.com or click the link in the profile! Have an awesome Tuesday #barbmagazine #ladieslikeus #supportwomen #feminism #parenting
A conversation with my GYN. “Hello Dr. MYGYN?”
“Hello, Ms. Karp. So your message says “Hot Flashes”! You’re in menopause! Congratulations.”
“Wait, what?
“Are you still lubricating nicely? At your last appointment, you were, like you were still 25.”
“Well. I’m not sure. But wait. I need to know what’s happening to my body.”
“Well, you said you’re having hot flashes, right? Are you?”
“Yes. They started around Christmas time.”
“So yes, congratulations! You’re in menopause!”
“Wait, what does that mean?”
“Well, it’s a little different for you, since you have the partial hysterectomy ten years ago. Usually, it’s when women stop menstruating, which you already have.”
“So what’s next?”
“Well, you’ll have these hot flashes and then you’ll be done!’
“What about hormone replacement therapy? Do I need to come in for…”
“No, no, no, we don’t do that anymore. No. No chemicals. Just natural transition. Unless you’re having a very very very bad time.”
“What qualifies as a very very very bad time, Dr. MYGYN?”
“Ah. You know. Disorientation. You can’t sleep. You’re not able to function at work. These kinds of things.”
“What about sex…”
“Oh you can have sex. You just have to use lube. Lots and lots of lube. Okay?”
“Uh.”
“Okay, just call me anytime you have questions. Be well.”
Buh-bye.

In today’s BARB, I am nostalgic for the days when I shuttled my child around on weekends; now that she’s a Teenager, I spend my weekends alone as she dives into schoolwork, her book, her friends. Oh yes the days are indeed long and the years ever so short! Also the #womenintheworld conference is on and there are some amazing talks with #hillaryclinton #justintrudeau #cecilerichards and more. Check all of this out and more on today’s Barbmagazine.com link is in the bio #supportwomen #ladieslikeus #doyourdream
Oh so much going on. I’m really happy that I did the college tours with my daughter. It was invigorating. Also a reminder that she’s about to launch. Also did you know the Nevada ratified the ERA? Or that Cindy Sherman has a new show this time confronting ageism? Or that Roxane Gay won’t answer certain questions? Well all that and more is in today’s BARB. Link in the bio. Please check it all out. #maxinewaters #cindysherman #era #supportwomen #ladieslikeus #corsets #collegetours
Hello to Wednesday! I have three basic guidelines to why I swipe left when it comes to online dating. Go to barbmagazine.com /link in bio to see what they are. What are yours? I’ll start adding them to the list! What else? Oh everything. Let’s get into it. #ladieslikeus #supportwomen #doyourdream #sarahsilverman #whyiswipeleft #onlinedating #letsgolove
I was planning on leaving the world of online dating on my birthday (it was in March) but The Teenager reminded me how important OKC was to her stand up act, so I've kept it live. The emails I get from men are, as Lynn Harris would say, #comedygold. So, I'm back to some basic guidelines, three very straightforward reasons as to why I swipe left. Check them out and also my interview with Lynn Harris, founder of Comedy Gold and a new vibrator review and some other fun things! #ladieslikeus #supportwomen
I’m a pro-sex cheerleader; I think every woman should know the power she has in her dominant hand. I believe as well that toys can be used to your advantage. Ladies I found a vibrator that is the Hitachi Magic Wand Heiress Apparent: the @adamandevesa Magic Massager. Go to barbmagazine.com/pillow talk to read all about it. #ladieslikeus #magicwand #adamandeve #vibrators #getonit
For my generation, “having it all” is a loaded challenge; does it have the same resonance to anyone anymore though!? How about you? I discuss my take on “all” (hint: you define your all) in today’s barb; please check it out and comment, I welcome the feedback as well as wondering where the missing DC girls are, #alyssamastromonaco and #uzoaduba And #shirleymaclaine in today’s barbmagazine.com; link in bio. #ladieslikeus #supportwomen #happymonday
Another edition of a Day In A Life: gym, parenting, lunch, friends and stuff! Take a look, have a read. I’ve also got vibrator reviews– the Lipstick sized Mia 2 and an updated Magic Wand– plus a home made manicure from the ladies at @spiritual takenit all in, link in the bio or go to barbmagazine.com 🏄🏽♀️🏄🏽♀️😛#slowbeauty #fitness #equinox #thewing #goodfriends #ladieslikeus #barbmagazine #sparitual #vibrators #lelo #adamandeve #magicwand
Experiment with your vibrators! Not every one will work for you but there will be one (and more I hope) that does. I put the vibrator reviews up–test driven by my discerning crew–in hopes that there will be something that tickles a chord for you. The Mia 2 (our latest review) is a great example of a vibrator that is highly recommended due to its ability as well as its pure discretion in design: it looks like another tube of lipstick! This means–and this is key–you can carry it with you always and you can use it throughout your day! We all have taxing lives; the idea that you can excuse yourself, slip behind a closed door and use the Mia 2 is simply divine. Go to barbmagazine.com and find out more about the Mia 2 from @lelo_official right now! And good morning! #lelo #mia2 #vibrators #barbmagazine #ladieslikeus #pleasureprinciple
We talk a lot about supporting women. In today’s BARB I give several suggestions as to how. Like have friends who are female. Seek female candidates. Look for female mentors. Check out barbmagazine.com for all that and more. Link in bio. #supportwomen #feminism #supportyourfriends
