Everyone. This was the first film directed by an African-American woman to get a general release in the United States. It’s notoriously hard to find and criminally underseen and it is now streaming of Netflix, as of today, 6/14/17. Please please please go watch it.

Hi! I'm a woman of color who is a senior in hs, considering attending uci. I have a passion for social justice and as I was going down your uci tag, I noticed a lot of articles about anti-blackness that worry me a lot about attending the school. Would you say that you still enjoyed attending uci and was able to find your niche within the school? I'm just really curious about your experience. Sorry if this is annoying 😬
Hi! I asked some of my friends from UCI to get some more perspectives. The main takeaways seem to be that, yeah UCI’s campus climate and the surrounding affluent Irvine suburbs can be rather hostile, though in that environment some people definitely found/built strong-knit communities such as in the Black Student Union and in social justice work. Folks noted remembering some really great faculty that helped their experience. And also that UCI probably isn’t any less or more anti-Black than other schools.
Those comments reflect much of my experience too. A lot of the issues on campus were very painful, even traumatizing, but I was able to find and connect with and learn from many great people, especially radical women of color, who were doing great things at UCI. Particularly, I found a home in the Cross-Cultural Center and the various ethnic organizations there.
Hope that helps!
