This awesome Cuboid Balloon is the work of artist Junya Ishigami. It was constructed in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, Japan. The balloon contains a massive aluminum truss and weighs over a ton, but it was filled with helium, so it really is floating there. If we saw it in person we’d really have to fight the urge to (gently) poke at it.

Matchstickmen: Burnt Matches Resembling Charred Human Heads by Wolfgang Stiller
While living in Beijing several years ago German artist Wolfgang Stiller acquired several head molds and large pieces of wood. After experimenting with the various components the artist struck on an idea to create several large-scale burnt matches where the charred remains of each tip appeared as the face of a human, a series he calls Matchstickmen. While Stiller leaves the meaning of the artworks open for interpretation the pieces exist in a surprisingly strange area between morbid and humorous. At a distance each match seems almost laughable in its appearance almost like a toy bobblehead, but up close the somber, lifeless faces often resting in coffin-like matchboxes are pretty disconcerting.

Solitary Human Figures Project Bright Starry Lights, Mihoko Ogaki
In Milky Way - Breath, artist Mihoko Ogaki takes the mystery of the night sky and combines it with sculptures of the human body. Each figure is formed out of plastic and then embedded with bright LEDs, which shine through thousands of little holes and illuminate the surrounding walls. The results are a bright starry sky, projected outward from the dying figures.
The series of work represents both life and death. In a bright room, the dying bodies appear morbid and in pain, but, when the lights go off, the suffering seems to disappear into a delightful, twinkling display. One review states, “Ogaki takes the emotions of our human condition and gives them a physical presence.” The sparkling figures create an environment of tranquility, in which viewers are encouraged to calmly, and without distress, contemplate the human condition of life and death.

Bad Dog
Bad Dog, a 28 foot tall sculpture of a black Labrador, has been installed on the side of the Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) in Newport Beach, California, as part of the “Richard Jackson: Ain’t Painting a Pain” exhibition, the first retrospective devoted to the 74 year old artist.

This pleasingly placid behemoth is the Hope Hippo, a delightful depiction of a serenely wallowing hippo that’s made of mud and displayed with a live person sitting atop it reading a newspaper. The installation was created in 2005 by Allora & Calzadilla, a collaborative duo of visual artists based in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Artist Turns Unwanted Credit Cards into Wearable Art

The Viennese Museum of Applied Art is a typical example of Ringstrasse architecture: an elegant, richly ornamented Neo-Renaissance building with an inner peristyle hall and galleries. Upon entering the building, the visitor finds himself/herself, surprisingly, in a darkened, curved space: soon he/she discovers that he/she is standing under large, slanted scaffolding. He/she instinctively walks to the right, where there is a way out. When he/she returns to the daylight, he/she finds himself/herself in the Museum hall, standing next to a thirteen-meter high tilted wall covered in red silica sand. The wall slices the inner space of the Museum diagonally across two floors, slashing razor-like through pillars and balustrades up to the ceiling. The wall, tilted at a 45° angle and with a base thirty-five meters long, is a fragment of one side of a pyramid which could continue in the exterior of the Museum building.
