the corruption has always been an interesting fear to me. a lot of people tend to be disgusted by some aspects of it, but i find it beautiful. what is it like being consumed by a thing that loves you? was it ever scary in the beginning?

I have certainty, a luxury I didn't know before

Im never alone, I always have a purpose of some kind

I couldn't go back to being without them

But at first it was scary, not knowing what they'd do to me after i saw what they'd done to my father. I doubted they'd be kind.

I was wrong though, obviously, and I can never repay them for all they've given me

I know that you basically feed on fear, but have you ever had human flesh before? :(

once. i don't think i'll ever do that again though. my cluster is the only part of me that should touch flesh in that way i think, they enjoy it more than i did i think.

How old are you? How many years have you been an Avatar for?

It's sort of hard to place, certain functions in the body don't work so well when in the sorts of conditions I live in so aging's a little funny. I suppose I've sort of been preserved by the salt and my cluster

I know I became an avatar, as you say, a few years after my brother left for mainland. I'm a few years younger so I will have been maybe,, 23? 25? I know I'm older now. Who knows by how much though hah

Ships do look a little different than they did at the start but not by much so it can't have been more than 40 years I'd say

I always dread this question as well. I have spent the last... however many years of our life consumed with all-encompassing love, and we are expected to, what, count the days?

Our only landmark is that I joined the hive when I was still at the university. Perhaps 19 or 20 years old? I wish I had found it sooner.

You have a brother? What happened to him?

All I know is he'd moved out to the mainland. I'm sure he wrote at some point but I never heard anything before i left too.

Our town was a small place, he needed more than what we had to offer.

Is there someone or something in particular that you hold dear to you?

There isn't much I have to hold. The idea that my brother feels his choices were worth it maybe?

The only tangible thing I truly hold dear is my cluster. And maybe Cordelia, she's made the seas a much friendlier place for me.

How would one hypothetically become an avatar of the Corruption?? (totally asking for a friend 👉👈)

urhhm.. i'm not sure i can give you a method that would guarentee you become an avatar- i know lots of people find books that provide a glimpse into this life? I did no such thing though

The corruption isn't necessarily something you can find, it comes to you. finds you and gives you new life.

I expect it's a little different for everyone but i watched my pa change, crumble in resistence and i swore if whatever came for him came for me , i would not fall as he did. obviously i didn't hah :]

look, i hope your friend is careful. you can find a lot of truely horrific things in search and they will find you right back.

What do you think of the other fears/entities? Are there any that you'd avoid?

hm.. interesting question

i can't say I've met too many others, and the majority of the few I have met weren't too dissimilar to myself. similar affiliations n all. Then theres the ones who lurk in the expanse, i've met a fair few on the seas. i can see why they'd like it!

while i can't say about all of them, i avoid the lonely ones. there is no love there. i have never felt more trapped than when i made the mistake of joining that crew.

What's the longest time you've ever been on one boat?

That's.. hm aye that's a tough one

I know there've been some that lived months? those were cargo ships mostly, huge ugly things.

You can tell when they're designed well because it'll take a lot of damage to create a real issue. Also shows the quality of the crew if they can sort it faster than the weakness can spread.

I think the longest I've ever been on one boat must've been 9 months? a year? I'm not sure. It felt like we were doing circles of the atlantic. over and over and over never touching land. I have no clue how the crew we keeping it together and we just couldn't latch on. Nothing would take.

We left that one. Hopped off in a lifeboat the second we realised it wasn't going down and it wasn't gonna dock. It should NEVER take that long to get from the UK to the Americas if that was even where we were headed.

Nate, do you have a home or place to live at all?

Well,, my heart is in the seas

But no I suppose I'm something of a nomad - I'll stay on boats? They usually take you on all sorts of journeys

Most of the time I'll just bunker down for a couple weeks maybe longer depending on well- how long it stays afloat or how long it takes to be clocked I suppose
