“So what’d you think?” Cam giggles, and Amira whips the chair around to face her.
“Was that a giant bloody fish?!” Amira demands, visibly startled by the jumpscare.
Cam shrugs. “Mayyybe.” She laughs again. “It’s eldritch horror. You’re supposed to be mystified.”
“I am not mystified by the giant fish.” She sounds almost petulant, maintaining her indignant demeanor for another second before she gives in and smiles back at Cam. “That was certainly an experience.”
“One of the games ever,” Cam agrees. She sighs contentedly, then tenses slightly when she remembers what she’s repeatedly agreed to do today. “So, uh, listen. We should play something else if you have time, but first I need to… say something.”
Amira tilts her head. “I do have time. What is it? Is everything all right?”
Cam nods, feeling her heartbeat begin to quicken. “Everything’s fine. Just, er… well, I—“ Her stomach drops, and she grips the edge of the bed, grateful to be sitting down. As the floor seems to fall away, she fights back memories of the Vast, urging herself to stay focused. “Sorry, I… don’t know why this is so scary.”
“It’s all right,” says Amira gently.
“I…” Cam shuts her eyes, managing to force the words out with lungs that feel impossibly tight. “I really like you, and I was wondering if you wanted to maybe go on a date some time.” She opens her eyes, fearful of the expression Amira might be wearing, but she looks almost unconcerned.
“Well. Yes. You haven’t exactly been subtle about it,” Amira points out.
“…So do you? Want to date?” Cam asks hopefully.
Amira hesitates before answering. “I… how to say it? I like you too, if that hasn’t been made clear.”
“It has not,” Cam confirms before fully processing the admission. “Wait, you—? You do? So then—?”
“It isn’t that simple for me,” Amira continues. “We are still in the process of becoming.” The ladybirds all over her body open their wings, making themselves larger, as if insistent on being noticed. “You may like me now, but some day there might not be a ‘me’ anymore. I believe my consciousness will ultimately merge with the hive, and the concept of identity will cease to have meaning. I wouldn’t subject you to… losing me in that way.”
Cam pauses. “But you don’t know that will happen.”
“I suppose not,” she admits. “It seems the most likely course of events.”
“And we like each other now.”
Amira blushes slightly. “Apparently.”
“So isn’t it—God, what’s the cliché—‘better to have loved and lost,’ or whatever?”
“Spoken like a poet.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Cam rolls her eyes. “It’s nice of you to try and protect me, but you’re doing it again. Making a decision for me because you’re afraid of me getting hurt.”
“That’s not—” she cuts herself off, considering. “All right. Perhaps I am.”
“I can decide things for myself,” Cam insists. “And one of the things I’ve decided is that I like you. And all your pretty ladybirds.” She stretches out a hand, inviting Amira to join her. “Even if you change, even if you keep merging together, I’ll still like you.”
Amira takes her hand, meticulously clearing away the ladybirds first, and crosses the room to sit next to her on the bed. “So you want to be… what, girlfriends?”
Cam turns her body to face her, tucking one leg under herself. “Don’t you?”
“…It sounds nice,” Amira admits. “Although I don’t know how much affection I could offer while keeping my ladybirds under control.”
“Hey, if we’re gonna be girlfriends then you need to stop worrying so much about letting them touch me. That’s in the rules.” Cam squeezes her hand. “Just let them do their thing. I’ll live.”
Amira shakes her head. “Why are you so insistent on being bitten?”
Cam grins at her. “Because the first time it happened, you said I looked beautiful.”
There’s a pause, then Amira smiles back. “You’re always beautiful.”
“You think so?” she teases. “All ten thousand of you?”
Amira laughs. “Oh, we’re all in agreement on this one.”
“Can I kiss you?” Cam blurts out, then reddens. “Sorry. Kind of random. I really want to kiss you. I mean, I haven’t kissed anybody before so it’s definitely scary, but I feel safe with you and I’m having a nice time and I just—” She cuts herself off with an intake of breath. “Can I…?”
Amira nearly matches her ladybirds in color. “I… have some of them in my mouth.”
“You know I don’t care.”
True to her word, Cam says nothing when one of the bugs finds its way onto her lower lip and bites down. She gently moves it aside, and her and Amira taste the blood together.
There's a knock on Cam's window. Perched on her windowsill is a man, wearing a green three-piece suit. He has curly and windswept black hair, and his face—save for piercing green eyes—is hidden behind an ornately carved mask. Most unusually, however, is the fact that he has absolutely massive wings. They're patterned like a peacock, and appear to take up more space than the rest of him, and he doesn't exactly have a meager frame.
He impatiently taps the window again, gesturing for Cam to open it.
[she startles at the first knock, but recovers quickly and smiles, opening the window.] hi! i'm guessing you're the avatar i ordered? i like your wings.
um? i guess you could pick me up? are we like... going to the sky? because the other vast avatar--she just left--took me into the middle of the ocean and it was very scary, zero out of ten, would not recommend. is this gonna be the same feeling?
oh! my name's--wait, you know my name, i sign all my posts. uh, who are you?
He steps next to Cam, before knocking one of her legs out from under her and catching her, carrying her bridal style.
"We'll be in the sky at first. Just past the clouds, I'm afraid I'm a rather... theatrical sort."
Outis explains calmly as he carries Cam to the window. He shifts his grip on her, probably to ensure he won't drop her, then he launches into the air, wings expanding to grab the wind and ascend.
[her eyes are focused on him, carefully avoiding looking either up or down.] nice to meet you, i guess. good time to mention i don't do great with heights? [she laughs weakly.]
[she opens her mouth as if to say more, then shuts it, her heart rate and breathing both quickening as they grow further from the ground.]
Cam notices something odd. Outis' mask is glowing slightly. Or, more accurately, certain symbols are glowing. Just below his eyes is a bank of rolling fog—or, more probably, cloud—spanning the width of his mask. The left half is glowing a stark yellowish-blue, like sun licking through clouds.
On the topic of clouds, the two just now breached them. It's a faintly painful brief minute—clouds aren't as soft as they look—before they're above the clouds.
It's beautifully sunny above the clouds, if a bit cold. Outis flares his wings out, leaving him looking like a depiction of icarus.
And, like icarus, he too must fall.
He tucks into a dive, sending them plummeting far faster than they should back into the clouds. It's like slamming into a stiff mattress, if such things were sharp. At least they're out quick, into... an endless sky, nothing but the evening sky visible in all directions... except for something opposite of where Cam presumes the sun to be, something so big that it fills the entire direction.
shitshitshitshitshit. [on instinct, she's wrapped her arms around him tightly, clutching his suit for dear life. her terrified mumbling is barely audible over the rushing wind.] i'm gonna die, i'm gonna fucking die, this is how i die... or else i already died and this is hell... fuck fuck fuckfuckfuck.
[she's starting to shake now, her breath coming in short gasps.] where the fuck--are we? where are we--going? [she asks quietly, as if to herself.]
