been a while, here's some progress on the coding end

added overworld partners (no functionality yet, just the follow sprite)

made the "grounded" partners that don't float, be able to follow you around on the ground and jump whenever you do

switched from 3D gameplay to 2.5D to scale down on the scope a little while still keeping the cool 3D environments and some mechanics (seen in the video)

added the hammer, fixed up the animations code so it's less cluttered and easier to add to

shadows now properly follow the ground angle
