Two Cups to Go:
Springtime in New York City always brought the heaviest rain storms and today was no exception. The dark clouds were scattered overhead covering any ray of sunshine to peek through, leaving only the dark gloom to cast its shadow over the city dwellers. “I went in and paid for the last overnight run, now it's your turn Amaro.” Olivia let out a sigh of frustration as she raked her hair away from her face as Nick gave a soft smile and shrug “ Yeah yeah, don't lose sight of him while I run inside.” He teased as he exited the drivers side of the car and jogged his way across the street to the 24 hour diner.
Low dives were the best places to get decent coffee past any hour of the day, and their coffees sure as hell beat ‘cop coffee’. Rushing inside, shaking off a few droplets from his hair Nick made his way to the counter of the diner where his eyes caught the attention of a familiar figure, rustling against the back door and some boxes “Need help over there?” He offered already darting towards the back as the young lady turned her back towards him as she rested the boxes against the counter “Nope. I got it all covered. What can I do for you?” She asked not even bothering to cast a side glance at Nick, which did hurt his ego but he knew the reality of her hesitation.
It was only a few months since she had been attacked at this diner by a patron and the SVU team did instruct her to be more cautious and less friendly, well that slip of information was mainly Nick's selfish doing. “Just Benson’s regular and tea for myself please.” He asked as she finally glanced up from her notepad that she was pretending to jot notes in. “Detective Amaro! You didn't sound like yourself for a minute. I'm sorry about that, I’ll get those started for you.” (Y/N) said her winning smile on full display.
The only rays of light Nick needed to keep his day going, besides Gil and Zara. “It seems pretty slow in here today, where is everyone? “ Nick asked, taking a seat at the bar looking around to see empty booths and tables “Detective Amaro you do know it's 7AM on a Tuesday morning right? There may be no sleep for the NYPD and bad guys but everyone else definitely gets their fill.” She teased as he nodded, chuckling to himself as she handed him his order.
“You know you're right, I didn't even realize the week had just begun.” He continued taking the cups in each hand “Well cause SVU doesn't believe in the magical words of ‘Day Off’.” Laughing at her own joke, only meant she was tugging on Nick’s heart strings more and more. “Right again. What are you going to school for ? To be a lawyer? I think you might have this ADA thing down packed.” He teased as a shy blush appeared across her face “ I’ll keep dreaming Detective. You have a good day, and stay safe out there.” She said wiping down the part to enhance its already shiny laminate. “You too (Y/N).” Nick said heading towards the door readying himself to exit the diner and just as he was about to open the door he remembered Gil’s voice in his head.
“Hey, before I go, Gil wanted me to invite you to his baseball game, he said it would mean a lot to him if you would be on the sidelines cheering for him. “ Nick felt his throat swelling at the mere ask, he was a grown man not a love sick teenager and yet this girl had the power to make him break out into a sweat and become a nervous wreck at the flip of a switch and she didn't even know it.
“Well… sure, I wouldn't want to let Gil down, he's a sweet kid.” She replied softly, locking eyes with Nick as he cleared his throat, nodding “Okay, great so me and Zara will pick you up on Friday from here at 5?” He confirmed as she nodded. “It’s a deal.” She said as Nick nodded once more before opening the door and jogging back to the car to escape from the rain.
Once he was back in the car and shielded from the rain he passed Olivia her cup and coffee and quietly sipped on his tea “What happened to you in there? Your whole mood changed.” Olivia teased knowing exactly what caused the shift in his mood “Nothing, got me some warm tea and energy to catch our prep. Any movement?” Nick asked, completely ignoring her statement, trying to minimize his smirk to not have to face Olivia's side eye as she refocused her attention to the door catching their prep trying to sneak off “It's time.” She commented as Nick placed the car in drive.
