On December 16, 1944, Nazi forces launched a surprise counterattack in the densely forested Ardennes region of Wallonia in eastern Belgium. The Nazis planned to encircle and destroy the primarily-American forces there. The Americans, fighting ill-clothed, ill-supplied, and in blizzard conditions, dug foxholes as their only protection against a relentless barrage of artillery, mortar, and small arms fire. There are thousands of them in these woods. The Nazi assault on the Ardennes led to what was the deadliest battle for U.S. forces during WWII—and the second deadliest in American history. The Americans suffered 89,500 casualties including 19,000 killed and 23,000 missing. And yet, they still emerged to deliver a blow to the Nazis that forced them into retreat and a downward spiral toward eventual surrender. As we approach the holidays, it’s important to remember how the freedom to enjoy those holidays has been purchased for us. We are living in uncertain times, to be sure. But taking the time to reflect on the sacrifices made by our WWII Veterans and all Veterans since puts some of our current troubles in perspective. As we look back on the Battle of the Bulge, the voices of our WWII Veterans echo out from these woods telling us that with clear determination we can handle anything. All The Way.
Bad day rabbit hunting, but way better day than at work. 🐰 we got a lot more snow than we thought but figured we would let the boys run anyway. Just in case one rabbit decided to venture out this morning. No such luck but lots of doggy hugs ❤️
I will tell my daughter, don’t ever beg for someone’s time. Don’t ever beg for someone’s attention. And don’t ever beg for someone’s love.
