June 2015 Wahluke Key Communicator #waedchat
Dear Key Communicators! Thanks you so much for helping spread the awesome news about the mighty Wahluke School District. Here’s the latest! GREAT YEAR! This was probably one of our best years yet for the Wahluke School District. Three schools received the Apple Grant and we are going to “Exceed Expectations” by going 1:1 in the other schools next school year! Our district’s vision of “First a reader then a LEADER” is truly coming to fruition! Five years ago what’s happening right now in our district was one of our goals and seeing it become a reality for our community, students and staff is truly amazing! We are considered a “TURN-AROUND” district by many in the state because of the what’s happening in our district!
AWARDS At the beginning of the 2015-16 school year we will be announcing the winners of the 2014-15 school year awards! Some of the awards include: Rookie teachers or the year, Secretary of the year, Veteran teachers of the year, Exceeding Expectations Teacher award, Bus driver of the year, Custodian of the year, Connector’s of the year, Innovators of the year. I’m excited to give out these awards out to recognize and support our staff’s hard work!! MATTAWA MAKE-OVER
A lot of people are talking (positively) about the town of Mattawa and how there seems to be some positive momentum building! The town’s murals and flowers are giving a more inviting and welcoming feel! I want to thank the mayor, the council, the school board, local businesses, donators, and artists for their support in helping make this happen. If you would like to donate to help with the cost of paints and supplies go to the district website and click donate or just come up to the district office! You will get a plaque with your name on it to commemorate your support to make this happen for our town and community!

Dear Key Communicators,
I have been reflecting a lot recently over my last five years in the district…i think that happens when you hit 40! All five years have been some of my best…but each year (like life) brings its own challenges. It seems on a daily basis I’m working with staff, students, and principals to solve the many day-to-day unexpected student and staffing challenges school districts face across the state. As you can imagine our district faces different challenges than more affluent and less remote districts. With all these challenges, as the superintendent I am ultimately responsible for all six schools, 2200 students, 130+ staff, district finances, instruction, student achievement, student and staff safety, programs, staffing, transportation, etc. Which ultimately means many times I am busy working with my principals, my business manager, auditors, lawyer, etc. to tackle the day-to-day crisis. I told someone recently it depends on if it’s a full moon or not what a given day, week, or month might hold. The funny thing is from 7th grade on all I ever wanted to be was a teacher! Sometimes LIFE just happens and you end up where you never expected to be. I have a strong faith though that each of us are exactly where we are supposed to be!
I remember vividly my first year in the district i was informed that we didn’t have enough buses to transport all our students. I thought to myself…no one told me about this! lol (laugh out loud) However, we quickly brought the district leaders together and we ran every idea across the table until we came up with a solution. Another example was when we received the official letter from the state superintendent saying that your district had three schools in step 5 and we had to prepare a plan to put schools on the right path. Again we brought the district leaders together and we came up a plan to help our K – 1 Mattawa Elementary and Saddle Mountain Intermediates 2 – 4 student overload and transition issues. I can tell you story after story of a challenge we faced each year in a school or at the district level and how we worked as a team to solve it.
Like many in our community and district i am very excited about where we are right now as a district and where we are going! When you read the timeline below think about it in terms of positive momentum & energy. Momentum is an organizations best friend! Please feel free to share!
Here’s a quick timeline of some of our teaching staffs hard work to make sure our students have the best education possible!

2010-11: Social Media/Technology push begins – Facebook likes – 0 (Quote from teacher Andy Harlow, “ Why would he want to do that? {C: “, Quarterly Newsletter begins, Reconfiguration approved,
2011-12: Elementary schools are reconfigured and re-staffed into three K – 5, iPad push, Bilingual program updated, Whole brain teaching begins (stores learning into longterm memory through movement and repetition) After school Intramurals begins to keep students busy after school.
2012-13: Technology & instructional innovation continues, New Principal and Teacher evaluations begin, Staff begin using twitter throughout the district to showcase their classroom, students, and districts.
2013-14: Technology & instructional innovation continues, All employee applications are now done online, Major program audit reveals NO actions items (first time ever!),
2014-15: Mattawa Makeover begins! Apple Grant awarded for three schools, Facebook Likes: 2000 +- Thousands of Warrior fans engaged weekly & monthly! Principal Andy Harlow , “I am the King of social media! {C: ” Many staff continue to use social media for professional development and to showcase student work, etc. Quarterly District Newsletter, High School begins broadcasting Varsity sports and other events online viahttp://ift.tt/YSEf4i, Ron Clark Academy influence begins, Our award winning band receives uniforms! They are also Marching in Wenatchee this weekend!
2015-16: Preschool – 12th grade 1:1 iPad begins! Sean Langdon and Mia Benjamin take Saddle Mountain and High School to the next level! 100% of Admin and teachers are on new the state’s new evaluation system. Seven to ten new murals are placed on main street in Mattawa!

I can’t believe spring break is almost here! The blue sky and sunshine feels awesome! Here’s the latest about the mighty Wahluke school district! Please feel free to forward and share this information!
NEW Director of Programs and Instruction After our business manager Clinton Sherman was hired mid-year by the Richland school district we had and opportunity to expand our district knowledge around teaching and learning by transferring Teri Davison to business manager position and search for a person who can help take the district’s programs soar to even higher levels. We have found that person in Esmeralda Villarreal. She has been a principal in both the Othello and Wapato school districts! We are so excited to have her passion, knowledge, and energy in the Wahluke for 2015-16 school year!
I want to thank Mrs. Davison for all her hard work and dedication as a program director. It’s truly a tough job because of all the strings attached to the various grants that support our many district programs and students. Teri is the only programs director I’ve had to have a totally clean audit with no action items during last years CPR (Consolidated Federal Program Review).
As a former athletic coach I was always looking for talent to help our team win! Now as a superintendent I do the same, however it’s all about helping all our students, staff and community win! Please help welcome Mrs. Villarreal by sending her a quick email to [email protected]
High School Dean of Students Ceaser Ortiz Cesar has been a instructional coach, teacher, and also helped coordinate the Language Academy this year. Next year he will be transferred to the high school to take on student discipline, attendance and bring his expert level of technology skills to the 1:1 iPad grant.
Mattawa Makeover A mural by local artist Ben Wallace is nearing completion. It’s in its early stages but we wanted you to take a look at what your donations are helping make happen for our town and community. It’s of a couple old cowboys from the Mattawa area!
Henry Gerdes is on the right in the mural. If you know the family please have them contact me so that we can get more information to complete the mural to honor their families historical contribution to the community!

New High School Principal I have selected Mia Benjamin as the new Wahluke high school principal. Her expertise around instruction, knowledge of the district, community, and relationships with staff and students will allow her to quickly take the high school to new levels. When i called her down to my office to inform her of my decision she informed me that she would not let me or the community down. She’s a person of her word and I’m so excited to see the school transform into a high-tech superpower! Apple Training We truly have been blessed as a district to receive this grant! A team of us went to the opening training in San Diego recently and we were blown away with how Apple relieved our stress and how this will be a “Water-Shed” moment for the district, staff, parents, and students! Every student in the district next year will receive their own iPad and staff will be trained to integrate this technology into their classroom so that students will take more ownership in their learning and their “God Given” talents will be allowed shine. These iPads will be another tool we will use to ensure all students are reaching grade level learning standards! Leadership Training I recently had the opportunity to get trained and certified by leadership guru John Maxwell. John has written 80+ books on leadership. One of his most popular books is the 21 irrefutable laws of leadership. John’s mantra is “Everything RISES and falls on leadership” and I truly believe this in my heart. The first law, the “Law of the Lid” state’s that a persons leadership ability will determine their effectiveness in both life and work. So on a 1 – 10 scale if you’re a 4 leader you will only be able to raise your business to a 4…no more! That’s why developing and raising our leader’s and student’s lids in our schools is so important! Our schools, country, and the world needs strong leadership! New Mattawa Murals We will be unveiling the new murals in April on main street in Mattawa! Flowers are also being grown and prepped to be put out on main street once it warms up a little more. We are so excited to be partnering with the city to help make this happen. I remember when i went to meet Mayor Esser to pitch our leadership team’s idea of the make-over project. The smile on her face and the excitement lit up the room! I’m sure she is pleased with our progress! Administrative Openings Our director of finance, Clinton Sherman has been hired by the Richland School District. We thank him for his work in Wahluke and wish him and his family the best! He will be leaving in March so I have transferred Teri Davison into this finance position and we will be soon opening a “Director of Programs & Instruction.” Adding to our expertise and knowledge around teaching & learning has to be a priority when you’re in the business we are in! Teri Davison as you know has extensive knowledge around program budgeting and compliance. Her father who was in the finance and banking business I’m sure is very proud of her following in his footsteps!

Murals, Murals, Murals! As I’ve said recently we have murals in the works to be installed over the next few months. Our hope is that the city of Mattawa will consider ordinances around graffiti cleanup and also one that will limit the amount of flyers/posters posted around town so that these beautiful murals will be displayed to visitors and potential future employees in the appropriate manner. Businesses, local property owners, investors, etc. are benefitting as we all start working together to improve our community!

2015 is here and AWESOME things are happening in our district and community! Please feel free to share/forward this information.
Here’s the latest:
Admin Transfers 15-16 Principal Mullen next school year will be transferred back to the secondary where he started his career in Wahluke four years ago. I cannot tell you enough how much I appreciate his work over the last four year. I care very much about him and his family and I know he will do great things at the secondary level next school year.
Sean Langdon, who is currently a vice principal at the Junior High and a former teacher at Saddle Mountain will become the new Principal for Saddle Mountain Elementary next school year. He is a very talented young man who will bring high energy and lead the school to new heights in next years 1:1 iPad environment.
Lastly, Mr. Pietila has informed me that he will be looking to find a position closer to his family next school year. His work and the high schools many awards are a tribute to both he and his staff. I will be looking to try and fill his shoes with a principal who is an innovative out of the box thinker in preparation for the 1:1 iPad grant this next year!
The Mattawa Make Over Project This project is moving forward and as I’ve said recently we have four to five new murals in development that will be installed this spring! Our schools who have adopted the various sections of main street have some exciting plans for this spring as well! The cost of supplies (paint, plywood, clear coat, etc) is significant and any support from local businesses, organizations, and community members is welcomed. We have three levels of donations that can be made by you or your business… Copper, Silver and Black. You and/or your businesses names will be printed on the plaques so that in the future community members know who helped make the make-over project a reality. HAPPY THANKSGIVING! It’s been a HISTORIC month! We have a lot to be thankful for! Here’s the latest! Please feel free to share and forward this information!
Historic Events We have had another historic month in our school district! Three schools were awarded the APPLE ConnectED grant this month and we are now moving to a 1:1 environment where every student will have their own learning device! As I look back at other pivotal events in our recent history here’s a few just off the top of my head:
1. Re-configuring our four schools to reduce transitions and help overcrowding.
2. Updating our bilingual program.
3. Embracing social media and technology as a way to connect with our community and region.
4. Beginning our first year of our Mattawa Make-Over project.
5. The creation of our district road-map which focuses all district and school goals.
6. 5D & 5D+ Cel Framework is creating a common language around teaching and learning and taking instruction to the next level across the district!
7. Providing online streaming of Varsity sports and other events via http://ift.tt/YSEf4i e.g. We will be streaming our long term facilities planning meeting at 3:30 p.m. on December 9th!
8. Historic gains in math, reading, and AMAO (english language proficiency) scores because of our schools focus on research based instruction and the frequent assessment of student mastery in specific grade level standards.
I can go on and on! {C: The hard work and dedication of our Wahluke staff is second to none and I cannot thank them enough for TRULY making Wahluke one of the best district’s in the state!

Here’s the latest!
APPLE GRANT This was truly a team effort to get this grant! However, I want to recognize Ima Terry, Teri Davison, Arthur De Victoria and of course our wild and crazy business manager Clinton Sherman. Also our staff who tweet and share with the world their class and students work every day truly sent a message to Apple and the community. When they reviewed the district and applications it was evident – we are a district that has great things happening and are without a doubt leading the “wolf pack!”
This grant essentially will transform us into one of those innovative districts you read about in a magazine! We will be a 1:1 district! It is truly amazing to have 3 of our schools receive this grant! Because of this, we will be able to shift resources to our other schools so they will also be 1:1.
DISTRICT FACEBOOK OVER 2000 FANS We have officially passed 2000 fans on Facebook! We have more followers then Richland S.D. and many other much larger school districts. In a nutshell, that means that we engage and communicate with a large number people in our community and region. We can literally post a picture, video or other information and have it in front of hundred’s of people in just minutes!
MURAL SOCIETY COMMITTEE The mural committee has selected three proposals for murals that will go up over the next few months! Everyone I have spoken to has expressed how excited they are to see this project continue. Between this Mattawa make-over project and our new APPLE grant we truly are transforming both the city and our schools! Keep the faith! Great things are happening!!! Superintendent Chavez
