The Curated
I was at a small street market off of Brick Lane in London a week ago when I came across a table for Idioma Limited. This brand stands for cultural awareness through the appreciation and education of foreign language. They carry this out through a series of tshirts, sweatshirts, beanies and other accessories. They seek to produce all these products by ethical methods and most are certified organic. They speak of the designs as being innovative and intriguing. Personally I think innovative is a stretch as much of the design and typography stems from very popular and commonly used design trends. However, they are still appealing and the kicker with this brand is the purpose and value behind it all.
I'm interested to see how they continue to develop the look, especially with news of a new line of women's dresses coming soon, with more subtle design. It would also be very interesting to see if they ever branch out into the activation realm and maybe fund some language education programs or something of the sort. Regardless, this is a brand that stands for something positive and that's something I can always get behind.
Check out more of their stuff at their site and be sure to take a look at their blog housed on the site as well. http://www.idioma-uk.com/
And as if they weren't good enough as is. Behold, they kill live just as well.
Everything you need to know about London Grammar best summarized in this 3:26 of dark blissful auditory stimulus.
The Bump
London Grammar. Think Florence + The Machine meets the XX in a dark lit back alleyway in the streets of London. An inner battle raged in me between what I was more captivated by, whether its the powerful and chilling voice of lead singer Hannah Reid, or the soothing dark tones created at the hands of guitarist Dan Rothman and keyboardist/drummer Dot Major. The conclusion I came to is that my desire to figure this out simply meant that these two powerful forces of sound have combined beautifully to create a tension thats producing some seriously entrancing tracks. This is music to get lost in. Equal parts soothing and unsettling. Its as if the sound that comes through the speakers materializes to become a dark room that you are left in with only a small mirror to look back at yourself with. A reflection of who you are and how you feel about it. A vulnerability of sorts.
With one EP (Metal & Dust) and their debut album (If You Wait) having dropped in 2013, and a US tour that is nearing its end, the hype around London Grammar is big and growing. You can also catch them at Lollapalooza this summer. Looking forward to whats ahead for this London trio.
So I have been more than lax on my post flow, but I promise I have a great excuse. I have been in London visiting my sister and exploring the various back alleys and winding, cobbled roads. During that time I brought along 3 cameras ( 2 film and 1 DSLR) and along with my iPhone I spent a ton of time capturing shots of the architecture, signage, culture and street art that makes London such a richly inspiring city. In the weeks to come I will be developing/editing all the photos I took and will be posting them. In the meantime you can check out my instagram ( Timmy2Sox ) and get a preview with the shots I took with my phone. Also I was engulfed with waves of creative content from music, art, fashion, etc. So I will be posting about some of those findings in the meantime as well. In a nutshell, I'm back on my blog grind so thanks for the patience.
The Bump // Frontier Ruckus So it's been a little while since I've posted about a band and I couldn't think of a better group to talk about to get back on track. Simply put Frontier Ruckus are some of the coolest musicians and people in general that I have met in a long while. And that is only surpassed by their talents. I would have never called myself a folk music fan but after seeing them perform I can concretely state that I am now a born again folk enthusiast all thanks to these guys. Whether its the lyrics, vocal harmony, array of instruments, chemistry on stage or plethora of talent, there is much to cling to with "Fruckus". I thoroughly enjoyed helping set up and watching them perform live this weekend in my buddies living room as they are on their super intimate living room tour. Then had an awesome time just chatting with a couple of the guys after their set that seemed to be 20+ songs long. It was an awesome evening and they are a must listen. Check out their music on Spotify, or go to their website and check out the tons of content that they have to offer. You certainly won't regret this. http://www.frontierruckus.com

The Curated // Aubrey Hays Well traveled and well versed, Aubrey displays quite an interesting mood in photography. Her use of human anomaly within environment shows quite the sensitivity to place. Having grown up in the very natural regions of Alaska and Arizona, and going to college in Portland, easily explains why she has such an affinity for the picturesque landscapes that are prevalent in her work. These particular shots are from a series of hers called, Red Herring. They are accompanied by a few more photos and a creative write up that touches on the way us humans blind ourselves from darkness. Almost assuming as though, not seeing something connotes its lack of existence. This series and the other bodies of work she has created all hold a deep humanistic meaning. There is almost a spirituality to them. You can find "Red Herring" and the rest of her work on her website as well as her blog of inspiration. Check her stuff out! http://aubreyhays.net/home.html {All photos are credited to Aubrey Hays from her Red Herring series}
The Curated // Patrick Warner I came across this guys photography by chance and was instantly captured by it. Found myself staring at these images for far longer than I expected. From what seems like very simple stills of Montana backdrops and deserted lots, I found so much story in each shot. There is something so true and ernest about Patrick's captures of place. It is almost as if each of these shots was a particular set, built for a movie about Montana. And the thing that I think may be the most interesting about them all is that I have no idea whether the scene I am now in is one of horror or one of simple dialogue between good friends. It's that juxtaposition of tension and peace that I think makes these worth of a good look. You can check out more of his photography at his flickr page, http://www.flickr.com/photos/27473602@N03/with/12500852623/ {All photos are screen grabs from flickr and credited to Patrick Warner}
The Curated // Chelsey Dyer I want this calendar because its too cool. A 2014 astrology based calendar. I love the design, layout, typography, everything. Chelsey Dyer, the creator of such beauty, is a graphic designer from Texas working in Oakland, California. She makes some really beautifully crafted work with design that is purposeful and very clean. All of her work exhibits a very keen eye for tasteful design. You can check out all of her work at her website: http://chelseydyer.com/ She's also got a great design journal going on her site as well, so make sure to check that out. And lastly but certainly not least-ly, you can purchase this amazing calendar at her Etsy shop, Prismatic Print Shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/prismaticprintshop {All photos are credited to Chelsey Dyer}
The Beauty of an Inch This might be the coolest thing I ever post on this blog. I absolutely love this stuff! So back in the '60s LIFE magazine had two series of textbooks called Science Library and Nature Library. On the back cover of each of these textbooks was a 1 inch by 1 inch graphic illustration. Here are four of my favorite ones. Thanks to Anna Betts (graphic illustrator) you can check out a large amount of these in a flickr photoset she posted. As if you needed anymore reason than my last post to realize that she is awesome. Check it out. http://www.flickr.com/photos/annabetts/sets/72157639734601604/ {All photos are credited to Anna Betts}
The Curated // Anna Betts Really neat stuff here. I am in love with Anna's simple and youthful style of illustration and design. Add that to a healthy serving of texture, pastel color and experimental typography and you got the beautiful aesthetic of Anna Betts. Her work is like a breath of fresh air. Design that is in no way heady or overbearingly intricate. Simply simple without losing purpose. See the rest of her work at her website. She's also got an amazing blog full of really neat finds and photography and design. And don't forget to check out the Etsy shop. All around good stuff. http://www.annabetts.com/ {All photos are of work done by Anna Betts, taken from her website}
The Curated // Swen Swensøn This freelance designer out of Leipzig, Germany has got himself a really dope style. I love his use of simplistic geometric shapes and planar structures to create animals. And his use of this style on various canvases from print, to skateboards and street wear is intriguing. Really interested to see how his body of work continues to expand. You can check out the rest of his work at his website, http://www.swenswenson.com/index.html#firstPage He also has a pretty sweet blog linked on his site as well. Check him out. {All images are designs by Swen Swensøn}
