My name is Alaa. I was injured in the war a so-called "minor" injury, but it never felt minor to me.
On one of the days of the war, while I was in the place I had fled to seeking safety, a missile struck the very area where we were staying. We survived by a miracle, but I did not walk away unharmed. A piece of shrapnel hit my right arm, and as a result, my hand was broken. A broken hand wasn’t just a passing pain it was agony that seeped into every detail of daily life. With every small movement, my body screamed in pain, as if the shrapnel were still lodged inside. But it wasn’t just the physical pain that wore me down it was the lack of medical care, the helplessness, the neglect. The journey toward treatment was painful in itself. There were no modern machines, no proper medications, not even enough painkillers to ease the stabbing aches. I spent endless hours in the crumbling corridors of a worn-down hospital, waiting as the pain pulsed through me. The cast wrapped around my arm was nothing more than a piece of worn-out fabric unfit for wounds, and unworthy of the pain. I didn’t just suffer from the fracture; I suffered from the fracture of humanity around me from being unable to get the treatment I needed. This white bandage on my arm isn’t just a medical wrap it's a small witness to a much larger tragedy, one buried beneath the ruins of homes and lives. This image despite all the pain, holds within it a glimmer of hope, born from the rubble. And still I stand.
Because deep inside, I carry the belief that even broken bodies can rise again and tell the world a story of resilience.
