Rokurokubi by cinemamind
#JLMyōkaioftheday : Rokurokubi and nukekubi 👯
One of the most famous yōkai is the rokurokubi, which is a woman who can magically elongate her neck at night to scare men, or to find lamp oil to eat. A nukekubi is a variant of the rokurokubi, but her head detaches instead, and is usually deadly and vampiric in nature.
Both are regular women by day, but when they fall asleep, they transform into yōkai. 💁🏻💁🏻 #japanloverme Art by @littlemisspaintbrush 🎨
Here is Gomesia fully reassembled. 💕 She’s getting a new set of 3 eyes soon from Bearcalledred, that’ll be fancier heart-eyes. 😍 She’s only wearing 3 of her neck pieces here, instead of all 4. Just felt better at the time. 😊
Rokurokubi (ろくろ首) — one of the yokai spirits in Japanese folklore. Gained popularity in tales with the start of the Edo period. Ordinary people in general, they have been given an enormously long and flexible neck as a punishment (or on a whim of fate). The neck elongates at night, during a sleep, so some people might even be unaware of themselves being a rokurokubi. The more self-aware and mischievous ones, however, enjoy scaring people or playing pranks of different level of harm. In the morning the only things reminding of demonic metamorphosis are bruises and stretch marks on the neck.
I’ve been asked about it a lot, and finally can say that I might be returning to the folklore series (or mini-series, that is). Japanese this time, as you might have guessed) Same as the slavs in 2014, I would be writing short infos, so feel free to message me if there is a particular yokai you think would be interesting to do)
Here’s what I’ve been pouring all my time and energy into lately!!!! So glad to be able to finally share it!
I’ve been designing these yokai themed patterns that will soon be turned into fabric and then into hats by the amazing Misallati Hat Club - an incredibly skilled and chill duo of brothers!!
I’ll post when the hats are available for sale! They’re all gonna be completely hand-made too! I am psyched as hell. I love yokai and Japanese mythology so much, so this project has been an absolute blast.
(PLEASE DO NOT REPOST OR USE THESE PATTERNS WITHOUT PERMISSION)
Stay with me tonight.
