FAR and FRR in biometrics

These days there is a lot of emphasize on FAR (False Acceptance Rate). It is good that clients are getting aware of these terms and asking the right questions before implementing a solution.

However, FAR only provides half the information. When selecting a biometric solution, we need to find out what the false recognition Rate (FRR) is at the said FAR.

So when a biometric solution provider claims to have a very low FAR, it is very important to find out what is the FRR at this ‘low’ FAR. Then depending upon the application one needs to evaluate whether the FAR & FRR ratio is acceptable for the application.

Verification vs. identification in fingerprinting

Fingerprint Verification, also known as 1:1 (one-to-one ) fingerprint matching or Fingerprint Authentication, is the process of confirming that a user is who they claim to be.

Fingerprint Identification, also known as 1:N (one-to-many matching) fingerprint matching, is the process of comparing a fingerprint against all the fingerprints in the database to see if a match is found.

I found the V300 scanner to be extremely sturdy and industrial grade. Most scanners used to be very delicate and “handle with care”.

Storing fingerprint template

Different possible places where a biometric fingerprint template is stored:

Server

In large scale projects the finger prints are captured at the client computers and sent to the server for storage on a central database. This allows the users to be authenticated from multiple locations.

Client

In this scenario the fingerprint templates are stored on the client machines and fingerprint matching also happens on these client machines. This type of design is very rare in enterprise and government applications.

Token

In this design, the fingerprints are stored on a Token, for example on a smart card. This kind of applications are usually fingerprint verification or one to one matching.

Scanner

There are many fingerprint scanners available with a capability to store fingerprint. These scanners come with a built-in fingerprint storage and matching algorithm.

Avoid fingerprint SDK from scanner manufacturers

Fingerprint SDK developed by scanner manufacturers are usually available at a very low cost. The main selling factor for these SDKs is the price. Most of them do not have any license cost.
