Megurine Luka - Rock'n'Roll Riot

Yuyoyuppe just continues to blow me away with their well composed rock songs. They’re amazing at tuning Luka as well so this is just such a solid song for me. It captures the rebellious spirit of rock and reminds us all that it’s not going anywhere any time soon.

Much like People Allergy, this song touches on depression and makes vague hints about self harm. Please listen with caution. The overall message of this tune reminds me of Rolling Girl. While it’s heavy and sounds self defeatist, the singer keeps talking about how they’ll keep trying. Recognize your pain but don’t let it defeat you.

Halyosy’s second collaboration using all of Crypton’s Vocaloids. It has a wonderful message of how without knowing anything about each other we can connect and share our feelings through music. The really cool thing about this song is that in addition to the Vocaloid edition there are also 3 covers using utaite - one with Japanese singers and two using people from all around the globe, versions Amity and Borders.

I didn’t mean to post songs with monochrome videos 3 days in a row, but it’s totally what’s happening. I love how frank and honest KEI’s lyrics are. it makes it feel like someone ripped a page out of a journal and set its contents to a melody. Sadly I think Gumi’s voice sounds uninteresting in this song, but it’s still worth a listen. I wonder how it would sound if Luka were used instead? Probably like a companion to Hello Worker.

Make sure you turn on annotations to see the translation! Today we have another unique monochrome video from EZFG. I love how this particular one evokes the style of stop motion animation. This producer’s tuning of Luka is still one of my favorites ever.
Even without understanding the words, the whole song has this desperate feeling as if someone’s trying so hard to pull you out. My impression of this song is that it’s the voice of someone who is watching another person go through failure or depression. The singer is encouraging- practically begging- this person not to give up, reminding them of the potential inside in the hopes of enacting some magical recovery.
This song is playable on Groove Coaster (both the arcade and mobile app versions) but how they cut it for time is very awkward so it’s a tough one to play.

While the lyrics are open to interpretation and there is no discernibly clear story, a word of caution to anybody bothered by discussion of bad or abusive relationships. That’s what this song sounds like it’s talking about. The musical tone evokes a boss fight in a video game.
What strikes me as interesting is that MARETU’s more recent releases all have this similar, near-monochrome art style. Between that and the darker lyrics, it reminds me a lot of wowaka. I cannot tell you how happy this makes me.

Fukase is one of the newest Vocaloids available, released by Yamaha in January 2016. His name is taken from his vocal provider, Satoshi Fukase, who is lead singer for the band Sekai no Owari.
This song by one of my favorite producers was my first foray into Fukase’s sound and remains my favorite example so far. The tone comes across like a more youthful version of Kaito to me, and I love that MikitoP tied in the slightly creepy vibe of Fukase’s design to the musical melody. I’m looking forward to more wonderful contributions from producers using this Vocaloid in the future.

The translation isn’t exactly spot on because of the attempt to make the English singable but it’s close enough. In this song about unrequited love, the singers remain hopeful (or at the very least content) about their situation. Despite said predicament this song is tremendously catchy! Good luck trying to keep it out of your head.

so, today (march 9th) was supposed to be PowapowaP’s 21st birthday, and to be honest, it’s still hard to believe that he’s gone, and sometimes i was hoping that the news around 7-8 months ago were all lies. but yet, here we are. he’s really gone. i still listen to his music every now and then but i keep having this bittersweet feelings everytime i listen to his music now, and it kinda hurts too. Powapowa’s songs cheered me up a lot, all of his songs were meaningful and you can really see (hear?) that he’s putting a lot of his own feelings in every single words

One of those songs that reminds people not to let societal norms and other people define your worth. In fact, it shares that theme with another of Neru’s songs- Lost One’s Weeping. I especially like the lyric “tear off the price tag that’s on your back”. The musical tone is surprisingly upbeat considering the lyrics’ subject matter, but then I guess one could argue that this song and Lost One’s Weeping are like two different reactions to the same problem.
VY2 and Camui Gackupo - デキナイ詐欺 or Unable to Deceive

A new release from EZFG is here! The musical style of this one reminds me of Daft Punk until the heavier electronic sets in. This is not my favorite song by this producer, but I love that they utilize less common Vocaloids and VY2 with Gakupo is such an interesting combination. Respect to Cysote for making their subtitles’ style match that of the words in the original video.

There’s something very unique about v flower’s tone and I wish there were more songs that utilized this Vocaloid. In combination with the choppy guitar and word pacing it creates an unsettling song that’s also pretty darn catchy.

It seems right to post one of my favorite Vocaloid producers for my return entry, and I was excited to feature DECO*27′s newest release regardless. As I’ve stated before, I adore the darker side of this producer’s discography. They tend to discuss situations and emotions often ignored or downplayed in music and Ghost Rule is no exception. The speaker appears to be someone who has lied so often that they don’t know who their “real” self is anymore. Despite claiming to accept this situation, it also feels like they’re reaching out for help.
There is some speculation that with DECO*27 releasing more PVs there might be a new album release forthcoming. While I certainly hope this is true, it remains simply as conjecture at this point.

Between a family emergency and Youtube’s shenanigans, I’m going to have to place this blog on indefinite hiatus. Hopefully I’ll be back sooner rather than later, but I can’t say for certain.
November Update
Greeting Vocaloid fans! Another month is past us and it’s time for another update.
You may have noticed that my Youtube master lists are looking a little... sparse. It began with Youtube taking down vgperson’s channel, supposedly over copyright claims on Kenshi Yonezu videos. American viewers may also notice that videos of songs by artist like DECO*27, sasakure.uk, Kenshi Yonezu, HoneyWorks, Wonderful Opportunity and more are unplayable. This is purportedly caused by the launch of Youtube Red and is the fault of Google/Youtube, not necessarily the record company or copyright owner. Either way it’s annoying and hopefully gets resolved soon.
Internet Co. has announced MEGPOD V4. Improvements include new character designs for each voice type, FFT optimization, dual library inclusion and improved pronunciation. You can read more about it through this helpful post by opalvocaloid.
Crusher-P has announced that ECHO is getting a light novel! It will be written by Akira (日日日) and drawn by Oguchi (おぐち). The current goal is for a 2016 Japan release, with a hope that there will eventually be an English translation and overseas release. Crusher-P is the first overseas producer to receive such an honor, and is (understandably) very excited about it. Check out their announcement post and the promotional website for the light novel. Congratulations Crusher-P!
On October 10th, suzumu announced that he was retiring from producing Vocaloid related works. He posted a blog stating his reasons, and this thread on VocaloidOtaku has a couple of different translations for it. While I am sad to see a favorite producer leave the scene, this sounds like the best move for him personally and I wish him all the best. Thank you for your music and for not giving up.
Vsinger and Aquatrax have announced more details regarding their upcoming mobile game Zyon (or Zion), including playable characters and two types of play modes. Visit this article on Vocaloid News Network for more information. A post on the game’s official Facebook page yesterday revealed that some Japanese producers are contributing works to the game. The developers have also stated that the Android version release date has been delayed to the end of the year to support localization efforts.
Jin (probably most well known for Kagerou Project) has announced via Twitter that he will appear in COUNTDOWN JAPAN 15/16, happening December 28th-31st.
There is currently a collaboration of Hatsune Miku and the mobile game Wiz Quiz RPG Witch and Black Cat. The event runs from October 30th to November 30th, and features two special songs by DECO*27 and MitchieM as well as 24 types of cards by famous illustrators like Tama and KEI. Via Weekly Famitsu we now know there will be over 300 modules for Project Diva X, and names for attributes that will help the player clear a new play mode have been revealed. See this post on MikuFan for more information.

Normally I wouldn’t post two songs with the same Vocaloid or the same producer back to back, but I saved this song to post on Halloween so here we are. Pinocchio-P wrote this piece for Family Mart’s Halloween promotion last year. It sounds so cute and innocent but then you realize it’s actually social commentary... Makes me wonder what FamiMart thought when they got the finished version.

The first things that stands out to me is that Pinocchio-P chose to write the title of this song using only hiragana. Perhaps it’s a tie in to the themes of the song, since it’s the most basic Japanese writing alphabet (and what you learn first as a kid). I love the use of colors and abstract combinations of everyday items, as if to say that the world feels common but won’t as soon as we look past all the pleasantries and pains of everyday life and expectations.
With over a million views on NND, this song has entered the Hall of Legend. It’s featured in both Project Mirai DX and Project Diva Arcade: Future Tone and includes modules for Miku based on the outfit the character wears in this PV.
