August shook his head immediately at the apology and the ‘official’ title. “I’m not a doctor yet, I’m only in my residency,” he reminded with a smile, shrugging. “Call me August,” he offered, friendly smile still there before he turned his attention back to his work. “Not exactly, but, I think of it as like a sort of homework. I’m learning to be a doctor, so, this is just schooling. I’m mainly just trying to figure out questions and such for when I go in tomorrow. So, it isn’t too much work…” he shrugged again, moving to grab the coffee that sat untouched. He’d need it. “And my only personal time is reading books. Might as well read something else that is somewhat more beneficial. Do it tonight, don’t have to do it tomorrow. I’ve had that work ethic my whole life.”

woojung shrugs. “residency is a doctor enough in my mind, you’re still helping people.” he pauses, before adding. “but if you’re more comfortable i can refer to you as hyung?” he figures they’re close enough in the office for the more casual formalities. “when you put it that way, it makes sense,” woojung agrees. it’s why he’s here, as well. homework, basically, things he needs to prep for the following week that he didn’t have time for during the work hours. “i’m glad it’s not too strenuous at least.” woojung lets out a small chuckle at august’s next words. he too spends most of his free time doing something relaxing and personal, like reading. it’s not much of a stress to change over from reading for entertainment to reading for work. “that’s a very sound work ethic. i’m sure in your career being able to balance work like and personal life well is going to be an asset.”

Venus was taking a small sitter, fiddling with the papers on the table that involved stuff pertaining to the cafe. Advertisement, pay, other stuff that he felt was okay to sit out in the actual area of the place. The line wasn’t long, so he didn’t feel the need to jump up and help, but he did keep an eye on the customers. He was the owner, after all, and despite his focuses, it was night, therefore, he worked. Just like his employees. His focus was interrupted whenever he heard someone speak, red eyes flickering up to the man who stood in front of him. A regular. He still didn’t know his name, though. “Sure, if you want me to leave the table too, I can,” he replied, shifting around some papers that had drifted over to the side he was not occupying, attempting to make some room for the person who would be joining him. “I’m Venus,” he offered as well, smiling, before his eyes turned back on the papers.

the man at the table looks so familiar. he must be an employee at the coffee shop, or the owner. from the way he’s casually sitting at the table makes woojung think he’s the latter. “you don’t need to leave,” woojung says quickly. “i really don’t mind sharing. my laptop doesn’t even take up that much space.” almost to prove it, he tugs out the device, setting it neatly in front of him. its an older thing, thick and dented. but it works just fine and is within woojung’s budget, so he’s a little attached to it. plus, it fits perfectly on his half of the shared table. “ah, i’m woojung. it’s nice to meet you venus-ssi. i feel like i see you around the cafe quite often, so it’s nice to finally introduce ourselves.” he smiles warmly, all gums and shuttered eyes.

Immortals. They are so fascinating to watch—too mimic. Sungmi has occupied a seat in the cafe for hours now. She simply observes the people as they come and go. Some are in a rush while some stay to play on their laptops. In front of her sat a triple chocolate cake slice and a cup of hot chocolate. For a vampire, she had a big sweet tooth. She munched slowly as her gaze was lost in the crowd. It wasn’t until a voice and a sweet aroma caught her attention. “Of course. I would love to have a tablemate!” Her eyes sparkled in glee. ‘Tablemate’ was a new phrase but it brought her excitement. “There’s not a lot of free tables in here so it would be rude of me not to share.” A smile tore her cheeks. ‘Cute human’, she thought. Maybe a new friend has arrived?

over the years, woojung has picked up a pretty accurate sixth sense when it comes to vampires. when it’s not obvious, especially in a context like this in a bright, warm cafe, he lets his gut instinct lead him. its not that he distrusts every vampire he comes across. its more about walking into a situation informed. being vulnerable, naive, its just an accident waiting to happen. and this woman, she makes woojung’s instincts whisper warnings. but she’s excited at his arrival, so pleased and pleasant. it makes his own lips tug into a friendly grin as he pulls out the chair across from her. “it wouldn’t be rude,” he assures. “you’re just extra kind to share your space with me when it’s not necessary.”

August’s eyes were trained on the computer screen in front of him, mulling over the notes he had from work. It wasn’t too important, but it was important enough for him to focus on it outside of the hospital hours he worked. He was trying. He was a resident psychiatrist, and he was trying so hard to learn so many things, but it was hard. Which, he had always known it would be, but experiencing now… well, he wished he had just tried to go do something simple. But he wanted to help people, so, so much, that he wouldn’t give up. His coffee sat untouched, his cake to the side as well, when he heard someone speak. He looked up immediately, a smile coming across his face. Woojung. A coworker, the receptionist. He was nice, and it was nice to see someone familiar. Plus, having someone to join him? Well, that was even better. He needed someone to talk to. “Sure, sure, I don’t mind. Sit,” he replied, nodding to the chair across from him.

it takes woojung a second to recognize exactly who he’s talking to. he’d been too frantic in a search for a table, mind to filled with work, the other’s face didn’t even register. but at the sound of the other’s voice, woojung looks from the empty chair to the person across from it and sputters. “dr. oxendine, i’m sorry,” he says as he dips into a polite bow. with flushed cheeks, woojung carefully slides into the empty space, placing his tea down on the table. “do you have things you need to work on as well?” he looks at the table, not noticing any sign of paperwork in front of the psychiatrist, but he finds none. “i hope you don’t. no one should have to bring their workload home after hours. your personal time should be your personal time.” its something woojung usually ascribes to. he’s spent so much of his youth working part-time jobs, he knows how easy it is to let yourself fall into the trappings of responsibility. but taking care of yourself is much more important than your career.

the commute from the clinic to his apartment isn’t a particularly daunting one. but woojung knows that as soon as he’s through his front door and changed into something more comfortable, his motivation will be shot for the night. and the beginning of the year means an influx of appointments and a shortage of staff due to circulating illnesses. woojung still has some shuffling to do with patient appointments to fit into the short-staffed schedule. so, with his laptop tucked into his messenger bag, woojung steps into win win cafe. it’s late, so he orders himself a green tea instead of his usual americano. for how late it is, the cafe is unusually busy. there isn’t a single open table, so woojung steadies himself with a breath before approaching a lone patron at one of the tables. “excuse me,” he begins, fingers tight around the strap of his bag and his takeout cup. “is it alright if i join you? i promise i’m a well-behaved tablemate.”
