It's Brian Time!

Whale, whale, whale... you're looking jawsome today! The name is Brian. I'm studying marine biology at Wittlich University in Beacon HIlls, California. I love sharks, surfing, and my friends.

It does sound like some sort of dessert, doesn’t it?  But I’m pretty sure it’s less sugary confectionery and more horrifying mythical creature.  Alas.

It looks like arachne are exactly what they sound like: giant spiders.  They’re shapeshifters who can take on a humanoid form, but typically still have double irises.  They spin webs to capture their prey, which is horrific.  But it also looks like they’re typically found in Greece.  I think we can safely cross these off of the list for now.  I also think if we start hearing stories about giant spider webs, it will be pretty clear what that is.  Hopefully, we don’t, though.  That sounds absolutely awful.

Anything about crocottas?

That... is terrifying. But also disappointing. Blue loves to catch spiders. All we would need is a giant cat and boom. Problem solved.

Crocottas are shapeshifters too. They look like wolf-dogs or human, depending on their form... oh. And they can shift to look like anyone... Extremely territorial... can mimic voices... I don’t like these things at all. 

It says they originated in Greece and Rome, but I also can’t find anything about how far they’ve traveled. It sounds like they can blend in fairly well, other than they eat humans.

Alphabetically, arachne, banshees, and crocottas.  I think we can cross banshees off the list, though; I don’t think they cause any harm.  I can start with arachne, and you can start with crocotta?

Sure. I’ll start with crocotta. It sounds like something delicious...

But it’s probably terrifying.

That’s not true, Brian.  You’re great at researching things like shark facts, what the tide will be like when we’re going surfing…you know a lot.  And when you’re interested in the topic, you always find good information.

What we need to do now is find out what this Peter Hale fellow might try to send after us next.  We have a list of supernatural creatures that exist according to Allison, Rory, and Rollin’s family– which is so much more extensive than I could have possibly imagined– so now, we can research which of them live in North America, or in this region.  We can also look up news stories for any incidents that sound like they might coincide with their typical behaviors.  Everything that happened in high school was reported in the news, the reports were just missing the supernatural element.  But maybe if we know what we are looking for, we can find something.  What do you say?

You  make it sound so much easier than it happens in my brain.

Surfs Up || Brian & Ivy

Ivy grinned and flashed the Shaka back at Brian before paddling after her own wave that came rolling up behind Brian’s.  It had an amazing curve, and she let one hand trail lightly against the water as she rode it.  Looking over for Brian, she laughed as he did when he climbed back onto his board.  Dropping back to her own, she paddled over to him, splashing at him lightly as she did.

“We probably should go help,” She agreed, glancing towards the shore.  She didn’t want to be back on dry land, but she also didn’t want to leave anyone to set up all by themselves.  “Let’s go set up, then maybe we can catch a few more before it gets dark,” She suggested.  “The bonfire sounds great!  Plus, we can always surf when the sun comes up, too.  Surfing at sunrise was one of her favorite things.

“Guess we can’t let them have all the fun.” He smirked. Brian paddled back towards shore, managing to catch a small wave he rode part way in on one knee. 

Looking back, the ocean had calmed with most of the waves small and breaking closer to shore. He was thrilled he and Ivy were at least able to catch a few waves before the ocean settled.  Once near shore, Brian hopped off the board and hoisted it under an arm before walking back with Ivy to camp.

As soon as the opportunity arose, Ivy paddled out to her own wave, moving fluidly to her feet and making sure to ride it in the direction opposite of Brian.  She dropped back down to her board as she finished, paddling back to Brian and laughing.  Smaller waves were lapping at the sides of her board as she did, and the slight splash of salt water was refreshing.

Ivy remembered how much she had struggled when she was first learning to surf.  She still wasn’t perfect, but that was what was so wonderful about surfing; the need to be perfect wasn’t there, as it was for so many other aspects of her life.  It wasn’t that it wasn’t challenging– it was– but the challenge was more fun and exciting than frustrating.  Surfing didn’t feel like something she had to win, it just felt like a chance to be free.

“I see another one,” She smiled at Brian as another large wave approached.

Brian turned his board to shore once more and paddled to catch the wave. As he did so, he looked over his shoulder to Ivy and flashed the Shaka as he stood to ride the wave. Taking advantage of the slower breaking wave, Brian maneuvered the board back up and over the crest of the wave before bringing it back down and continuing the ride. He laughed as he lost his balance toward the end of the ride and fell into the water. 

Brian climbed easily back on his surfboard and paddled back out.  The water had become flat and Brian brought his knees forward and sat on his feet to wait for the lull to end.

“When do you think we should set up the tent” He asked Ivy. It wasn’t as though he wanted to get out of the water. He would stay out here always if he could. “I heard Rory wanted to have a bonfire tonight too.”

Ivy smiled. “It was mostly hypothetical,” She said, laughing happily as she collected her own board from Brian and quickly got ready to hit the waves as well, paddling out alongside Brian.  It was a perfect day; it was the perfect weather to be not only at the beach, but also out on the water.  She had every intention of helping get things set up, too, but she couldn’t resist the waves, and knew Brian probably felt the same way.  The salty sea air was like the freshest breath she had taken in weeks.

“Same spot,” She called out in agreement to Brian as he paddled nearby.

Paddling out to their surf spot felt like it took forever and a split second all at once. They had missed a good group of waves, but the lull didn’t last long. Once the opportunity arose, Brian took off after a wave and after dropping, carved to the right, away from Ivy.

Surfing was the best feeling. It was challenging, yet it made him feel so free. After he finished riding the wave, he dropped back down on his board and paddled back to Ivy with a big smile on his face.

Ivy couldn’t keep the smile off of her face as they neared the beach.  The drive to the coast had taken quite a while, and with each passing mile, Ivy felt herself becoming both more relaxed and a great deal happier.  Although she knew the djinn was gone– and thank goodness for that– the memories of the events surrounding it’s existence still lingered.  The miles they put between themselves and Beacon Hills were more than just distance from the entire nightmare; they were also bringing them closer and closer to Ivy’s number one happy place…outside of the library, of course.

She practically leaped out of the car when they arrived, gazing out in the same awe she often did as she looked out onto the sea.  Turning to smile excitedly at Brian, she started to gather her hair up into a ponytail.  “What do you think?  Do you want to hit the waves?”  It was more a rhetorical question than anything else; she knew Brian loved the ocean as much as she did, and probably even moreso.

Brian enjoyed the drive to the beach almost as much as he loved the beach itself. The day was beautiful, which made riding with the windows down a must in his book. He parked the car once they got out of the beach with a smile on his face and started to unload the surfboards from the top of the car. 

“That shouldn’t even be a question.” He handed off Ivy’s surfboard and changed his t-shirt for a rash guard before retrieving his own board. Brian jogged down the beach with the shark art on the bottom of the board facing away from him. The sand gave way to the ocean water and Brian was on the board paddling out to sea before he knew it. “Same spot?” He shouted to Ivy who was paddling nearby.

What if you saw a shark while surfing with your cat?

That shouldn’t be a problem for me; we tend to run warm.  And besides, I’ve slept in some relatively uncomfortable conditions…then again, like I said, I don’t mind the comforts that come with a house, or a tent, either.

In that case, I think I’m safe here.  And if there is some other thing, I don’t know about it, either, but I do know that whatever it is, we can take it.

That is a good question... I don’t know.

We totally can. Safe and warm though - let’s try and stay with those.

Your enthusiasm is contagious!  And I definitely am!  I agree; this sounds like a very fun trip!

That isn’t weird at all; it’s normal to feel safe in an enclosed space.  In the woods, the trees or a cave can give the feeling of being in an enclosure, but the beach is wide open.  I can absolutely see the appeal of the tent.  And yes, they definitely keep bugs out.

True.  But as far as I know, none of them want to hurt me…unless you know something I don’t?

There is nothing I love more than surfing!  Except sharks... and cats.

Yea... and it gets a bit cold at night there too. The tents are warmer unless you are by the fire.

Not that I know of.

Unless there is some other thing I don’t know.

I might give the tent a try.  I think I’d like to.  Although the idea of sleeping on the beach sounds nice, too.

Sometimes it was, but then again, at the time, most things were dangerous for me.  Believe it or not, this is probably the safest I’ve been in years.

I hope you are ready for some serious surfing! It’s going to be so great!

I like the tent. It’s weird, but I feel too exposed out in the open. There are also a lot less bugs in the tent, which is nice.

Seriously? You’re surrounded by a bunch of other werewolves and witches. Not to mention the trained werewolf hunters.

I used to!  In the Gulf.  But it’s been a while…I think I might be a little rusty, but if you happen to have a spare board…

It is.  But it’s cheap, and in some cases in my life, it’s been safer.  Not that I’m opposed to the comforts of the indoors, either, but the woods became my home for a very long time, in one form or another.  Thought I don’t believe I ever slept on a sandy beach as a wolf…just in swamps on the bayou.

I have an extra longboard I can bring. And I know Natalie has a few she is bringing for anyone to use that wants to. So we definitely have you covered.

Well, I’m sure there is room in a tent for you, unless you’d rather sleep on the beach as a wolf. You probably won’t be the only one. Wasn’t sleeping in the bayou dangerous?

None other than the most awesome place ever.

There’s a great place called Perdita Beach. It’s probably got the best surf in the state. Plus, it isn’t too crowded, basically ever. We’re heading out there Wednesday.

I think I would prefer to share a tent!  I have always liked to be around other people, and being a werewolf kind of heightens that even more.  Plus, it would be fun to stay up and talk and everything in a tent– like a slumber party!

Oh, wow!  You traveled all around to camp!  That sounds really fun!  What was your favorite place that you went?

Well, yea. Just doing what you did with the djinn and getting caught on purpose? That’s tougher than anything I’ve ever heard about.

Colorado. We would camp and then head up closer to the mountains to go snowboarding and skiing for the day. It was always a lot of fun. Except that time Trevor broke his leg and we had to cut the vacation short.

Oh, dear.  I didn’t even think of that!  Should we each have our own tent?  Or do people usually share?  Maybe I can share a tent with Rory!  Well, I used to be scared of pretty much everything, but…that is not exactly an option anymore!  Where did you and your family used to go camping?  Did you go to the beach, too?

That sounds like a lot of fun!  I think we all need a weekend like that.

I think some people might. I’m sure if you would be comfortable in your own tent, nobody would be upset. Sharing might be better if you are nervous... although I think you’re tougher than almost anything we would find out camping.

Not so much the beach but we went to Colorado a few times. Mostly we went north to Oregon.
