Hurst Hemi-Under-Glass :::The Spirit of the Strip

Putting the Hemi in the middle--under the expansive backlight of the Plymouth Barracuda--seemed like a great idea, until the dragster went down the strip at a fourty-five degree angle...at all times. Making lemonade out of lemons, Hurst sold the undercarriage real estate to sponsors using the car as an exhibition racer, mesmerizing spectators from 1965 to 1975. Drag racing, excess, and advertising: A story that summarizes America.

Just imagine the scene at the drag strip: It looks just like your Dad's Barracuda...only with those racing stripes and decals, and the telltale staggered tire arrangement of a quarter-mile purebred. The cycling Hemi feels like its blowing rasberries into your ear drums, pricking up hairs along the back of your legs and tingling you somewhere at the base of your spine. Suddenly, the driver revs it and dumps the clutch--the Hurst jumps up on all four wheels momentarily, the rears connect with the tarmac and hook up--deforming the pliable rubber like black marshmallow and lifting the front of the machine skyward! Showering sparks, spitting flames from the four-barrel side exhaust, and painting two fat, black stripes behind it, the dragster barrels down the blacktop, screaming at the top of its lungs. What a spectacle!!
