I’m reading up on chocolate frog cards in the Harry Potter universe, for reasons, and-

“The stairs move! This doesn’t seem safe…I think I’ll put my common room in the basement, Rowena.”

“Ditto. I think the dungeons would be safer…”

“…My kids will brave these stairs. I’ll take the other tower.”

actually considering all this, the changing floorplan probably worked exactly as designed when it came to the battle of hogwarts in the late 90′s. the invasion was towards the end of the term, so the students, especially the renegade students in hiding, had the full term to master getting around the school quickly, quietly, and efficiently. the invading deatheaters were generally their parents’s ages, and hadn’t been back to hogwarts in several decades, if they’d even attended at all. so, while the adult invaders easily outmatched the adolescent defenders in strength and skill, hogwarts was a lethal maze to the deatheaters, while it was home to the kids.

People can’t seem to understand that abuse can be varying in degree and can come from loving parents that don’t see what they’re doing as abusive My mother was loving in many ways but in others she was verbally/emotionally abusive. This doesn’t mean we didn’t have good times or that I don’t love her but because of her toxicity we have a complicated relationship. Abuse is not black or white particularly when it comes to the emotional kind, and intent does not negate the damage it can cause.

Guidelines for Non-Borderlines

Situation: Your loved one with BPD tells you they’re upset

Do Not:

Ask them sarcastically if they “really” feel like that

Ask if they think [absurd exaggeration of the situation]

Get upset at them for being upset

Antagonize them (ie take the side of the person making them upset)

Dismiss, mock, or ignore their feelings or any cognitive dissonances they may have

Do:

Patiently listen as they explain the situation and their reaction.

Validate their feelings. eg: “Wow, that sounds very upsetting/stressful/synonym of an emotion they mention/etc.”

If you have a close enough relationship, very gently point out any contradictions with hard evidence. eg: “If he didn’t want to be your friend, he wouldn’t have asked you out for coffee.” Back off if this evidence is rejected; simply leave it ‘on the table.’

Be attentive of what your loved one needs. Someone to vent to, a shoulder to cry on, space, etc.

Give them time to recover.

Pay attention to the bolded word there; validation is the most important thing you can ever give someone with BPD. One of the main models for what causes BPD centers around growing up in an invalidating environment, where one’s needs, opinions, and even identity is ignored or dismissed.* The person with BPD then learns to constantly invalidate themselves; if you then invalidate them, it only feeds into the self-hatred and other destructive emotions that are common to BPD.

I would go ahead and say that validation is the key to most relationships, but it’s especially important to those with BPD.

Ok so many people may not know what this is about. After World War I in Germany the country was pretty much bankrupt and on top of that they were being forced by the allies to pay restitution for the war. In order to try to fix these problems the Weimar Republic which was the government that took over after the war decided to just print more money. Because of this the country faced hyperinflation which basically means that everything became majorly expensive and the money was pretty much worthless.
