How Kapangan Got Its Name
This is a story I have repeatedly heard from Lola about our hometown, Kapangan. It also is a story she's heard from her mother. Anyway, the story is set at the beautiful land of Kapangan.
An American man is wandering around the place when he noticed a smoke coming from a house. Intrigued, he went to look for what is causing this. As he came closer, he could see people of color who are talking, laughing and playing with each other. It seems as though they are having a party. People noticed him and gestured for to go inside the house. Shocked by their hospitality, he began to wonder what the place is called. "What do you call your place?" he asks but everyone's faces were confused. He repeats his question but still to no avail, no one could give an answer as they couldnot understand him. Meanwhile, a man is calling for his peers from a distance, "Kalajo, kayo pangan (Everyone. Come and eat.)" The man, then approached the American man and told him, "Ka Pangan (Go and eat)." The American was confused at first but then realization hit him, "Ah! Kapangan!" he exclaims. "Kapangan is this place's name!" After that day, he went around the country saying that it is indeed the place's name.
This story is what my Lola (and I) knows and believes whether it is fictional or factual.
