Siegfried Wischnewski as Hagen von Tronje in “Die Nibelungen” (1967)
Ironically, an actor with the first name Siegfried has created the most memorable embodiment of Hagen von Tronje in “Die Nibelungen”: an unforgettable fascinating character with an overwhelming charisma.
A grim giant from Burgundy, whose mere appearance terrifies the gentler souls. He is undaunted, ruthless and utterly convinced of the rightness of his actions. The indomitable warrior only once becomes staggering and wants to turn himself in to his enemies to save his king and his liegemen from a certain death but the king refuses to release Hagen from his oath.
Unforgettable when raises his sword in the semidarkness of a stormy night and threatens: “By this sword - I swear death to anyone who betrays my king!” Also memorable when he turns his bloodstained face to Kriemhild and shouts his last defiant words at her: “Now you got your revenge - three (dead) brothers for a bastard from Xanten!”
