tmtonks:
No matter how much has changed in Tedâs life, their ability to read people isnât part of it, and itâs clear as day that Remus has no desire to actually have a chat with them. Heâs staying because he feels like he has to. And maybe if this run in had happened ten years ago, they wouldâve graciously bowed out, left Remus to his own devices, letting that obvious discomfort fall away before it got any worse.
But it isnât ten years ago, and Ted isnât as concerned with anyone elseâs comfort or discomfort due to their presence anymore. Theyâre too curious to let a little thing like annoyance get in the way of the potential for some insight.
âNeither was I, honestly. All I cared about was divination, weed, and Andromeda, and we know how that went,â they say with a slight laugh, although there is a clear bitterness behind it. When they go on, the bitterness is gone, though, unable to stay when talking about Dora, even in an offhand manner. âTheyâre very trendy, you know. Into all the grunge, and all the muggle shite thatâs popular with young wix right now. So honestly Iâm probably looking in the wrong placeâŚâ
They glance around, as if only now realizing that they arenât exactly likely to find anything like that here, in a magical junk shop. Not that it really matters, anyway. Itâs not that hard for them to find something that Dora would like, given their similarities. But thatâs not really what this is about anymore, is it?
âHow have things been going, by the way? I feel like I havenât heard much coming from your department, but I guess that could be because of the Crouch situation.â
The mention of Andromeda causes a shift in the conversation Remus didnât quite see coming, and pushes him even further outside his comfort zone. Even after so many years heâd yet to really form an opinion on the matter surrounding Tonks and the Black sisters. At the time he was too wrapped up in his troubles surrounding Siriusâs imprisonment to care much for someone elseâs. Andromeda and him had been close once, back when he was so caught up in Sirius, that any one even remotely connected to the wix became someone he wanted to be connected with too. All of that seemed like a lifetime ago now.Â
Unsure of what exactly to say, he remains quiet, simply nodding along to whatever the wix had to say, hoping it would lead to the quickest route out of the conversation. Unfortunately his luck wouldnât quite run that way, when instead of deciding to cut their losses and head out, the wix instead brought up Crouch Jr. Remus canât help but feel like there may be some kind of test hidden in their words. So far heâd done his best to stay clear of anything having to do with the Crouch case- or pretty much any of the other numerous cases that had been coming through the Ministry as of late. It wasnât because he thought what Lily and Ted were doing was wrong exactly, he just found himself caring so little about it in the first place.Â
âWhich is probably a good thing,â he responds, and musters up a light chuckle. âUsually when you hear something coming from my department, itâs never anything good. I have run into some interesting old case files I might hit Alice up with later, but itâs nothing that you or the minister should worry about.âÂ
â...And how is the Crouch case going?â, he quickly adds, figuring if he didnât take the bait heâd look even more suspicious than he needed to be, âI usually miss a lot of whatâs going on upstairs down where Iâm at.âÂ
