As the outrage finally subsided, Don was starting to feel the insidious onset of his self-consciousness. He had practically exploded over being denied further service. How would that look to the common outsider? Another drunk, one of many lurking in New York, scrabbling for even a drop of rye.
Humiliation tinted his cheeks a deep red and he finally resigned, “Seltzer then.” He paused, trying to hide his shame as he glanced at the girl, and added, “Please.”
It was probably hard to tell since her facial expression barely changed this whole time, but Jackie was actually sort of pleased about this turn of events, and it carried in her voice. "Alright then! Gimme a minute to tell 'em, yeah?"
That said, she went to the bartender about getting him a seltzer. They didn't seem all too enthused about it, but they rarely seemed happy about the whole bartending thing in general, to be honest. But the drink was made, so she brought it over. Wasn't her job to do, but still.
The tension bubbling inside of him suddenly receded like a balloon whose string was slowly untied. But the thirst never faltered or waned. It was still there, burning in the back of his throat as if he had swallowed the sun itself.
"Right—fine." he muttered impatiently. "I just. Need a drink."
Well, that wasn't too bad.
There was still the problem of drinks, though. It didn't really feel right to try and get him another alcoholic drink, but he seemed to really need one, for lack of a better word. She couldn't really indulge his vices, could she? "Y'know... you're not s'posed t'have anymore o'those hard drinks, sir. Can I suggest water or a soda?"
"Why? My money’s as good as theirs, isn’t it? Why do I have to leave?!"
Couldn’t she tell? This was a matter of life or death! He couldn’t just up and leave! The next closest bar was ten city blocks away, and he surely couldn’t survive the trip there; the uproarious sea of people, too many of them, too many eyes watching and judging him like a grand jury. The cars too, their incessant, violent noise could kill him in this fragile, vulnerable state.
Jackie didn't feel like things were all that serious, but she changed her speaking pattern to try and calm him down. It was either this or raising her voice.
"Sir, I only said y'might have t'leave. Things'll be fine as long as y'stay calm, alright? Just be cool."
Probably wasn't right to use her powers in this situation, but it'd be easier than getting into an altercation. Maybe. She didn't feel like getting into one, at least, and talking him down shouldn't take much.
“Too much?! I’ve barely had a few drinks! This is ridiculous! Do I look drunk to you?”
And yes he did. The whiskey was strong on his breath and his mannerisms were somewhat slurred and rambunctious. Just a moment ago he had been in his chair, leaning back and languidly reciting lines from Hamlet for his own ears.
"I'm only sayin' what they told me, sir. If you keep this up y'might have t'leave."
More like she might have to make him leave. While that would probably be the highlight of her day, it was a bit risky with these older guys. What if she went too far and they got sued? Christ, what a hassle that would be.

Curiosity always got the better of Jackie, so she stepped closer to try and get the stranger's attention.
"I, uh... hope this ain't rude or anythin', but y'look kinda lost. Are y'new here or somethin'?"
Not the best way to greet a stranger, but maybe her quiet voice would go unnoticed! Part of her hoped she wasn't being a stereotypical New Yorker(as if she even sounded like one), while the rest wished she could rewind and do this over properly.

Being in charge of crowd control was kind of tedious, especially when you were as short as Jackie. As she tried to deal with the latest disturbance, she cranked up the southern politeness, trying not to show that her temper could be just as short. "I'm sorry sir, but they said you've had too much." Honestly, she didn't even want to be in this situation, but a paycheck was a paycheck.
Next time she'd get a job that didn't involve drunk people.
