phoebe's play seems like a parallel with holden's expulsion right before christmas break
the plot of the movie phoebe sees might refer to holden's wish to stop children from growing up (and retain their innocence and purity by association)

some of my favorite passages from the catcher in the rye <3
the catcher in the rye is such a beautiful book it deserves to be mandatory reading in so many schools worldwide i have been holden caulfield
i just feel very strongly about that book because it translated so many of the things ive felt and thought but couldn't define and its message is really valuable
did he actually say that. guys is this real.

holden caulfield might be the single most yumeshipped classic literature character of all time

Ivan Karamazov's convo with the devil but instead of that hipster tumblr sexyman professor woland's entire entourage appears. behemoth pisses on his books, azazello smokes a fat blunt with his manuscripts (because they dont burn anyway right), hella dusts off his stuff making it all fall and shatter to the ground and koroviev collects the pieces to create an ante litteram dadaist collage. woland sits on the couch laughing and ivan is even more conflicted cause something so chaotic could only be divine intervention
this is my niche
one of my favourite moments from the brothers karamazov is the subtle yet crucial parallel between dmitri's and ivan's conversation with alyosha concerning guilt and innocence. in both cases, it is demanded of alyosha to reveal his opinion on a critial topic - for mitya it's the question of whether alyosha believes in mitya's innocence, and in ivan's case it's the question of whether alyosha thinks ivan wanted their father dead.
both dmitri and ivan respond to alyosha's answer with a "Thank you!" though dmitry's gratitude is genuine - he is liberated by the knowledge that his little brother believes him, whereas ivan's "thank you" is a bitter one; it is in this moment that ivan is let down by alyosha, it is this response that marks a betrayal particularly hurtful for ivan because, by saying he did believe ivan meant what he said, alyosha in a way condemned ivan. ivan takes this answer from alyosha as a final confirmation that he, ivan, is indeed the guilty party in the murder of their father, and that not even his angel little brother is on his side, which is why he gives alyosha a cold shoulder from this point onward (earlier on in the book ivan explicitly begs alyosha not to think of him as a villain, and proclaims how he once believed that alyosha was the only one he had in this world). by admitting he found ivan's words to be reflective of his desire, aloysha unintendedly let ivan down.
p.s. we can also go on to discuss how unfair it is that alyosha is continuously stuck in that position because everybody knows they can trust only him to speak the truth and pass fair judgement. my sweet boy deserved a break. but anyway
movie rec for fans of the catcher in the rye: the 400 blows (1959) dir. françois truffaut
unlike holden who is afraid of growing up, antoine is overtaken by the desire to become an adult, to be an independent individual in the eyes of society. this stems from his wishes of being free from being a helpless child under his neglectful parents' roof and the limitations of the education system. thus, he behaves the way he thinks an adult would and frequently displays acts of rebellion. yet we are reminded of how young he truly is when we see his mother pat him dry with a towel after a bath or the several shots that show his small size compared to the tall buildings of the city. the movie does an excellent job at showing how marginalized and vulnerable children are.
