Summary: This is a Magic Treehouse AU. Yep, the children's books from the 90ies. Myka and Pete, who grew up in the same neighborhood traveled to fascinting places and times in history with the magic treehouse and fulfilled missions for it as kids. Now, they are adults and returned home for a few days. Myka just wants to escape her father's comments, Pete just wants to go back to the adventures days. And the treehouse magically re-appears. In it two books by Myka’s favorite author are laid out for them.
Hi, @beatricethecat2 ! Now, you know what my second ask was about. You said, you don’t know this series (and I especially only picked american/well known in us-american culture books, and stole expressions from my og american girlfriend, to disguise myself, and thought books from the 80ies/90ies/00s would be a good spectrum! anyway.), but I hope you still enjoy this story in the world of it. I hoped you know it, but I think its still fun.
I went to an AU from a kid’s series, and stuck with it after you said you don’t know it, because you said, you want something fluffy and non-explicit, and no body horror. Many things that are considered that, I see every day, so I lost the understanding of what other people tolerate, and wanted to be safe.
And you said you aren’t a reader of H.G. Wells’ novels, so here, I mention only the one Warehouse is referencing, too and a few letters of his.
Because: don’t we all love Myka gushing over H.G. Wells novels? That is what is happening here! Or, at least in this first chapter.
I am sorry, the updates will probably be slow. I am finishing this last minute and it’s not very polished. I am very, very sorry. I wish I had more time and more energy for fic. But unfortunately its still considered normal to constantly be at work in my work. If I had the time to make food, I might also have time for writing. Unfortunately I have neither, and felt very lucky to have today, the day of the posting, off, for once!
Anyway, I’ll stop rambling. I hope you have fun reading!
Here is a picture of me drinking tea while desperately trying to finish today the hemisphere of my brain that is awake:
(Yep, I read multiple treehouse books and each half of these two HG Wells books while commuting to prepare. In English even. Okay. Happy reading and good night, now)
Happy @b-and-w-holiday-gift-exchange, @apparitionism! I agree with 100% with everything you said in your reply prompt, - what a headf*ck it is thumbing through B&W's Tumblr golden years and scrubbing through the show. I hope what I came up with here satisfies at least a fraction of that desire to go back in time!
Imagine these two living together in the 1940s (somehow, somewhere? And they were roommates....) - these are the kind of portraits they might have in their home. Myka's is in a contemporary 40s portrait style while HG prefers something a more nostalgic (fitting for her, I thought?). I just love how how happy they seem! (for more, click on the "read more" below)
Where this came from: I've been researching some mystery family photos (actual negatives!) from around the late 20s-early-mid 1930s and that lead me to transporting these two back in time. And my grandparents had some frames similar to these.
Plus, since there's already a Myka set in the 40s (looking amazing in "Big Snag"), I just needed a character JM played that was vaguely 1940s-ish. And much to my amazement, I found one, in an episode of Poirot!
I was having so much fun that I put a few other split-screen-ish images together, because...why not.? These are more "whammied into the 1940s" rather than living in them. JM looked so HG-esque with the necklace grab and suspicious eye roll, I had to do something with those screen grabs. Thanks for giving me a reason to dust off my photoshop-for-tumblr skills!
Hi! It’s me again, the fellow Bering and Wells fan thinking about your reading preferences in order to write you something ;) So! In order to clock these a little more, since you seem to be very open about what I am to write and said you don’t to prompts, I thought I might ask you a few very specific literal questions and get a taste for your preferences that way? You can answer them in a yes/no manner if you want or tell me more if you have the time but don’t feel obligated for long answers.
Did you read 'A Series Of Unfortunate Events' by Lemony Snicket? As a child or as an adult?
Did you read 'The Magic Treehouse' (as a kid)?
Did you actually read any HG Wells? If so which and what did you think? (this is generally just a fun question in this fandom I think)
Did you read 'We Have Always Lived In The Castle' by Shirley Jackson?
Did you read 'The Magic Schoolbus' books as a kid?
Did you read 'Inkheart' by Cornelia Funke?
Did you read any Sarah Waters novels? Did you like them?
I hope this isn’t too much of a laundry list to answer and that these will give me a bit of an inside into the words that make your brain happy ;)) Also: Happy new year!!
Hello again! Happy New Year right back at 'cha! As an "old" here on this infernal machine, I have to admit I haven't read any of the kids/YA books you mentioned (all beyond my time - though I did see one of the Lemony Snicket movies with a niece a million years ago. Or, maybe it was one of the Narnia ones. Hmmm. What I do remember is I played a Stereolab album in the car on the way home and she said it was "weird," but in her defense she was probably a tween then. She's thirty-something now and, actually, she probably would still think it was weird). I also don't read much fiction (except when I'm on vacation, which is rarely), so I'm afraid no Shirley Jackson or H.G. Wells (shame on me). I have read a couple of Sarah Waters novels and I'd say "The Paying Guests" was my favorite, partially because of the pace of the story unfolding and the humor within the storytelling. I do like her writing in general but will say "The Night Watch" was hella depressing. The last fiction book I read and enjoyed was "The Candy House" by Jennifer Egan, the sequel to "A Visit form the Goon Squad." And I also liked those Ann Leckie books though it's been awhile since I've read them. Hope that all helps in some small way?
Hi! I drew your name for the Bering and Wells gift exchange! I’d like to write you something, is there something you enjoy reading in particular? I am definitely open for prompts, but if that’s overwhelming can also see if I can make up something by myself ;) Just be warned, if left to my own devices, my ideas run a little into the territory of weirdness and strange plots—but I can hold back if that’s not your cup of tea. I’m looking forward to hearing from you!
Hello friend! Thanks for the ask. I'm not one for prompts, so whatever you might have in mind is fine with me! I'm a fan of working within someone's strengths, so I'm ok with weird or strange plots but I will say I'm not a fan of body horror or explicit fics. It'd be great to keep it upbeat and fun as I feel like that's what I need more of these days (if that's ok with you). If you have any questions, feel free to send them along, but I trust your instincts. Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
Happy Bering & Wells-mas 2025 to all you nerdsbians out there!!
It's been a rollercoaster couple of years for me....so I'm very pleased to have a moment to (remember how to) post to Tumblr and whip up a little holiday cheer!
Happy Holidays nerdsbians! And an early Happy New Year, too!
I had a short story idea for this image a la the "Adventures of Bering & Wells" series (the one I was chipping away at a few years ago), but just didn't have the time or focus to flesh it out. So, for now, I hope it's enough just to see these two shuffling along in Midtown New York mid-conversation (or argument? Who knows..). I guess I should thank that W train that turned into a Q mid journey, forcing me to walk across 57th street to catch the bus home. I wouldn't have experienced any of the holiday decorations otherwise, and the snaps I took of this plaza gave me ideas.
