Ormosia coccinea also known as Huayruro has been an important part of Ecuadorian and South American culture for centuries. Huayruro seeds are found in pods in the tall trees of the rainforest. Though these red and black seeds are poisonous they are said to bring good fortune and to ward off negative energies. The mixture of black and red on the seeds is also said to bring balance.  The indigenous people of Ecuador  use Huayruro seeds to decorate and make bracelets, necklaces, crowns, skirts and many other things. Many artisans use Huayruro seeds to make modern jewelry. They make stunning huayruro necklaces, bracelets and earrings from clusters of Huayruro seeds that have been sealed into clear resin. This photo was taken in Nueva Rocafuerte at the home of a Kichwa in March of 2012.
