Hellenistic Gold Myrtle Wreath, 4th-3rd Century BC

Myrtle wreaths, which were common in many regions, especially of Macedonia and southern Italy, alluded to Aphrodite, Demeter and Persephone, goddesses of fertility and vegetation. The gold wreaths that imitate mainly wreaths of natural branches, leaves and blossoms from olive, myrtle and oak trees and ivy, have mainly come from royal tombs and constitute exceptional examples of the goldsmith’s art in the Hellenistic period. Hellenistic period. The Benaki Museum in Athens, Greece sells a very nice but pricey replica of this wreath.
