FYI...
A type designer designs typefaces. A typographer designs with typefaces. A letterer draws letterforms. A calligrapher writes letterforms.
Took my lettering to a wedding expo today, it was grand. I had no voice by the end because so many conversations! There was a lot of interest, and I'm hopefully gonna be super busy leading up to the upcoming wedding season, yay!!!
Reminiscing about our Indonesia adventure and full of love for this man, so I made a thing. My handlettering over my picture :) Aurora Handlettering
Learning a couple of words in Indonesian, and learning this most of all #language #smiles #universal #aurorahandlettering #lettering #indonesia #havelovewilltravel
Some Sunday Inspiration I doodled during church this morning :)
Lara! I love this blog, it's so inspiring.
Oh I should definitely check my messages more! Thanks Steph, I think YOU are super encouraging!
On the 26th of April 2014 two cool things happened. my friends got married, and I showcased my first proper function lettering.
I lettered 5 chalk boards with various purposes, all by hand, designed with motifs inspired by the tree image used on the invitations and stationery.
(These photos where taken by me. I’m looking forward to official photos ;) )
Aurora Handlettering - Don't Give Up
hey! quick question - how did you get into lettering? have you done any courses? xo
Oh hey! I haven’t had an ask here in ages, YAY!
I have always liked lots of arty crafty thing, I am moderately skilled with things like painting and drawing but I hate practice, and as much as I know you don’t NEED purpose to create, I get bored quickly with no direction or purpose. Which is why I was a bit flakey when it comes to producing art and stuff before. I studied visual arts in high school and did an elective art course in my last semester of my university degree. I mostly wish I could be amazingly talented at ALL the art and so I never know where to concentrate my efforts.
12 months ago I started working in a cafe. We have an a-frame board that we write on every week with different products or messages, and as the new girl, the other girls let me have a go, and while my first attempts were pretty dismal (with no preparation and a very short timeframe to produce the finished work) I decided that I loved doing it and decided to try and get better. I practiced heaps of font styles, bough a notebook and filled it with quotes and songs in all different styles, and just practiced and practiced. The girls at work could see improvement, and could see my desire to produce beautiful things, so my manager started giving me the info the day before so I could plan the design, and giving me more time in a quiet part of the day to make it beautiful.
And so every week I was creating something with a purpose, and people saw it, and a friend asked me hand letter her wedding invites, and I designed a few tattoos, and I’ve been finding project after project to keep me busy. I do a lot of little (and sometimes big!) things for work, and I keep trying to take any opportunity to learn more or practice a different style!
I try to be active in the lettering Instagram and reddit communities (but I’m really still quite nervous and shy about being all “here’s my stuff” so I mostly just lurk) and I learn STACKS from the amazing people on there, and I gather inspiration from Pinterest - I don’t let myself reproduce anything though - I might recreate a similar style with different quotes though, just for practice to create more variety in my skills :p I still have soooooo far to go! I’ve barely scratched the surface of digitalising my work properly!
Thanks so much for asking!
Are you looking at getting into it yourself?
Feeling like a fairy! Giant flower crown! #handmade #crafty #diy #pretty #girly #gpoy
I made a pretty thing! I'm unsure if I'm finished or not... Should I continue it thick all around? Maybe taper it off down the sides? Or is it good as it is?
THIS.
YES.

Making cute little signs to be framed and hung at work, of the core values of the business :) so much fun experimenting and pushing myself to try different styles… 3 more to go.
Dig these signs I did over the last two weeks :) almost for certain my favourite ones so far :)
