He replays the words silently wondering if he had heard them correctly. “I’m going to remind you how requests work.” Truthfully what surprises him is that he can’t quite pinpoint the specific emotion he was experiencing. It leans towards the emotional equivalent of a paper mache project. “You made a coherent request and provide cold hard cash, and I accept. How do you manage to fuck that up? There must be something very wrong with your brain”

“I’m not afraid of men,” he corrects becoming immediately defensive. That wasn’t the question, but he hasn’t given the actual one much thought. Back home the only guy that didn’t have a beer gut and was at least half as attractive as he was Gaston. Which for obvious reasons wasn’t a viable candidate nor was he even worth the consideration. “Why be with a man when there are women? 𝖍𝖊𝖗𝖈𝖛𝖑𝖈𝖘:

Hercules wasn’t one to back down, not even in their lowest point on when there was an obvious disadvantage on them, they always continued kicking and scratching until they wouldn’t be able to take it anymore. It had been odd to suddenly have Cain reaching to them, but when the idea of a contest between them was put on the table– Hercules knew they’d be doing it. 

Both of them stood by the entrance, Hercules was too eager to start, almost excited for the challenge. Like a little kid waiting for Christmas to arrive so they could open their presents. Blue eyes darting over to Cain, while his words were stained with that arrogance so particular of his, Hercules didn’t bat a lash. They’ve always had a sense of both admiration and dislike for him, but not in this moment. This, Hercules felt,  was their element.  

“Can I handle that?” Hercules repeated with a light tone, it was almost like Phil was talking to them. “I believe I do, can you handle it, Cain?”

Hercules’ immediate enthusiasm and evident competitive nature don’t even remotely surprise Cain. in fact he was counting on it. He knows most models come with the biggest egos and seeing that Cruella didn’t have a surplus of male models, it wasn’t difficult for Cain and Herc to get pitted against each other for biggest ego. Which honestly both would proudly proclaim. Strangely enough the competition eased Cain’s nerves. Although Herc’s demigod status didn’t mean much in Fabletown, Cain knew it wasn’t something he could even become which made him feel intimidated to say the least. 

In preparation, he goes through the list of items in his head a couple of times. He hopes that the intimidation goes both ways, but being the self proclaimed opportunist he is, Cain decided early on to give himself an advantage over the other by by taking the liberty of hiding two of the items. It was just a matter of remembering which section of the maze they were hidden in.   

Cain shoots him a look. “Don’t flatter yourself we’re not killing hydras - even if we were I’d be smart enough to not go for their heads. It’s no wonder Zeus didn’t come back for you,” the last part slips out before he can stop it. It’s times like this that he doesn’t believe he’s ‘forcing’ himself to embrace his dark side. Maybe it’s more natural than being good ever was. “I don’t agree to competitions I won’t win and there hasn’t been one yet. Ready?”

THE WOMAN WALKED with her hands tucked into the single pocket of her large hoodie. A denim jacket over top added an extra layer of warmth on the chilly night, yet still she shivered as she approached Cain. “Fuck you,” Marigold replied lazily, sporting a cocky grin. “Just because this is a cemetery doesn’t mean it’s haunted. I thought you would have learned by now that nothing in this town can scare me.” Nothing and nobody, she added smugly to herself. The attitude isn’t too unexpected from someone whose belief in fairytales and fantasy draws a sharp line at the supernatural. It was the living who made objects and places haunted, not the dead. 

As she glanced around, her confidence faltered. The disappearance of Red wasn’t quick to slip her mind and despite their odd friendship, (or perhaps because of it), she didn’t trust Cain. After a moment, her softening features hardened once more. “And you do realize how fucking weird it was for you to ask me to meet you here at night, right? It’s not that I’m scared or anything because I’m not ― I’m just saying that if you’re trying to test out a new date idea on me or some shit, this isn’t it.” 

Fear was is the single emotion Cain trusts. Not only does he believe it reveals the most about a person, it’s typically harder to fake. People’s responses to fear are what he’s most interested in and Marigold’s intrigued him the most. He knew her story and figured that anyone that could sleep soundly in the beds of the beast she robbed from was someone he shouldn’t mess with. That’s when the idea came to him. Beasts were mortal, but ghosts? How can you kill something that’s already dead?

Cain greets her with an eye roll. “Why? Is it because you can’t rob these guys since they’ve given all their belongings to loved ones?” He asks, raising an eyebrow. Most of it is driven by the bitterness of countless failed attempts of outsmarting the blonde, but he doesn’t need to admit that out loud. “Me? Taking you on a date? Ha! Unless you’re paying, it’s not likely.  We’re going to Fabletown’s most haunted buildings and I didn’t have many options to choose from.”
