Would love to hear your Angelique analysis if you've got any! It's nice to see her getting some love!
I genuinely have so much Angelique analysis, she’s a really complex character I think a lot of people overlook in favor of what the boys have going on. This is a little all over the place but it’s a start!
Angelique is absolutely ecstatic to be going to the island because she finally gets to meet her hero Dr. Morose, specifically Samantha Morose. On top of getting to meet her idol, Samantha ends up practically adopting her and they both see themselves in a mother-daughter relationship. But Angelique is hesitant to do the types of experiments Samantha does, Samantha quite literally describes her as “too soft” and has a conversation with her in an attempt to convince her to be riskier. This leads me to the lab accident. Angelique is very clearly doing research on immortal jellyfish and has managed to make her gel which she mentions multiple times is unstable. She puts it into detail that it will attempt to take over a host and that’s achieved through it getting into a mucous membrane. On the arm alone is fine, and she writes in her notes that’s her plan when she shows off her gel to Thomas. But Thomas is desperate for the regeneration to work on the entire body and demands that the volunteer needs to be fully submerged in the gel. Angelique knows it’s dangerous and she probably shouldn’t do it, but between Samantha’s advice and her fear of Thomas I think she ends up agreeing to try and prove herself. It backfires horribly, she ends up watching her coworkers die in an accident that could’ve been completely avoided and Thomas blames her for Samantha’s death even though Samantha was already dead at that point. He punishes Angelique for everything by having her locked into the lab with the spiders roaming around despite the fact it was all his fault in the first place. She was even expecting it too, she was terrified of what Thomas would do if he caught her and was ready to run before she was trapped. I think she wanted to give saving Samantha one last try and it ended up nearly killing her too. In my opinion her wanting to be better isn’t just her wanting to not kill her lab employees or creating a better environment for them as workers, I think it includes her remaining ethical and refusing to view others around her as things to get what she wants. She wants to better mankind but not at the cost of others because she’s seen herself how steep that cost can be. She was almost the payment.
