Taylor Swift is the Mr Beast of the music industry
I love how Pokémon Red (FireRed in the ref photo) casually made a reference to The Fly. You know, the R-rated sci-fi body horror about a man who accidentally combines himself with a fly in a teleportation accident.
I remember getting scared as a (young) kid at this (pretty sure it was a Rhydon in the OG), and then thinking it was kinda weird we mostly glossed over it in the game. Then I saw The Fly much later, and finally connected the dots when I played FireRed after that, and was like ohhh it was a reference that's why we didn't explore that further. Also wasn't the Bill in the anime just stuck in a costume?? It was like when they were adapting his character they said, "uh yeah, let's not do the horrifying teleporter bit."
Hi Becca!! I would like to know your thoughts on doing a playthrough of the game Blue Prince; it's a puzzle game that I would say is somewhat like Outer Wilds when it comes to the kinds of things you have to piece together. Basically your grandfather bequeathed you his mansion and you get to keep it if you can find the hidden 46th room of the 45-room mansion, but there are many other secrets to be found
I’ve actually played Blue Prince! And 100%ed it, I love the game. Sadly, my playthrough just wasn’t compelling enough to upload. :( I had a repeatedly weird order for discoveries and had some “ah ha” moments happen offline for realizing what was going on in the story itself. It’s not a knock on the game, it’s just not every playthrough I do is gonna be good enough to post for me personally.
That said I had a blast playing it, I love roguelikes and separately love the tabletop game, Betrayal at House on the Hill, so mechanically it combined like two of my favorite things!
One of the best storytelling choices in Project Hail Mary is that Grace is portrayed as a person who’s fully capable of making friends long before he meets Rocky. The story doesn’t go for the “friendless loner makes his first real connection” trope. Grace already *has* friends and forms meaningful relationships with people like Eva Stratt and Carl (in the movie) and the crew (in the book) on Earth. The flashbacks are just as dedicated to highlighting that as they are to explaining the astrophage research.
That’s what makes his relationship with Rocky hit harder. It’s special because Grace already understands friendship and connection, and despite that, doesn’t have a reason to sacrifice himself until he meets his alien rock buddy. That says so much more about how important Rocky is to him than if Grace had been written as a lonely dude whose first friend happened to be an alien.
it might seem like my whole life revolves around fictional characters but yes it does
Looks like I gotta prepare for some trouble
I'm rereading my notes (for that video essay I'm working on) and looks like we got the "sunny is imagining the OST" idea at the exact same point of the game.
Oooh! When you finish the video essay send it to me! I'd love to see it! This is one of my favorite theories about the game, especially given how heavily music weighs on the whole plot itself.
Omori is one of my favorite games I've worked on editing a let's play of because there's soooo much stuff in it that I catch in post, that flew by me when I didn't know... well... you know. I've never seen another game just work in as many visual metaphors as this one did, and then just HIDE THEM EVERYWHERE. Spoilers ahead! The most recent one was during the lake battle sequence, I caught something in it that I hadn't noticed when I first played the game.
Do you see it?
How about now?
Just in case you needed a little extra nudge. Beyond the fact that what I initially assumed was seaweed was actually likely HAIR, they've hidden a little hanging body right in the battle graphic! It's even still there in an earlier stage of the battle, but a tad more amorphous. BUT ALSO! In the earlier graphic, the body + seaweed/hair around it actually recreates the shape of SOMETHING's eye. It's so good! They really just crushed it with the visual hints/symbols in the game.
This game is just so darn good.
Whitespace’s/Omori’s theme is also heard in the Celestial CD! Is Whitespace’s theme secretly based off of something to do with the Captain SpaceBoy comics/games… or is that just a hallucinated part? It’s everywhere. Phobia themes. Place By A Lake. Blackspace (distorted, but the rough leitmotif is there). Space Road 1979. Not-So-Empty-House. It’s certainly food for thought! I love how he’s not entirely a reliable narrator (early-game for the most part). We don’t know what’s real and what’s not. Just like him.
I LOVE THIS THOUGHT!! It also fits the sort of humor the game has that amongst all of the seriousness… Sunny’s undying fandom love of Captain Spaceboy would still shine through.
Is the music that we hear in Faraway Town in Omori actually diegetic music that Sunny himself is imagining? Diegetic sound in film/games basically means sounds that are actually happening in that world vs non-diegetic being a backing track only the audience perceives. The reason I think music like, “Finding Shapes in the Clouds” is diegetic is that it ONLY plays each day after Sunny settles into wandering around the town. On 3 days left you don’t hear it until after you go to Hobbeez vs on 2 days left it plays immediately after you finish the initial conversation with Kel. It’s not just sound that plays anytime you’re *not* in a cutscene, it starts at pretty specific times.
Obviously there’s no way to prove this but I think it’s interesting to think that Sunny is also imagining a soundtrack to his own life as he runs around? And that in Faraway Town he specifically imagines a happy upbeat sound as he adventures with his friends in real life again. 🥺
That also makes me wonder if ALL the music we hear (that doesn’t have an obvious source in the game world) is stuff Sunny himself is imagining. Which would be why things like the real life Captain Spaceboy game music is what is used in the Otherworld fights (remixed but still). Sunny is just vaguely remembering actual music he’s heard and reimagining it into his own world, like how he has already done with many of the characters like Sweetheart and Captain Spaceboy. There’s a load of other examples of this too that makes me think it might be the case.
ANIMATED BLOODBORNE MOVIE WITH JACKSEPTICEYE AT THE HELM??? AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
See you in space, cowboy
On the Nasa livestream of the Artemis mission, one of the astronauts just pointed out that they can see the moon out one window and the earth out another and the scale difference is crazy. Mission control replied: "Amaze, amaze, amaze."
Otherworld from Omori in 2.5D With a cover of Lost, Then Found! by me :D
if you want me to consume a new media you MUST catch me at the exact moment when the stars are aligned and the air pressure is equal to the current degree of the sun’s peak against the horizon and all the cosmic energies are perfectly unified (aka my old interest is fading out) or i will nod and say “im adding that to my list!” Knowing theres no chance i will check it out
“unless its a book!” “unless you tell me it has gay people in it!” “this but only for live action shows” “theres a good chance i’ll get to it eventually” no wrong this post is not for you this post is ONLY for bitches who could have a treasured friend recommend them something that sounds grown in a lab to be your personal catnip and, with no choice in the matter, immediately know it will never be the right time to watch/read/listen to it
This is me, except if anything, the act of recommending something to me makes me less likely to ever check it out. Like I’ll check it out three years from now when the feeling of it being recommended has gone away.
