Cassils pouring the last bronze mold.
Stills from Katie’s performance (hammering names of transgender people who have committed suicide or passed away from acts of violence), and an example of one of the finished ingots.
The museum tag of “Resilience of the 20%” in PafA!
At our last class, and as part of Katie and Taylor’s pour performance, the last name “Sarah Kench” was chiseled onto a bar of bronze and hidden at Green Lakes as tribute.
Cassils performing “Becoming an Image” at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts on December 2, 2016.
At some point after each pour each cast was coated in a ceramic silicate shell that had to be chiseled off. Each chunk of bronze had to be “cleaned” this way, the silicate chiseled off. Excess bronze sanded down with a grinder, and the airs and bronze feeding pathways cut off as well. There is not a lot of documentation of this because the class was so busy grinding and cleaning, these 14 hour days of pretty physical labor to the get the bronze pieces ready for welding.
Power-washing with Cassils is always fun.
