The new strokes album was... honestly a lot better than I thought it was going to be (for the 2.7 strokes listeners who follow me on here)
It has a different vibe than any of their previous albums, it's less about simple, catchy accessible hooks (which is what made them stand out in the first place) and more about atmosphere, not to say that either of those is better than the other, just different. Maybe weird comparison but it almost feels like listening to one of Radiohead's albums, not that they particularly sound like Radiohead, but in the sense that the music has this sort of subtle eerie/melancholy feeling to it that draws you in.
Part of why I was reluctant in the first place was I was pretty ambivalent about the (only?) single they released for it, Going Shopping. Which, first of all, I SWEAR the version I heard had way more autotune/vocal effects than the version on the album? The whole album was produced by Rick Reuben, who also did The New Abnormal where he famously prevented Julian from completely garbling his vocals and I swear to god until I'm proven otherwise, Reuben is probably also the reason this album works. I like the album version of Going Shopping a lot more (seriously, they ARE different right? I'm not hallucinating???), but it still isn't my favorite, it's got a nice beat but is pretty mid-tier Strokes song to me. Like a sliiiiiightly better version of Bad Decisions, from TNA. Definitely old-school Strokey but missing a little bit of spice. Personally, I would've picked Lonely in the Future as their single, but listening to the entire thing front to back, I see why they picked this one, and why they didn't have a lot of other options.
It's a very..... album-y album compared to other Strokes projects. Like, most of their albums do have a nice flow to them, but the songs are just as good as standalones. This one almost feels more like Julian's side project album Tyranny, in that there are a few songs that are good on their own, but most of them benefit sooooo much from the way they flow from one another. Each song on its own is less like an episode of a TV series, and more like a clip from a longer movie, if that makes sense. Which I think is neat! If I didn't see the artist name, I would've considered it a solid Voidz album.
Re: the autotune, again, Reuben has got to be the MVP here. Or maybe the other Strokes, idk. It's pretty subtle for a lot of the album. The main place where it actively weakens the song is probably in Falling Out of Love, which is a bummer because I really like the lyrics (well, the ones I can understand) and I actually loooooove the outro, the last 45 seconds or so, where the garbled vocal effects really work as the song goes kind of off tune and falls apart. But, well, still, a million times better than how out of place the vocal effects sound in a lot of recent Voidz songs.
At the moment, the stand out songs for me... I think Dine n'Dash and Lonely in the future are both really strong. Liar's remorse is definitely interesting, I have to sit on it before I decide if it's going to stick, but I like the lyrics a lot, and the opening is really strong, I love how it flows from the previous song in the album. I would love to hear singer-songwriter Elliot Smith cover this one, but sadly he's been dead for over twenty years. Fruits of Conquest is cool, I really really like Tyrants of the Mellow Moon. (Killers of the Flower Moon reference?) The strokes never miss with their album closers I stg. Speaking of radiohead, the intro of Mellow Moon is very 'Karma Police,' it has a cool texture I think, I like how the acoustic guitar fades in.
Anyways giving number grades to albums is against my religion.... so I won't. Thanks for reading!

He's a trans man, yes, his kids aren't his biologically. He's just at a point in his life where he's physically transitioned to a point where resembles society's idea of a cis man, he's happy where he's at, it affects him in less of a big "coming out" way and more in terms of his private life, romantic relationship, family, reproductive choices. Which happens to some trans people in real life. While other trans people in real life might not be interested in that path at all. Both are cool.
Ig depicting characters who are lesser-seen minorities comes with some pressure to represent an entire group, rather than a unique individual. You might share a rarely-seen label with a character and get excited, but find you two have nothing in common. Or you might be a cis man or a woman or something else and find you have a lot in common. But intentionally writing a character to be a mascot for the entirety of ANY demographic will inevitably fail, and end up a really bland cardboard cutout while they're at it.
Ultimately, if I ever made it more of a focus, I'd think a strong personality comes before an identity label. How someone with a particular personality, background, or set of values deals with an experience and the joys or challenges that come with it is what makes them interesting, not the label itself. Then, in a meta sense, it's easier to be open to feedback and fix little details than it is to rewrite an entire character who was conceived as a (well-intended) stereotype.

The one thing that scares me about the backrooms (2026) (in a meta sense, not a scary movie sense) is that horror movies right now seem to be one of the few genres where big budget films get to explore original-ish ideas and escape being a piece of a franchise, and it seems like they want to expand the Backrooms world, and I just really really don't want that to happen and inspire A24 to create a greater cinematic spookiverse
