Chapter 2
The person was so focused on their phone, they hadnât realized Cleo had sat next to them.
âHeyâ, started Cleo. They startled and looked up at Cleo. Their eyes had a really pretty green color that shone behind a pair of round, sleek glasses and framed by some light brown, long curly hair framed them well. It was something Cleo noticed right away.
The person returned her greeting with a voice that sounded soft and refined: âHello.â
âIâm Cleo, She, Herâ, Cleo introduced herself and pointed to one of the pins on her jacket, which displayed her pronouns.Â
âAn- April, ehm, She, Herâ, the girl introduced herself with a slight stutter.
âNice to meet you!â Cleo extended her right hand towards April, who shook it and returned âlikewiseâ, with a slight hint of skepticism.
âYou were just in there right?â, Cleo asked and gestured towards the door of the Endocrinologists office with her head, âI saw you at the reception, you seemed pretty upset. Did something happen?â.
April processed the words for a second but answered: âNo.., well yeah, my appointment⊠my train was late and I missed it.â
âOh, yeah, the trains around here are a nightmare. Was it important?â, Cleo conversed.
April hesitated and Cleo interjected: âOh, Iâm sorry, thatâs none of my business, you just met meâ.
âIt's ⊠ok.â, April answered. She seemed to debate something in her head, when her eyes caught a sew on patch on Cleoâs jacket, right below the pronoun pin, it had blue, pink and white stripes.
âThe doctor was supposed to prescribe me H.R.T. Iâve waited for so long.â, April confessed and lamented.
Cleo made an understanding expression.
âSo youâre from out of town, ever been to Dainswell?â, Cleo asked.
âNo, first time. Never had a reason to really.â, April denied.
âSo youâre heading back home already?â, Cleo asked with a hint of disappointment.
âI guess, got nothing else to do.â April answered bluntly.
âSoo, also no other commitments?â, Cleo asked inquisitively.
âNo, not really.â
âSweet, wanna get like a coffee or something?â
âHuh? For real?â, April seemed surprised.
âYeah for real, dummy!â, Cleo assured.
âEhm, ok. Sure, sounds fun.â April got up and swung her tote bag over her shoulder.
âAwesome!â, Cleo celebrated, which made April giggle a bit.
The two went down the stairs and exited the building. On the sidewalk Cleo stopped, oriented herself for a moment and then decided to head left towards a Coffee shop she liked.

April followed the girl she just met one step behind.
She mustered her while they walked somewhere, presumably a cafe.
Cleo was wearing some dark green Cargo pants, a sweater, striped with fall colors, something April could have found in her Grandpa's closet, and a black denim jacket studded with pins, d.i.y embroideries, and patches. April would have associated all of that as someone a guy would wear. She herself wouldnât dare, itâs just not feminine, she would feel awful all the time. But somehow on Cleo it was just so natural, and somehow uniquely feminine paired with her shoulder long blonde hair colored with a pink gradient towards the bottom.
April had no trouble keeping up as Cleo walked confidently along the sidewalk.
They didnât talk on the way, keeping to their thoughts, but it wasnât a long walk anyway.
When they had arrived at the coffee shop, Cleo turned to April and said: âHere we are. Iâm not really a coffee gal but they make a really nice coco so I come here sometimes with friends.â Cleo smiled and at April who smiled back and went to head inside.
It was late autumn so outside seating was not available, which made the inside a bit cramped. But after ordering at the counter, Cleo a hot coco and April a black coffee, they found a nice spot in the corner with a view out the window.
April shed her black coat revealing a simple grey sweater with a knit yellow shawl around her neck. Since she hadnât yet developed any breasts she wore a padded bra to pass. After a bit of an awkward moment where nobody talked Cleo tried to break the silence:
âSoâŠâ but April had the same idea: âSorry, âŠâ.
The two broke out in quiet laughter at the situation.
âWhatâ you sorry for?â, Cleo asked half jokingly.
âI donât know. Iâve never done thisâ, April answered.
âDone what? Drink a coffee?â
âNo, I meanâŠâ April hesitated.
âLook, no pressure.âCleo interjected, knowing what April meant.
âSorryâ, April apologised again.
âYouâre pretty.â
That surprised April, she never got called pretty. Not even something similar when she was still someone else.
Cleo could feel it and chuckled.
âItâs true.â
âYou ⊠really think so?â, April asked, revealing her insecurity.
âYeah, I really like your eyes, they are such a pretty green color.â Cleo confessed with a smile.
âTha⊠Thank youâ, was all April could say.
âSorry if Iâm forward.â, Cleo tried apologising, âI talk a lot to cover my own thoughts.â
Cleo gave a slightly pained chuckle.
April finally caught her own thoughts.
âItâs fine. I just donât go out often, is the thing. People scare me. Well, what people might think of me scares me more.â, April confessed.
âWow, already such deep stuff.â, April realised herself.
Cleo chuckled. A cute chuckle, the muscles around the eyes raised, indicating it being genuine. April over analysed the situation, something she always seemed to do.
When the barista brought their drinks they started getting in the rhythm of conversation. They talked more about the âdeep stuff â, getting to know each other on a level April hadnât known for a long time.
Other topics included Cars, or rather their mutual disdain for carcentric infrastructure, Cleoâs guilty pleasure of Raw cookie dough and Aprilâs Tumblr account she refused to share with Cleo before cleansing it of the cringe self insert fanfictions she wrote a while ago, something Cleo unsuccessfully begged to read.
At some point the coffee shop closed for the day and the barisat, the same one that brought their drinks, had to politely ask them to leave as the two girls hadn't noticed the time passing. April insisted on paying for their drinks and the two left.
âItâs gotten really dark out.â Cleo stated after stepping onto the sidewalk.
âYeah, itâs already 6 pm.â April said after looking at a clock hanging in front of a nearby shop. âDamnâ, Cleo acknowledged.
âWe could grab a bite and continue talking about that nasty hag of a neighbor you mentioned.", Cleo suggested, eager to spend more time with April.
âHm, Sure. Yes to the food, no to the neighbor, I want to forget her.â, April answered.
âAwesome!â, Cleo celebrated the same way she had done earlier when asking April for coffee, which made April giggle.
âOk, I should probably call my dad, otherwise he might start a search party for meâ, April realized.
âYou do that, Iâll find a place to eat. Are You Vegan?â Cleo asked.
âVegitarian.â
âOk, Iâll find something.â
While April stepped aside to call her dad and inform him, Cleo opened her Phone and looked for a place to eat.
âFuuuckâ. April suddenly exclaimed and went a bit pale as she peeked at her phone for the first time in the four hours they had spent together. âWhat is it, April?â Cleo asked worriedly. April began frantically tapping on her phone, looking more and more panicked. âApril?â Cleo repeated.
April sighed, looked at April and finally answered: âMy train is cancelled. They closed the line for today. There was an accident on the track.â âOh damn.â, was all Cleo could answer.
âYeah. I mean, I hope everyone is ok but how the fuck am I supposed to get home tonight now.âÂ
âMy place isnât far.â Cleo said as a matter of fact.
âWell good for youâŠâ April remarked, not picking up what Cleo was putting down.
âMy bed is pretty big.â Cleo began. April looked at her and cocked her head a bit.
âYou could meet Obi.â
âAre you sure?â, April asked genuinely.
âOf course, I wouldnât mind getting to spend more time with youâ Cleo reassured her with a smirk.
April answered, now with a slight hint of silly malice in her voice âYou only met me today. For all you know I could murder you and take Obi with me.â
âOh, Obi wouldnât leave my side. I'm his established food provider, you know.â Cleo said jokingly.
âI mean if you really donât mind, it would be lifesaving if I could crash on your couch.â April accepted the offer.
âLovelyâ Cleo reassured her again.
Since it was now late and dark out, April couldnât recognise the city she arrived in earlier today. She lived only 40 minutes by train from Dainswell but had never visited it before today. They started their way to Cleoâs apartment, Cleo leading the way by a few steps. Down the road from the train station, and through some more small streets and through Dainswell park.
April had come to Dainswell for a doctor's appointment with an Endocrinologist today to finally get started on hormones. Unfortunately the train had had massive delays that day, typical for her rural area, and she had arrived way past her appointment and couldnât be seen. Defeated, after having been given a new appointment the next week, she had sat down on the stairway and was about to look for return train connections when someone sat next to her.
