i sort of just assume that the show was based around the 1980′s, at least for technology sake. i know mchale has stated that it’s all a time era on it’s own (x) but since he focuses on the 80′s - early 90′s a lot in terms of music, etc. i’ll be taking off from the 80′s to explain how sara interacts with technology, based primarily on the comics.
in short, i don’t think she’s really interested it like wirt is. wirt makes mix tapes, something common for the era but still pretty techy if you’re not really into it, and fiddles with train sets. but we never see sara interacting with technology. in fact, the technology for the era doesn’t seem to align much with sara’s personality. for example, the fact that she doesn’t have a cassette player could point to her preferring the older and more unpredictable radios instead of getting all fancy with one of her pastimes.
in fact, i’m ready to argue that sara is the more outdoorsy / prefers simpler technology sorts. she seems to have her survival skills down in the comics, being sufficiently packed. nor does she obsess over finding society like wirt does. sara is fine with roughing it, she’s probably even used to it. but this doesn’t mean she’s cut off completely, of course. based on her halloween costume, she loves watching horror stories. she probably even has a collection of horror vhs tapes just so she can rewatch them and get ideas. in essence, sara will learn the technology when it’s more commonplace and interesting to her.
modern times are different, though. even as the outdoorsy type, sara seems like the type to make good use of the internet and smart phones. sara may not have the niche interests like wirt, but that doesn’t mean she has no potential for understanding and keeping up with technology. she could probably fit in very well right now and take a lot of interest in what we have. using smartphones to stay in constant touch with the world and what’s going on, playing video games like super mario, and sharing her own ideas for horror stories online all seem pretty in character with sara. she’s social and obviously does want to connect with others and she would utilize technology to accomplish this. she’s pretty chill and has other interests like camping but modern technology can help her easily stay up to date while doing other things + be a way to be into technology without being into it.
bonus: sara’s tumblr would be a mix of things. up-to-date memes, photos from her camping trips, reblogs of wirt’s poetry to be nice, her own posts with updates on how her life is going & inside jokes. + lots of resource posts & horror movie posts.
--- she’s the type to immediately set her phone down if someone IRL is talking to her instead of signalling them to wait unless it’s really important.
