I’ve been wondering where the influx of notifications and patrons is coming from since I’ve barely been drawing lately. Frustrating how unsearchable the internet is these days tbh. Do you have any pointers on how to feel more confident drawing anatomy without as much need for a reference? I feel weird that I have to rely so much on my references to get decent bodies. I also really struggle to do faces, hair, heads, anything above the neck really lol

Oh yeah for sure, think Life Drawing is exactly what you need. I specifically mean drawing nude models in-person rather than photos. There is something about using your actual eyes to look at a 3D form which is a radically greater learning experience than studying photos, where the camera lens and frame have already made a lot of decisions without you realising.

For a few years I was going every week to a cheap life drawing class a local uni ran, and my ability to draw without reference grew so much and so fast as well. I suggest go to life drawing, use cheap paper and pencil of charcoal, and draw with the feeling of the actual drawings being disposable, they don’t matter, the value happens between ur eye and your hand and it’s hard to explain just how useful it it.

And if u can’t find life drawing sessions or they’re too expensive, gesture drawing on the bus, or in a park, or other public places is very useful too. Trying to capture aspects of ppl in motion is a great exercise, and I’m realising it’s been a while since I did that, damn
