“I just wish my fiancee could be here,” he said.
“Why couldn’t she be?”
“She didn’t wanna travel while she was pregnant,” he said.
“Oh… I hope you get to bring both of them here soon. I haven’t met her yet.”
“You haven’t met Eska?” he asked. “I thought everyone had.”
“No, I was with my mother when you brought her here.”
“Mmm… Everyone looks like they’re having fun.”
“I just wish my fiancee could be here,” he said.
“Why couldn’t she be?”
“She didn’t wanna travel while she was pregnant,” he said.
“Oh... I hope you get to bring both of them here soon. I haven’t met her yet.”
"Daddy, does Su... not like me?" The five year old had been sitting quietly on the floor next to her father, watching him work. This was the first time she'd spoken in about ten minutes.
“Of course she does, sweetie.”
“Honey, she doesn’t even know your mom that well. She couldn’t hate her.”
“Then… I don’t understand.”
“Don’t understand what?”
“Why she looks sad when she sees me.”
“You’ll understand when you get bigger.”
Xiaoli huffed and stubbornly crossed her arms. “Everyone always says that.”
"B-Badir? Can I, um, talk to you?"
Badir looked up from her paper work to see Xiaoli standing in the door way of her study, with a small wave or her hand she gestured for the girl to enter the room. “I’m able to speak yes, what is it you need Xiaoli?” she said in a neutral tone as she focused back down at the paper work scattered on her desk.
“U-um…” Xiaoli nervously entered the study and stood awkwardly in front of Badir’s desk. She didn’t come in here very often - honestly, her father’s wife rather intimidated her. “I… I heard that father was going to be visiting Omashu soon,” she began. “I want to go with him. I’ve never left Zaofu in my life, but… he turned me down. I-Is there anyway you could… talk to him? Convince him?” Her half siblings got to go with him all the time, unless he was going to Ba Sing Se, but more often than not Xiaoli was too ill to go with them. Now that she felt stronger, she thought it was unfair to be told to stay home.
Badir put down her pen looking back up to the young girl who stood in front of her desk. “Did my husband tell you why he feels you shouldn’t go?” she asked calmly, it was a bit unfair for her kids to be the only ones to go on trips with their father but her kids were both their offspring and they needed to be with him to learn about their empire… none the less Xiaoli had the right to go on a few trips too.
Xiaoli shook her head. “No... But he probably thinks I’m too sick to go. I’m not.” As long as they had a doctor on hand, and she brought her medication with her, Xiaoli didn’t see why she couldn’t travel. Even her mother thought it would alright this time. Xiaoli had no need to learn about the Empire, not being in line for the throne, but that didn’t mean she wanted to spend her entire life in Zaofu.
“Mmm… Everyone looks like they’re having fun.”

Huan sipped at his punch. “Looks like it,” he said.

“Hey, look at that!” He smiled, picking her up and setting her down to sit on his desk before examining the jewelry carefully, “Wow, that’s really good.”
“What do you think I should do with it?” She had thought about keeping it, but she had so much jewellery already. In a city of metalbenders, the stuff was far too easy to come by. “Mommy says I could give it to someone, but I don’t know who would like it.”
“Well, that is a tough one, isn’t it?” He rubbed his beard, “I’m afraid I don’t know sweetie. Opal would love it, and Su…”
“Do you… really think Su would like it?” Xiaoli lived kind of in awe of her father’s wife. She was so strong and beautiful, and an amazing bender. Xiaoli felt completely unworthy to share the same family name as her.
“I know she would.” Baatar nodded with a smile, “Why don’t you go find her and ask?”
She thought about that for a second before nodding. “Okay...! Do you know where she is now?”

“I just thought I might… get in the way of your work.”
“Wouldn’t be the first time,” he teased.
Xiaoli missed the joke and stared down at her feet. “S-sorry… I-I’ll try really hard to stay out of your way.”
He laughed. “I was kidding,” he said. “You’re never in my way.”
“Oh! O-okay!” Xiaoli brightened up immediately. “I’ll definitely ask my mother to let me come see you then.”
"Please don't go."
