Dreams
"Oh, my life is changin' every day in every possible way"
that hydrate post made me think about if cassie realised youâd not had anything to drink the entire shift and were starting to look pale
bonus points for it being before youâre even together, she just notices everything about you
pre-relationship
youâd been on your feet for six hours straight, constantly hopping from patient to patient, helping out with traumas in between. this morning was hectic, so you havenât had anything to eat today. youâve been running on coffee and adrenaline.
however, your activity level and food + hydration choices are catching up to you. after discharging a patient, you head to the nursesâ station to pick up another. dana spots you coming over and notices you look pale and sweaty.
âhey, kid. you okay?â the charge nurse asks you, looking your way through the glasses perched on the tip of her nose.
âiâm fine.â
âyouâre lookinâ kinda pale, sweetheart.â
âi didnât get the best sleep last night,â you tell dana. technically, itâs not a lie.
âyou should sit down for a minute.â
âi told you, iâm fine.â
then another voice chimes in.
âyou should sit down.â
you whip your head to the direction of the voice. itâs cassie. your work crush.
âmckay, i have to pick up another patient.â
ignoring your protests, she wheels over a stool up to your side. âsit,â cassie commands. ânow.â
you look at her for a moment before giving in. your feet instantly feel relief and your back can better relax not that youâre sitting.
âwhat have you had to eat today?â
âcoffee,â you reply flatly, giving cassie a joking glare.
but sheâs dead serious.
âiâm going to get you a sandwich.â
âoh my god, youâre being dramatic,â you tell cassie, the lack of food making you more snippy than usual.
âsit the fuck down and donât get up,â cassie grits out, her words harsh but coming from a place of concern. if sheâs not firm, youâll just ignore her.
still sitting, cassie walks away to fetch you food. danaâs smiling to herself, holding back a laugh as she pretends to busy herself in paperwork. you notice though.
âwhat?â you ask dana, clearly annoyed.
âyouâre stubborn.â
âyouâre starting to annoy me as much as mckay is.â
âhm,â dana hums. âi think both of you kids are damn stubborn.â
established relationship
cassie has always been a protective and caring personâitâs in her nature. when you guys started dating, her protectiveness over you only grew stronger. you donât like relying on others for help, and while cassie respects that (sheâs the the same way), she also knows that everyone needs help from time to time.
it was nearing the end of your shift, and you were ready to collapse on your bed. night shift needed someone to cover for them, so you decided to help out by working a double today. you only have to push through for one more hour. one more long hour. then itâs sleep city.
as you round the nursesâ station, needing to check if labs came back for a diabetic patient, you grip the edge of a counter, a wave of dizziness hitting you. bracing yourself, you tilt your head down and close your eyes, spots starting to form. after a few moments, the feeling subsides. you stand back up, lightheadedness still present, but not about to take you out.
âyou need to fucking lay down.â
surprised, you turn around to see cassie staring at you from the desk opposite of where youâre standing. she walks over to you, both worried and frustrated.
âwe get off in an hour. i can lay down then.â
ânot if you faint first.â
âiâm not gonna faint.â
âi just saw that,â cassie says, jestering to you and the spot where you held yourself up on the counter. âthatâs what happens when youâre about to pass out. you look so pale too, baby.â
you open your mouth to protest, but you know your girlfriend is right. youâre too exhausted to argue anyways. with a sigh of resignation, you cross your arms and look at cassie, your gaze warm and open now.
âcâmon,â cassie softly tells you as she wraps an arm around your shoulder. âthereâs a room open in central 10. iâll let dana know youâre using it.â
âwhat if a patient needs it?â
âyou are literally on the verge of fainting, i think you qualify as in need of a room.â
cassie opens the door, dimming the lights for you. she then guides you to the bed and helps you lay down. you close your eyes, the last 24 hours hitting you hard. you feel a hand on your forehead, cassie brushing some hair out of your face, her touch gentle and featherlight.
âmkay,â she murmurs. âiâll be back with your water bottle.â cassie then lets out a small chuckle and shakes her head. âiâm going to have to buy you one of those time marker water bottles.â
âyou better not,â you tell her, opening your eyes just to glare at her.
âyour birthdayâs coming up,â she teases.
âi swear to god cassie, if you buy me one of those stupid time marker water bottlesâŠâ
âdonât worry,â cassie says, a smile hanging on her face. âiâll buy you other stuff too.â
you roll your eyes which makes cassie laugh. she then leans forward, pressing a tender kiss to the top of your head. when she pulls back a soft smile is on her face.
âthanks,â you murmur.
âfor?â cassie taunts.
with a chuckle thatâs more like a scoff, you close your eyes again. âcaring,â you mutter under your breath.
cassie leans forward and gives your nose an affectionate peck. then she kisses your lips, rubbing your arm before retreating.
âiâll be back in a minute, baby. with water.â
Twelve: Jack
alright 4 chapters tonight and now its 2am so I need to sleep
Jack left your apartment later than he meant to.
That was the first mistake.
The second was the silence on the drive back.
Not the peaceful kind.
The kind that gives your thoughts too much room to breathe.
By the time he pulled into his place, he didnât even turn the engine off right away.
He just sat there.
Hands still on the wheel.
Staring at nothing.
Because ânothingâ was easier than what his brain kept trying to do.
Ten Point Five: The Morning After
No social media aspect in this chapter just wanted to write this...
Morning came to the ED the way it always did, too bright, too loud, and completely indifferent to the âpeaceâ of the night shift.
The shift settled into that familiar end-of-night haze. Charts were wrapped up, monitors reset, and conversations that had been all business for twelve hours softened into tired murmurs. The kind of exhaustion that settled deep in your bones and didn't fully leave until you were home.
You were finishing your last note at the nurses' station when Jack appeared beside you.
No announcement.
No hesitation.
"Ready?" he asked.
You leaned back in your chair.
"Define ready."
A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
"Ready to leave."
That one was easy.
"Yeah." You logged off the computer and pushed your chair in. "I'm ready."
The two of you crossed the department together without thinking about it. It was becoming a problem how naturally you fell into step with each other. How neither of you ever seemed to reach for the same supply at the same time anymore because you already knew what the other was grabbing. How the space between you had quietly disappeared.

Sleepy tantrums
Pairing: Dr. Jack Abbot x mom!wife!reader x toddler!daughter Warnings:: toddler tantrums, violent outbursts, emotional burnout, angst to comfort, crying, guilt, feelings of inadequacy. Summary: Toddlerhood is hard, but dealing with an overtired three years old who weapons grade fights sleep is a whole different level of exhausting.
Disclaimer: This story is pure fiction and written solely for entertainment purposes.
The living room floor was a minefield of plastic building blocks, and at the center of the chaos stood your three years old daughter, Maya.
Her face was flushed beetroot red, tears mixing with sweat as she let out another piercing shriek.
She was exhausted. You knew it, and deep down, she knew it, but she was fighting sleep with everything her tiny body had.
"No bedtime! Bad mommy!" she screamed, her voice cracking. Before you could even blink, a plastic toy truck came flying through the air, clipping your shoulder. " I hate you!"
㠀㠀㠀㠀㠀㠀 BABY, BABY!
summary: jack abbot is a big fan of calling people pet names. it drives you nuts. pairing: jack abbot x resident!reader tags: afab reader, pet names [sweetheart, best girl], jack abbot being a cocky flirt, r has a huge crush on him word count: 0.9k notes: for all of those that were victims of workplace crushes <3
Doctors are not nice. Never have been, never will be. Even your professors in medical school had been made of stone, steel-faced and stubborn, refusing to let even a slight slipup happen without any consequence. It was excusable, the behavior of doctors, due to what they saw everyday and what they held in their hands. You have felt yourself becoming thicker-skinned as youâve spent your years inside of the emergency department, an unmovable object in the unfair windstorm of life.
But Jack Abbot is not mean. He is not unfair or harsh. He is empathetic and gentle despite the consistent pressure always put on his shoulders. Itâs jarring, compared to all of your other mentors. Dr. Robby, who will scold you until his face turns red beneath that beard and scruff, or the residents that have inherited their attitudes from him.
Itâs only human nature, the fact that you find yourself so drawn to Abbot. Beneath the cool demeanor you keep, youâre just a being of nerves and flesh and blood and synapses, all willing to work on their own without your help. The drastic difference between how others treated those beneath them and Abbot was enough to get your stomach churning and heart racing, as much as you passed it off as a stupid workplace crush.
The worst part was that he couldnât keep his nicknames to himself.
"but I haven't shaved" I don't think I remember asking if you shaved I think I remember telling you to take those panties off and spreading those pretty legs so I can makes you feel good
they deserve so much and they steal the show for me
my last three brain cells trying to get me through the day
