12 Miles refers to the shortest distance between Northern Ireland, where I’m from, and Scotland, where I now live. While ostensibly part of the same country and with very similar landscapes and geology, I was surprised by how differently I feel towards my new environment. Identity and history can be a confusing issue in Northern Ireland but I know that I am from the few square miles of land where I grew up in a completely uncomplicated way and have always taken this connection to the landscape for granted. I began to investigate the differences between where I’m from and where I am now using the process of aimless walking, photographing whatever I was drawn to and noticing connections when reviewing the images. To try and understand where the differences come from, I also documented my journeys between the two places, traces left on my body by my trips, and objects I collected while walking. Ultimately the project is an attempt to photograph intangible feelings of connection to a physical place, with an awareness of the inherent impossibility of the task.
