Sorry, what?
Sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you! I guess it is a little scary, if you think of it that way. But it’s written in a way that doesn’t spook me at all.
Sounds like it'd be a really good book. Like it'd make you think whether you wanted to or not?
Sorry, what?
It’s not really scary. A little suspenseful at times, but not scary. Yes, they do! They sort of alter people’s personalities to make them do whatever the monarchy wants them to do. They also can alert the rulers if anyone is planning any sort of rebellion.
...just as a concept that's really scary... at least to me it is.
Sorry, what?
That’s me! Oh, it’s about this made up land where everyone is forced to wear a magical mask. It’s fascinating.
It sounds sort-of scary. Do the masks do anything?

I know who you are, Henry. You’re the Headmistress’s son.
You like books, don’t you?
Y...yes. That's me...
...I like stories. There's a bit of a difference.
Found a bench I like inside.
I agree. It’s nice and quiet here, isn’t it? I wonder why no one else comes here.
I’m Peter. Peter Pan.
Probably because it doesn't actually lead anywhere but to that locked door and that window. It's just a...meaningless side hall with a bench. But it's a pretty nice bench.
I'm Henry. Pleased to meet you.
Sorry, what?
Oh, this? It’s Masks by E.C. Blake. I’m only about halfway through it but I really like it so far.
You’re Henry, right?
Yeah. And you're Wendy, right?
I haven't read that book before. What's it about.
Nah. What happens in the real world is what truly defines a person. Anyone can sit in a desk and pass a test, but only a few people can truly become “hero.” As people like to call them.
Oh that's true... but in a school it's things like the halls...and the dorms... that's where the adventures happen!

You like this area, too?
Oh! Um. Yeah. Yeah it's..nice. I can see where people are walking by but no one...comes...down...here.
Hi.
It's getting too cold for my usual homework spot...
I’m not going to stop you. I have a bunch of posters and maps on my walls.
Hummm...what could I put up in my room to make it more interesting?
Sorry, what?
Could you repeat that? I didn’t quite hear you.
Oh! I just asked what you're reading. That's all.
Yes… And no. I believe it is actually better to become a better person outside these walls. Education doesn’t define you as a person, but yes, no one should tell someone how to be better.
You don't think school is the best way to become a better person?
Tick Tick Tick
Yes… I suppose you are right. Has anyone told you that you are bright for your age?
Yeah...I've heard that.
That is an excellent mindset to have.. Or at least it is in my opinion. Everyone should strive to be better than what they already are.
Isn't that what we're all at school for in the first place? To become better then what we are?
Except everyone should get to define "better" on their own. No one should tell them what that is.
Tick Tick Tick
I could not agree with you more, Henry. After all, history is just stories of our past which happen to be true. Perhaps I can fit more storytelling into class.
Everyone has their own story, and then the stories weave together to make history, right?
I suppose I have a fondness for the night. I find it much more peaceful… Quiet.
So… Do you run the house then?
I guess nighttime can be sort-of nice...
I really don't but maybe I will someday?

Cold weather won't stop me! All my homework will be done in peace and comfort over here.
