Gender in Social Media
There is a definite reputation and expectation that comes with each gender on social media platforms. Too often we fall victim to stereotypes or following the trend that goes viral on any social media platform. Often there are age groups, genders, and social statuses that are quick to become associated with whatever is trending or deemed relevant. I’ve noticed women trying harder to conceal imperfections within their posts and create false representations of themselves through highly edited and filtered selfies. Then in comparison, men are more likely to post a blurred photo from the night prior and spend less than 30 seconds to think of a caption before hitting the upload button. Why do women care so much about what they are putting online and how others will receive that information? Why do men often not flinch at the thought of what people will think of them? Is this influenced by online harassment and trolling, factors we know exist and are possible but remain foreign to some people? It opens a lot of doors to questioning why the male online appearance can be different from a woman’s. #GenderRoles #MCO435
