Photo #1: What you see here are some beads I just bought at my local bead store. My customer requested I make him a turquoise anklet (and possibly a bracelet). I would be happy to work with real turquoise but I neglected to discuss cost with the buyer and I don't imagine he wants a $50 ankle bracelet. These wavy magnesite beads are a beautiful natural stone dyed cyan to resemble turquoise. Photo #2: I went out on a limb when I selected these beads since I haven't discussed size and shape in much detail with my customer, yet. We are in agreement that I will have him try something on first and work from there. The man I had in mind while selecting these beads is very tall, not too slender, with gorgeous light azure eyes. I wanted small silver-tone accents, and I hope I picked the right spacer beads (base metal), but it's okay if I didn't since this is a rough draft. In fact, after I talk to the buyer I will likely replace these beads with something similar in sterling silver. There are a million and one uses for these beads. Photo #3: I really should have taken a measurement, but I guess that no less than 13" is right for this gentleman. Here I am stringing beads on stretchy string, but the final version will be strung on nylon coated wire. I like barrel clasps for anklets, but I will find out my customer's preference when he tries on the anklet. Photo #4: The customer, Gene, is an avid music-lover #thebritishbreakfast of the 60s generation, so I used a cassette tape for scale because I knew he would be able to relate well to that. (-; The circumference is 13 inches. Photos #s 5 & 6: It's not done yet! Far from it in fact. The questions remain: Is this the look Mr Pembleton had in mind? How does it fit? Can he work a barrel or lobster claw clasp? Is he still interested in a bracelet? With ankle bracelets, I think durability and comfort are more important than looks. When stringing an anklet, I will use imperfect beads that I would not use for a necklace or a bracelet. Thus, I made this customer's anklet before the bracelet because I want the wrist piece to be even more delightful. Having this piece in hand will provide a solid point of departure for discussing size, shape and style of the bracelet. Hell, maybe I can even talk him into getting real turquoise. Compared to dyed magnesite, real turquoise is less even in color -- more organic, like the Earth it has hues that span the blue-green spectrum as well as interesting sand-like inclusions. But though dyed, magnesite is a respectable gem (semi-precious) in its own right.
