this was… in it’s own way.. a hard fic to read (which makes it the best fic to read! pain! i love it! help me!) it’s very very very beautifully written and i hold it very close to my heart….how it portrays jack by himself and how hard it must’ve been…it also manages to weave in how mental illness plays its own role, even once you get together with the person you’re pretty sure is it for you. somewhat painful but cathartic and achingly tender.

considering how popular this fic is it actually sat open in a tab for a looong loooooong time just bc…well… it’s 285,748 words. im an all or nothing girl as in i once read the entire maze runner trilogy in one night so i had to find the right time

first of all: angst. second of all: angst. third of all: ….. u guessed it… angst. BUT don’t worry, for every drop of angst there’s a metro-fucking-ton of smut and sweetness :)))) ;))) what this fic does brilliantly is create an OMC that is at the forefront of the story and do it seamlessly. this is a pretty iconic fic and tbh im definitely not one for fics longer than 100k but this was a fuckin’ beaut man

Imagine Person A of your OTP is pregnant and hasn’t yet told Person B. One day, A and B are doing something together, when B suddenly says “I know about the baby”. You choose what happens next.

Rowan had been having another bad day. It had been a series of bad days in a series of bad weeks. All day during her day at the hospital she had just wanted to go home and watch a movie. Her job sucked.

“Hey Des?”

“Yeah Rowan?”

“Want to pick up Chinese food on your way home?”

“Only because I love you.”

“Love you too.”

She arrived home at six, showered and got into his old soccer shirt and loose, loose sweatpants. Everything was really tight since she had found out that she was pregnant. Of course, that had been four weeks ago. She hadn’t told Des yet, besides the constant pestering from Maddie.

Des should’ve been the first to know, but his career was just taking off. He was a big shot environmental lawyer, and he had just gotten one of the biggest cases of his career. She was a neurologist, and was specializing memory loss. They had finally bought a bigger house in Concord, a blue colonial with a striking resemblance of Salem house.

“It’s for when we have kids Rowan,” Des had reasoned when they decided to buy it. “Not like that’s going to happen anytime soon.” They both had a good laugh about that, but that was six months before Rowan had found out that she was pregnant.

She curled on the couch and turned on Netflix, searching for a Disney musical. She loved those things.

The front door cracked open as Des burst through the door.

“Hey baby,” She looked around to see him standing in their living room behind the couch she was lying on, holding a bag of Chinese take out. His sleeves were rolled up around his elbows, his hair ruffled. She couldn’t wait to hear about that.

“Hey,” She stood up kissing him and grabbing the bag of food out of his hand and heading towards the kitchen. She grabbed all that she wanted and placed it into a bowl. She then returned to the couch to continue watching Pocahontas.

Des came in wearing a Harvard University sweatshirt and pajama pants. He sat there watching with her. She leaned on his chest. This was what he was for after all.

“I know about the baby.”

That certainly caught her attention.

“What?”

“I know that you’re pregnant.”

“How?”

“I’m not unobservant Rowan. I saw you vomiting occasionally in the morning and I noticed the little belly. I noticed you were more tired. And I noticed you were hiding something from me. It wasn’t that hard to tell. Why didn’t you tell me? You know that this is what I’ve always wanted.”

She rested her hand on the tiny bump.

“You were so busy with your case. I didn’t know how you would react. I wasn’t sure how I felt about it.”

He kissed her, leaning over and rubbing a hand on her bump.

“I love you. You can always tell me anything.”

“I love you too.”

He had been gone for what felt like eternity. Her hand had felt empty without his; the woods had lost their familiar feeling. The campus was empty without him by her side. Her Friday nights had been spent in her room reading, her Saturdays alone doing homework and practicing. He had been the one to drag her out of her shell, introduce her to new friends, plus he always brightened up her day.

She was walking to her first class, alone, one dark, snowy, cold morning, sniffling and muttering about how cold she was. She walked past the barren tree, wondering if he was ever going to return.

She doubted it.

Her hands were freezing as she reached into her back pocket to silence the buzzing phone.

“Hello?”

“Rowan?”

“Des?”

“Rowan.” She could hear his smile through the phone. It really hadn’t been the same without him recently. Sure there were still Maddie and Cal and everyone from Salem house, but she just wanted him.

“I miss you Des.”

“I miss you too Rowan,” She supposed the cat she found in a basket on her doorstep confirmed that, “but I’ll see you soon.”

“How soon?”

That was when she spotted him, across the courtyard. Immediately, she dropped everything she was holding and sprinted across the forum. He smiled and rushed towards her too.

She jumped into his arms and buried her face in his chest. She look up at him to see a couple tears in his eyes, which was basically nothing compared to the gallons streaming down her face. His head was half shaved, his breath minty. He looked polished, his face clean shaven and his uniform perfectly pressed. She supposed that this was the façade that he wore on the campaign trail, perfect Desmond James Rivers.

But she didn’t love that boy. She loved Des Rivers, soccer star, king of the trombone who would wear a week old t-shirt and smile even when he was sad. She loved the boy who would do anything for the people he loved.

“Rowan…”

“Des…” She just couldn’t stop crying, no matter what he did.

He kissed her then and everything felt just like it should be.

“I love you, Rowan Emilia Thomas.”

“I love you, Desmond James Rivers.”

And everything made sense again.

She had her little things though. She’d had this boyfriend for years, a boy named Danny, and even when she became famous she couldn’t let him go. I admired her for that, I think. I always just resented the fact that my parents never brought me with them, that I was passed from relative to relative living my days like a normal girl.

And even though I hadn’t been the real Rowan in New York or Boston, something about Madrigal Carson and Desmond Rivers and all of my new friends, I was becoming the real Rowan Emilia Thomas”
