Also, it was not the apple falling from a tree that made Issac Newton “discover” gravity. He was reading the books of Ibn Al Haytham, an Arab Muslim from Iraq, who pioneered the scientific method, discovered gravity and wrote about the laws governing the movement of bodies (now known as Newtons three laws of motion) some 600 years before Newton existed. Without him, modern science as we know it wouldn’t exist. Read on him. His achievements are far greater than what I’ve just mentioned here.

In the middle ages, THE place to go for an education was the middle East, or, failing that, Spain. The Muslim world didn’t have the same limits placed on scientific inquiry that the Christian world did, and since they were willing to look at more than just Aristotole and actually compare texts to the observable world, they had some incredible scientific and mathematical advancements. And street lights and toilets. I mean theories and algebra are great and all, but street lights and toilets. In the 12th century. Also medical advancements, and fewer rules against women studying. Hell, women *should* be the ones studying the female body, would you rather a woman see your female relatives, or some old man? Would you rather have someone who lives in the same kind of body, or one who has no first hand idea what the parts can do?

Europeans erased centuries of knowledge from the East because of fear. When we “rediscovered” it, we were still too egotistical to admit that non-whites could have been smarter, so we invented our own mythology.

Europe’s Dark Ages coincide with what’s called the Golden Age of Islam. Culture, technology, and science were not just rich in the Islamic empires, they were astonishingly rich. Europe’s Renaissance barely holds a candle. And a large part of it was how readily and enthusiastically ideas and information were transmitted throughout their broad and culturally diverse area of influence. People with interests in science, medicine, philosophy, literature, etc. were encouraged to pursue them and scholars were funded generously by the state, (the most highly esteemed had salaries estimated to be similar to those of today’s professional atheles) and as a result there were so many brilliant polymaths from this era that if someone refers to “The Father of [area of pretty much any STEM field]” your response should be “which one?”

The Muslim world is also about the biggest reason Europe had a Renaissance. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Church actively discouraged reading non-approved ancient writings, so they had no reason to curate the collections of writings the Greek, Hellenistic, and Roman worlds left behind. You know who did? Muslim scholars. They bought, like, ALL of them, and put them in huge libraries and started translating and discussing and expanding on the works, and they continued to do so for over a thousand years. So when the Europeans were ready to “rediscover” the Greeks and Romans, they could simply turn to the Abbasid Empire. (What, you figure pulling some statues out of the ground was more helpful to the Renaissance than reading literally everything the Greek philosophers and Roman historians had written about, in a language you spoke, with annotations?) The Muslim world not only was a culturally and scientifically rich and innovative intellectual powerhouse, it’s also the only reason Europe was able to rediscover its own historical culture.

Also, it had been influencing European culture for centuries before the Renaissance. For instance, the European idea of “courtly love” that would shape the culture of high chivalry as well as feature prominently in literature for the next few hundred years, emerged from a combination of themes that were popular in Muslim love poetry at the time. Crusaders heard these poems in the areas they invaded, and brought the concepts back on their return. (This is achingly romantic stuff we’re talking, friends: love is something that inherently makes you a better, more noble person; it’s never wrong to love someone, even someone unattainable; to love for love’s sake is good…) So, Muslim culture is responsible for the entire body of Arthurian literature.
