Does this feeling have a name?
A sense that life could have been so different
Yet so the same
If you had moved to New York after graduation
If you had picked a different college
If you had been to private school for longer
If your mother or father had been from somewhere else
Would life be Montauk summers in a shared beach home?
A large pool of hard seltzers and a larger pool of water
Sunsets over the large home
Skiing in Vermont every winter?
An outdoor pool that leads indoors
Sunsets over each slope
If I hadn’t met you all those years ago
Or would life be just the same?
The slight differences in what made two very different lives
Does this feeling have a name?
I thought this was it. This is where I felt safe.
I associated seven years with freedom
I read once that was how long it took for all of your skin to regenerate
Six to go
Five to go
Four to go
Three to go
He wouldn’t have touched my skin
And I kept thinking
If I could lose five more pounds
Would I feel different?
But I think I know; I wanted one person’s touch to be the only one on my skin
All of my skin
Your touch
And where are you?
